Mission 1 and focus discussion…

So, I’ve been pretty aggressive with the focusing issues that have been getting discussed regarding the mission 1 pro. Here’s the thing: I do see a slight focus issue at further distances. Depending on the size of the objects, that can be anywhere from a few meters to 10m before the focus issue really seems noticeable. Of course, it’s already in my head that there is a fixed focus distance…

I’d really love if there’s anyone willing to give me some raw mission 1 pro footage to take a closer look at. I ordered one but it won’t be here for about two weeks.

I’m really beginning to wonder just how much of an issue this infinity focus “problem” really is. I’m also beginning to wonder if some of it is exasperated via camera settings.

I recently saw some footage that the sharpness was set to high and denoise set to low. The result? I didn’t see objects in the background blurred / out of focus at all. They were sharp as a tack. Yes - slightly over-sharpened to some extent, but crystal clear.

Then there is the motion blur setting… it’s possible a lot of the footage being seen is using this as I believe it’s on by default.

We all have it in our heads that the gopro mission 1 pro is such a major boost over the past hero line, and we see slight blur or focus “issues”- and perhaps that gets amplified?

There’s no doubt that the focus distance isn’t actually infinity as it was in the previous generations. That’s crystal clear based solely on the specs - the fixed aperture and the sensor size alone make that a dead obvious give away. Putting a macro lens on the camera is going to further exasperate that and make it even more obvious. But let’s be honest - was the focus depth ever truly “infinity” on ANY of their cams?

There comes a point that objects in the background are simply too far away to pull any detail from. With a higher quality footage, that lack of detail is going to be even more obvious. With so many settings configured out of the box to give it a more “cinematic look,” sorta speak, how many of these videos that we are seeing are literally just using out of the box settings? To me, that’d be like taking out your brand new Sony Alpha A1 or Canon R6 and just snapping photos in Auto mode (which really does look like crap).

I don’t want to hate the camera, but the reviews and the content I’ve seen in them - seriously, so much of the footage looks absolutely crap. Then I run across some footage that just simply looks astounding at all depths in the frame.

What’s the deal?

does Mission 1 motion blur actually do anything ?

Has anyone noticed if changing this setting does anything ?

I thought if I changed from adaptive (or low/med/high) to max motion blur reduction then the camera should raise shutter speed (within my ISO range).

But from what I see from the onscreen readings, the shutter speed stays the same yet there's still plenty of ISO range to go.

I don't have any ND filters - does it need these for this setting to make a difference?

Clarification : I am asking if setting the motion blur to off (max blur reduction) will raise the SS, not how do I get lower SS.

I just lost my Gopro in an 80ft Lake.

Upvotes

I was water tubing with my GoPro hero 8 Black attached to my head with a headstrap. The water tube flipped upside down and when I got back up the headstrap was no longer on my head. I know most people would say buy a new gopro but it’s the footage I care the most about that I captured earlier and didn’t have time to save and also I did have the cloud subscription so the videos were only stored on the SD Card. The GoPro was in a clear waterproof case as well. I did take pictures of the location I was at where I lost the go pro do I do have an estimate for location but not exactly where it is and the lake may be deeper than 80ft.

TL:DR: I lost my GoPro in an 80ft lake with the headstrap and Clear waterproof case still on it but do have an estimate location for where it is.

Labs on Mission is now mostly feature matching HERO13, and starting to add a few extra features. The new DTMF detector might seems weird for most users, but it can serve as is very inexpensive multi-cam controller, or for very long range cable control, where USB or WiFi is impractical (Rocket launches, deep water ROVs, gaussian spat camera arrays, etc.)

Mission 1 wide angle lens?

Does anybody know if a wide angle lens kit is expected in the near future? I would really find it useful for mountain bike pov.

Thanks!
