What to do in Nuuk

Food in Nuuk

Dog sledding

Happens in Qeqertarsuaq, Ilulissat, Aasiaat, Sisimiut, Uummannaq, Upernavik, Qaanaaq. Depending on winter and snow coverage.

Snowmobiling

Sisimiut and Ilulissat have rentals. Nuuk does not because of the terrain being diffucult for new beginners and Insurance pricing being to high.

Skiing / Snowboarding

Nuuk, Sisimiut,Maniitsoq,Qeqertarsuaq

Cross country skiing : Most places when there is enough snow coverage.

Whales in Greenland

Best bet is Ilulissat from May until September. Whales show up all over Greenland.

Government website for the only remaining “grandfathered” Exploration and Exploitation Licenses for oil after the 2021 moratorium

If anyone is following this closely about Greenland’s future and the companies attempting to drill holes into it, here are the actual licenses.

The website just went live in the last couple days after the licenses were unavailable for quite some time.

What’s even more interesting is the story of how they came about from the executive of the entity that is the licensee now. A YouTube interview posted on r/GLND

Question Do you consider 'Greenland' as Nordic?

I know many people have asked this question but now the geopolitical climate has changed, and the last post I've seen asking this question was 2 years ago.

Greenland made its flag distinct because of wanting to be culturally seperated from the Nordics. How about now? especially after Trump's inauguration into presidency and the threats he are making?

Maybe not much has changed, but I am still curious to hear.

Camping gas in Nuuk

Hello, I’m flying into Nuuk on the 28th at 7:00 pm and taking the ferry to Kapisillit at 9:00 am the next day, while in Nuuk I’m going to need to buy about 3 camping gas canisters and maybe a jar of peanut butter, as I’m getting there after the outdoor stores all seem to close and leaving before they open, I’m kinda worried that I won’t be able to get gas by the time my boat leaves. For context I’m just looking for a standard camping gas canister to fit onto a jetboil. Would anyone in Nuuk buy 3 and I could buy them from you? I would pay more than double what they cost you if you could meet me near the dock.

Thank you so so much!

Society Warmth in Greenland

I was born and raised in South Greenland.
And this year i really do feel that this summer is often unbearably warm. Even in rainy weather, opening the window doesn’t make the room any cooler. It’s comparable to a regular day in Denmark, and for us Kalaallit it’s not normal at all.
It’s nice to get to this kind of weather on vacation to europe, but it is worrying for me if this becomes the norm in Greenland. Just last year, it used to cool down as soon the sun sets. But now i suit up to go out, and be surprised that it’s warm.
I remember growing up, that in rare times, there would be the rare hot weather, sweating because of the sun shining, but now it’s regardless if there’s sun shine, i still sweat.
What’s also new to me is seeing mirages in water while sailing. I was so weirded out by seeing the water and the mountains warping. I thought they were strong winds, because that’s what they looked like.
For years, i’ve been feeling that the weather during summer has gotten very unbalanced. At the beginning, there’d be a couple of days of rain, and for about two months after that, there’d be drought. This year, it took about two and a half months for the land to become green. That resulted in two wildfires in two different parts of greenland.
I remember sailing far south to Qaqortoq, seeing a gigantic ball of smoke. I initially thought that it was fog, but i realized that it had a different color.

I hope that this will be an unusual one time occurrence, but that’s a wishful thinking.
I hope that the fresh air that i breathe will feel like actual fresh air again.

Has anyone tried Sermitsiaq's AI translator (Nutserisoq)?

What do you think of the quality?

Sermitsiaq launched their AI translator (Nutserisoq) for subscribers a while back — trained on their own bilingual article archive. I'm curious what people's experience with it is, especially native Kalaallisut speakers.

How good are the da→kl translations really? Natural, or "Danish with Greenlandic words"?

How does it compare to Nutserut (Oqaasileriffik) or Google/GPT for you?

Do you use it for anything real, or just tried it once?

Interested in honest opinions, good or bad.

Mailing postcards from Nuuk to Europe

Hi, i don't know where to turn to because internet is not giving me a straight answer and I have a couple questions. I'm going to Greenland with some friends- we'll have limited time to explore Nuuk and so our layover will be during Saturday and Sunday in weird hours that post office is not opened anyway.

  1. Is there a way to buy stamps (I saw that airport sells postcards and I think I can buy them in stores so it won't be a problem) at the airport or in any of the shops at the Nuuk Center?

  2. What's the cost of mailing a postcard/letter to Europe (just aprox. cost of the stamps and mailing service or tax if there is one and if anyone knows).

  3. Is Nuuk airport closed at night? As I said we will be at Nuuk in the evening and will fly out at noon the next day during the weekend. We have our camping gear so at least we can sleep it of somewhere on the outskirts of the city but airport will be warmer and have a bathroom (after a week in the wild I would love to have a bathroom close). We just can't afford the accommodation in the city so these are our only options.

Thank you so much for any answers! We are departing soon and I can't wait to see Greenland <3

Help my Dad watch the WC Semi Final!

My (English) dad is currently on a cruise in Greenland, has a good WiFi connection and is desperate to watch the match. I don't think I could talk him through installing a VPN in the next 20 minutes.

Can anyone think of a fairly rapid solution? Tak!

Question Why didn't The United Kingdom ever colonize Greenland and Iceland given their proximity to them?

Discussion Why didn't Denmark incorporate Greenland and Iceland into one single territory which equally shared resources with each other?

Back when Denmark first colonized Greenland and Iceland why didn't it lump them both together into one northern territory with a governor for each and having them both equally share money and resources and trade?

That would have caused Greenland and Iceland to be one single nation today sharing resources, they might rely on the Iceland side for military protection and revenue, also Greenland with Iceland included would be a lot more wealthy and might have more towns on the western side, it might be a lot better off today like a Dane United Kingdom of Denmark, Iceland and Greenland.

🇬🇧

Far out in the sea ice off East Greenland, a massive iceberg is currently drifting south—with over 1,200 kilometers already behind it.

The iceberg was "born" when it broke off the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden Glacier (79-Fjorden) during the winter of 2023/24. Until this past winter, it remained stationary near the island of Île de France, trapped in the fast ice. When the fast ice broke up, the iceberg set in motion and has since drifted southward along the coast with the pack ice.

Over the coming week, the iceberg is expected to break free from the pack ice and continue drifting toward Tasiilaq. Given the right wind and current conditions, it could continue all the way around Cape Farewell.

The iceberg measures approximately 5.7 by 4 kilometers and rises 10–30 meters above sea level—which is only the tip of the iceberg, as the vast majority of the ice is hidden beneath the water.

The satellite images below show a close-up of the iceberg (Sentinel-2) and its broader context off the coast of East Greenland, captured by NASA's MODIS satellite on July 6, 2026.

The town called Ittoqqortoormiit in Northeast Greenland is in the news. This is what it looks like [OC]

It is pristine. It is sacred. It’s where I have spent the most time in Greenland over the past decade. Hope this gives you some context.

This is the only town in Northeast Greenland because the rest of the region is the national park. It sits at the edge of the largest fjord system on earth. Kangertittivaq (Scoresbysund). The population is 328 and it is very much a subsistence hunting community.

I was in an uncertain place in my life just after Covid and like the folks in Qaanaaq in the extreme northwest of Greenland, they took me in and I have never been the same since that trip. I have spent 10 weeks there and counting over two trips.

It has my heart. ♥️

Question Why is Greenland against looking for mineral resources and checking to see if anything is underneath the ice that has value?

I why Greenland is against Trump because he is a POS and we hate him too just to clarify that, but why are the people there against scientists and other people checking for precious mineral resources and other things of value that could be buried underneath of the ice sheets for thousands of years like diamonds, gold, iron, coal maybe gasoline and other things which will make it very wealthy and prosperous if it was mined safely and given jobs to the people there instead of just refusing out of belligerence only because Trump is being a moron first?

Why not inspect areas for resources and wealth and bring jobs and mineral wealth to the island? Why can't it be done safely without any problems or complaints?
