AMA with Pablo Lema + Mission 1 Pro giveaway today, June 2 7AM-2PM EDT!

Hey r/GoPro, we're excited to be hosting another AMA event, this time with Pablo Lema (aka u/GoPro-Pablo) , GoPro's SVP of Product!

About Pablo

Pablo is a long-time GoPro user, a regular participant here on r/GoPro, and has worked with GoPro since 2014! He has been an integral part in planning and coordinating new GoPro products, especially in the last decade, and most recently as GoPro’s head of all hardware and software Product. He's joined us the last 5+ years now for community AMAs (here are a few), so thanks for coming back again, Pablo!

While our recent AMA with Abe Kislevitz was a great opportunity to ask about tips and tricks around content with Mission 1, this AMA with Pablo is a great opportunity to ask about product development at GoPro, how GoPro designs for an entire ecosystem of interacting product, or other product design and function related questions. That said, this is an AMA and you're welcome to ask Pablo about anything - his favorite ski spots, his current FPV drone build, etc!

AMA Format & Timing

We won't go into too much explanation about how an AMA works- if you need to see what it looks like, check out Abe's recent AMA at the link above.

At the simplest level, this is your chance to ask Pablo anything, and get an inside-GoPro scoop on answers. While you can ask anything, just remember that Pablo won't be able to answer questions about in-development product, proprietary decisions or technology, or other privileged information. Consider framing any development related questions in a way that can be answered without breaking any confidentiality in the product development process!

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT TIMING- Pablo's availability this year is a little different due to work travel schedule, so this AMA will be live from 7AM-2PM Eastern time. This is a great opportunity for our eastern hemisphere redditors to interact, but if you're on the west side of the western hemisphere, we are going to open up this AMA Extra early at 9PM PST so that you can get a question into the thread without waking up early. Pablo won't be around to answer questions until the "official start time" of the AMA, so just get your questions in right away, and come back around for your answer later!

MISSION 1 GIVEAWAY!

Another one! GoPro decided to hook us up with not one but TWO giveaways with the AMA events this year, so we've got another set of prizes up for participants in the thread, again!

  • Anyone that participates in this AMA will have a chance to win a MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, awarded to Pablo's favorite question.
  • We'll also give away THREE 5-year GoPro Premium+ Subscriptions to some runner-up great questions!

Rules:

  1. You need to participate in today's AMA with a commented question for Pablo!
  2. Your account needs to have existed before this AMA was posted, and you need to have reasonable authentic activity on it. We reserve the right to disqualify accounts with no karma or post/comment history.
  3. We need to be able to get the prize to you. GoPro can ship direct to you, but you'll still need to message them your shipping info for the MISSION 1 PRO prize, or email address for the GoPro Premium+ Subscription. If you live in a country that GoPro can't ship to, or has excessive duty fees, etc, we'll see what alternatives there are, but in general, if you can buy from GoPro.com, you're probably OK.

That's it! If you have questions about the giveaway, please send a modmail rather than posting here.

AMA with Abe Kislevitz + Mission 1 Pro giveaway today! 10AM-6PM PST

Hey r/GoPro, we're excited to have Abe Kislevitz (u/abekislevitz), Product and Brand Fellow at GoPro, with us today for an Ask-Me-Anything about all things GoPro, using MISSION 1 cameras, or anything else you can think to ask!

About Abe Kislevitz

For some of the younger and more recent members of the GoPro community, Abe is a long-time community member, and even longer-time GoPro creator-turned-employee.

He's led a substantial amount of creative efforts at GoPro over 15+ years, and his influence now spans influencing marketing strategy to helping define product design and engineering decisions. Probably one of the most knowledgeable sources of GoPro information out there, he knows the history of GoPro as a company, best practices for filming the best possible shot, advanced techniques and hacks, and everything in-between.

He has a great YouTube channel full of tips and tricks, and his insta feed is worthy of a follow.

He's an incredible resource and a helpful community member that has kept us closely connected with GoPro's product designs, including advocating for our pain points and working to have our voices heard and represented in new products.

We are thankful to have him here in the community, and happy to have him with us today for the AMA! Thanks Abe!

AMA Format

If you've not done an AMA event before, it's pretty simple - You can ask Abe anything. While it is entirely up to you what questions you ask, Abe has an "inside perspective" on the product GoPro develops, and likely has more time hands-on with MISSION 1 cameras than anyone else right now. Considering that today is a big day for everyone that pre-ordered, we highly encourage you to get those burning MISSION 1 questions answered, or collect tips and tricks to use in the coming year!

As a reminder, while you can ask anything, Abe can't talk about unreleased product plans or proprietary information and won't be able to answer those questions the way you want.

Abe will be around today from 10AM-6PM Pacific Time, and this thread will go live 2 hours before that so that you all can begin asking questions and Abe can drop in throughout the day to answer in the thread. We'll pin a comment once the official time for the AMA is done to let everyone know it's over, but we always allow conversations to continue beyond that if wanted.

MISSION 1 GIVEAWAY!

It's our r/GoPro tradition with camera launches to give away some product, and GoPro was more than happy to hook the community up again this year:

  • Anyone that participates in this AMA will have a chance to win a MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, awarded to Abe's favorite question.
  • We'll also give away THREE 5-year GoPro Premium+ Subscriptions!

Rules:

  1. You need to participate in today's AMA with a commented question for Abe!

Mission 1 Pro used with Magnetic Latch in top-down mount - is weight problem?

I have few weeks Mission 1 Pro. Used on backpacks straps (90% of usecases). Last week M1P fallen from Magnetic Latch in 40km/h speed on eScooter while I make jump over speed bump. I found, that I securing pin on latch was broken. So, I presume, that because of some vibrations during previous rides (I ride on 11" tires, footh paths, rocks and so) was that pin partially damaged, because camera still can moving in Magnetic Latch. Then, while I jump over that speed jump, camera make big move, broke finaly that pin and fallen from latch.

M1P is broken (display glass, body, quick capture rubber, optic cover frame, ...). Last video segment was damaged and not saved latest 15-30seconds. I recovered that video with untrunc tool, but that unsaved part is lost.

I'm not a Gopro subscriber, but I wrote to support and ... to by suprised, they will send me new camera (hope, that Magnetic Latch too).

But question is - isn't M1P too heavy for my usecase? Of course, I can mount camera with fingers, or 1/4" to fingers mount adapter, but I have more Magnetic Latch (other backpack, 2 tripods/sticks) and using other mounts than Magnetic Latch is not practical.

I'm in question, if Hero 13(14?) is not better for my usecase, or that 50g of weight not help and is better to use fingers, or 1/4" thread.

Here is video, how simple you can detach cam from Magnetic Latch, when securing pin is broken: https://youtu.be/0gpTd5seO3Y

Livestream Test with the GoPro Mission 1 Pro

Upvotes

It's 82 degrees out here in Portland (and pretty smokey, but it's all state wildfire). I decided to do a livestream test with the Mission 1 Pro.

This is in 1080P

Using the internal battery only (no external power sources)

Camera is mounted outside overlooking the Willamette River.

There is no wind outside, the camera is in direct sunlight, there's other cooling added (no fans, no heat sinks etc).

So far the picture looks good, there is background noise (there's a military ship docked nearby and it's generators are clearly audible as white noise).

Color me impressed, it's been streaming for over 2 hours now and it's still going! Will update post when the battery finally gives out.

Also bonus info. Got the new Enduro 2 battery charger. It's slightly taller than the standard charger (probably to allow for the quick charge function).

[THIS IS NOT A SALES POST: (Rule 9)] Just need opinions - How much should I list this package on eBay? Looking to offload one of my 13's to get an M1 Pro.

- GoPro 13

- 3 Batteries (OEM) and a Telesin Charging Case

- Ulanzi mini tripod grip

- Telesin titanium Cage

- Contacto Door (with short contacto cable)

Here's the research I've done. The 13 is 379 New. Mine is used, in great condition, has screen protectors. I would think 250 would be a fair price for it. 3 Batteries new is about 100 bucks. I think 75 since it includes a charging case is fair. The Ulanzi Grip, and Titanium cage were probably 40 total so I would add 20 to the package for that. And the contacto door is 35 bucks new. But I also have one of the short cables that come with it I don't really use often so I could throw that in and make it 40.

So all in it would be 385 for the package. Does that sound fair? Am I lowballing myself? am I out f my mind and it's too high? I don't sell stuff on eBay often if at all, let alone buy stuff on there.

Are there any good LUTs available for the Mission 1?

I use Phantom LUTs with my Sony A6700 — I shoot in Log, apply the LUT, and get a great-looking image with very little additional grading.

Is there anything similar available for the Mission 1? Are there any recommended LUT packs or conversion LUTs that work well with its Log profile?

Where can I find them, and what are you currently using in your workflow?

Hero 5 - Telesin batteries don't work???

[FIXED: I updated the camera firmware to 02.70 and the batteries are working now.]

I just bought 3 Telesin batteries (Hero8/7/6/5) for my old Hero 5 Black. The batteries charged in my GoPro charger. Everything seemed fine. When I put them in the camera... nothing. The camera acts as if there's no battery at all.

When I put my old, puffy, GoPro batteries in, the camera works. (Although the charge % is never above 85%. Crap old batteries.)

I bought the batteries from B&H. I'm going to contact them. But any advice is appreciated.

Do the mounts typically sellout a lot on GoPro’s website?

Just looking at mounts that I would like to get for my Hero 11 and a lot of them are sold out. Do they restock often? I missed placed my Gumby mount while on vacation. I did find a replacement but not on the website.

Thanks.

Lost my GoPro Hero 12 while snorkelling. How long will it still be recoverable?

I was using the head strap. It was there when I went in, gone when I came out. I retraced my route right away and the next day (today) but no luck. I was thinking I would return in about a week when the low tide will be 6 feet lower than it was when I lost and was trying to find it. I was swimming in water anywhere from 2 to 10 feet deep.

If I should find it, will it still be useable?

Mission 1 Pro RAW audio and Cloud Upload

If I set my M1P’s RAW Audio to 32-Bit Float and set cloud upload to auto clear, all related video/audio files are deleted as expected.
I can find no trace of the RAW Audio files in QUIK cloud.
Does anyone know how to access the RAW Audio files if auto clear is set?
Obviously auto clear can be left off, but kind of defeats the object of using cloud upload to save space and provide a backup.

Settings for Snorkeling

Going snorkeling in 2 weeks and just bought a GoPro 13. Does anyone have recommended settings?

Watched YouTube and set two additional profiles: 120fps and 240fps. What’s the best one to use when underwater?

If I take a slomo video with either of those, does it have to be viewed slomo or are you able to speed it up?

Also, I want to take pictures under water and when we’re not snorkeling but in water. Is it better to take a video and thanks pictures from it or take actual pictures? Thanks

960 fps Analysis: Sony RX10 IV vs. Huawei P40 Pro vs. GoPro Mission 1 Pro, with Suggestions for Improving GoPro's 480 & 960 fps Modes

I've had some experience shooting 960 fps on three different devices: the Sony RX10 IV, Huawei P40 Pro and now the GoPro Mission 1 Pro. Here's a quick rundown analysis on each.

Sony RX10 IV

The Sony RX10 IV's 960 fps mode suffers from the most severe aliasing and moiré of the three cameras and also applies a significant crop.

Pros:

  • End Trigger and Start Trigger recording modes
  • 2–4 seconds of recording in Quality Priority mode
  • Up to approximately 8 seconds in Shooting Time Priority mode
  • S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 color profiles
  • 1-inch sensor
  • Excellent close-focusing ability, making it well suited for macro work

Cons:

  • Heavy aliasing and moiré
  • Significant crop in high-speed modes
  • Limited to 8-bit recording

Huawei P40 Pro

The Huawei P40 Pro offers surprisingly good 960 fps image quality and detail for a smartphone released in 2020. However, recording time is limited to roughly 0.25s which is too short for my needs, but it includes a unique Motion Detection feature. I wish Huawei would have included an end trigger recording option since the recording time is very, very short.

A customizable detection box can be placed anywhere on the screen. When movement is detected inside that box, the phone automatically triggers slow-motion recording.

Image quality is maybe a hair bit sharper straight out of the camera than the GoPro's 960 fps mode. While some aliasing and moiré are present, they are far less noticeable than on Sony's high-speed modes and are comparable to the GoPro overall, maybe a bit prominent than the Mission 1 Pro.

Pros:

  • Good 1080P 960 fps footage out of the camera that's more detailed compared to the Mission 1 Pro's 960 fps
  • Can shoot 720P 1920 fps and 720P 7680 fps (interpolated)
  • Motion Detection with customizable detection zone
  • Minimal aliasing and moiré compared to Sony
  • 1/1.54-inch sensor with an 18mm f/1.8 lens
  • Excellent close-focusing distance for macro work

Cons:

  • Extremely short recording duration (0.25 seconds)
  • Interpolated 7680 fps did not look really good with very fast and erratic action
  • No pre-record buffer recording
  • No manual ISO or shutter speed controls (only exposure compensation can be adjusted and locked)

GoPro Mission 1 Pro

The GoPro records 960 fps using a 10-second burst mode. Unlike the Sony, it does not offer a pre-record buffer in the 960 mode.

The footage appears somewhat soft directly out of the camera, but aliasing and moiré are relatively minor and much less severe than Sony's 480 fps and 960 fps modes. It also avoids the aggressive crop found on the Sony.

Pros:

  • 10-second burst recording
  • Cleaner image than Sony's high-speed modes with minimial aliasing/moire
  • No aggressive crop
  • Multiple picture profiles, including Flat
  • 1-inch sensor

Cons:

  • A bit muddly looking 1080P 960
  • No pre-record capability or hindsight recording in the 960 mode
  • No GP-Log2 when shooting 960 fps (Flat profile only)
  • 8-bit recording only
  • Minimum focusing distance of approximately 24 inches

Overall Image Quality

Among the three cameras, the GoPro Mission 1 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro deliver the best overall 960 fps image quality in their respective categories. Both are a bit soft straight out of the camera but respond well to AI upscaling and sharpening in most scenes, producing a cleaner and more consistent final image than Sony's 480 fps and 960 fps modes. Sony's 480 fps and 960 fps modes are too compromised by line-skipping artifacts, which I found AI upscaling only exaggerates further.

From a usability standpoint, however, the GoPro and Sony have clear advantages over the Huawei due to their longer recording times, customizable picture profiles, and greater manual control.

AI Upscaling and Sharpening

For the best results, 480 fps and 960 fps footage benefits greatly from AI-based enhancement software such as Topaz Video AI, Aiarty, Davinci or something similar.

Although the footage can appear soft and muddy straight out of the camera, AI upscaling and sharpening can noticeably improve the image on most scenes while reducing or at least minimizing the appearance of aliasing and moiré. While these modes still are not ideal for broadcast or high-end commercial productions, they are more than capable of producing excellent results for YouTube, social media, and other online platforms.

Suggestions for Future GoPro Updates

I would love to see GoPro continue improving its high-speed modes through future firmware updates.

Some welcome additions would include:

  • A 2–4 second pre-record buffer in 960 fps Burst Slow Motion mode, perhaps by integrating Hindsight recording
  • GP-Log 2 support and 10-bit recording, even if it means reducing the maximum recording time to 5 seconds or 2–3 seconds as long as Hindsight Recording or some end trigger recording is implemented.
  • Higher recording bitrates
  • More detailed 1080P 480 and 960 fps
  • Improvements to the pixel-binning process to reduce the soft, mushy appearance of the footage straight out of camera
  • If the Mission 1 Pro gains the ability to record to an external SSD, could this pave the way for higher-quality 1080p 960 fps recording in RAW DNG or ProRes?

I'd also be interested in a 700 fps mode if it delivered noticeably higher image quality than the current 960 fps mode.

Looking Ahead

A Go Pro Mission Pro 2 capable of 4K at 480 fps or 2.5K at 960 fps feels like the next logical step. If GoPro continues improving image quality while expanding high-speed capabilities, it could set a new benchmark for compact slow-motion cameras.
