help me Why does my area 2d not move with my chracter2d?

Upvotes

I am trying to move a whole character2d using .position for example, $Bomb.position = Vector2(100, 50) and the Bomb object moves, along with the animated sprite, however the area2d and its collision2d stays in the spot the $Bomb object was, I was aware that it moves with the object but maybe i'm mistaken?

help me Controls inside containers ignore pivot ratio?

Upvotes

I'm following some tutorials and trying to add something extra as part of trying to do things and learning how to do it.

I have MarginContainer. Inside of it is HBoxContainer. And inside are TextureRects that I'm using to display lives. I'm trying to use Tween to scale down lost lives before removing them. But I want transform origin to be at the center.

The issue is:

  • Editor doesn't allow to set Transform -> Pivot Offset ratio because TextureRect is inside of container.
  • Enabling "Offset Transform" and setting ratio there does nothing.

What are my options?

as you can see it scales down with the origin point in top left corner instead of center-center

help me Connecting dialogue manager 3 to an active area

Upvotes

Just a quick disclaimer that I'm still very new to godot, my prior experience is in powershell

I've set up an active area using the Queble video "How to make interactable objects in Godot" which contains an interaction area and a player component that triggers the area (super great, highly recommended for other beginners), I've used that to create interactive animations like opening and closing curtains. I'd like to use that same framework to trigger the dialogue using the dialogue manager plugin but I can't figure out how to actually connect the dialogue to a scene.

Picture 3 is the trigger, not shown is the collision shape which I add based on the connected item/character (curtains being the in action example)

Interaction component 1
Interaction component 2
Interaction trigger
Interaction in action
Player scene

I've looked through the readme for dialogue manager 3 and I'm seeing everything but how to connect the dialogue (if someone finds it in there I'll 100% eat crow on that). I just know it's going to be something stupidly simple and I've probably zoomed too far into the issue to see the solution

selfpromo (games) Big day for me — after a few months of solo work, my game finally has a real trailer (Godot 4, C#)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Solo dev here, and today feels big — I finally got the game to trailer level after months of grinding. Wanted to share a couple of Godot bits I'm weirdly proud of.

It's a fake "Steam support terminal" where you approve or deny refund requests. The soft-retro look isn't a post shader — the whole 3D world renders into a low-res SubViewport (640×360) and gets scaled up, so you get that chunky, slightly-CRT feel for basically free while everything underneath stays real 3D. Cheap on performance, big on vibe.

The other piece I sank way too much time into: the request generator. Every refund case is built from independent pools — player name, game title, complaint text, conflict type — so it hits 8 billion+ unique combinations while each one still reads like a real (dumb) support ticket. You'll never see the same one twice.

AAA production on a case-of-beer budget. Art, sound, writing — all hand-made. Steam if you want to see more: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4972400/Refund_Speedrun/

Happy to answer anything Godot-side (SubViewport setup, the generator, whatever).

selfpromo (games) Working on my first game and looking for some feedback

I've been working on this space dodge game in Godot for a bit now. You fly around, dodge asteroids, shoot stuff, and pick up some collectibles. Pretty straightforward arcade loop. It is heavily inspired by Vampire Survivors, but I wanna implement some lore into it.

I use the VHS shader from godotshaders.com . I'm still not sure if it looks cool or just makes things harder to see.

Enemies so far are asteroids and some floating entities that shoot back at you. It needs more variety there, but keeping it simple for now.

Trying to figure out what to do with the different collectibles so they're not just points.

I've been having some random FPS drops too that I can't quite pin down. Probably something stupid I'm overlooking, or it is just a problem in the engine or my PC.

I am publishing this at such an early stage to get early feedback before extending so much. If you think that the game's idea is not very interesting, I may complete it and keep it simple to just be able to complete my first game at least.

selfpromo (games) After 6 years of development Viral Reload EX is out NOW on Switch and Steam!

I am so excited to be able to finally say that Viral Reload EX has been released! The plot is inspired by Fantastic Voyage and Innerspace, the gameplay is a mix of Galaga and modern shmup design, and it's got a killer soundtrack written by Floopy. Theres 9 levels, 9 bosses, 19 cutscenes, an Arcade Mode, Story Mode and Boss Rush Mode, some fun stuff to unlock in the Rec Room, tate support and a bunch of other settings to fiddle with. It took 6 years to make due partially to most of the team having serious health scares and near death experiences (ironic, I know), it's been a real passion project for all of us and we're also all ready to move on and work on something new and (hopefully) even better. I hope y'all enjoy the game!

Viral Reload EX is out now on the Nintendo Switch e-Shop and Steam for $9.99, and for the first week it's just $7.49, that's 25% off!

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2096020/Viral_Reload_EX/

Switch: https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/viral-reload-ex-switch/

selfpromo (games) Recreating RUST in Godot Engine — Introducing Project GDRust! (Devlog #1)

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, Nasway here!

I’ve recently started a new project called GDRust, where my goal is to recreate the core gameplay mechanics and world systems of Rust from scratch inside the Godot Engine.

For this first milestone, I completely focused on the user interface and successfully ported the iconic Rust inventory system into the engine. It features a pixel-perfect UI layout, fully functional slot logic, and reliable drag-and-drop item management just like in the original game.

🍿 Watch the full technical breakdown and devlog on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNK0evtfPhs

I will be posting regular updates, architecture reviews, and performance optimizations as the project develops. Make sure to check out the video, subscribe, and let me know your thoughts in the comments. Let's see how far we can push Godot! 🚀

help me Best way to Create Animations for Godot Fighting Game

2 Upvotes

I am trying to make a traditional style fighting game in godot, with 3D models. The animations themselves should feel similar and have the same smoothness as the attacks in dragon ball fighterz. Would animating within godot itself be the best way to do so, or would it be better to make the animations externally and then import them into godot? I would be willing to provide more details if that would help with giving advice!

help me A little help

2 Upvotes

I'm making a small 2d platformer for fun and to improve my skills (very lackluster) I decided to add what I thought was a simple sprinting mechanic, where you press a button, and every half a second, your speed is increased by a variable (would have a cap) but I haven't figured out how to implement it. I've tried timers, which didn't work they way I wanted, as well as a while loop, which just caused my game to crash. Any ideas on what to do?

Hi, I've made a short Resident Evil inspired game for week-long game jam I've organized with my friends.

https://firstbober.itch.io/seconds-to-midnight

No AI used for graphics, Gemini helped with shaders. Polish dialogues were made with https://piper.ttstool.com/ which I believe is ethically made, and has a pretty nice semi-robotic sound. No audio due to usage of copyrighted music, I couldn't find tracks that would fit so good and my music skills are even lower than my graphics skill.

I would love to get some feedback on the gameplay! Thx so mch.

I honestly didn't expect 100 people to be interested in my game right away.

That number might not be a lot, but honestly I expected way less for the first day.

I didn't do much marketing yet, aside from reddits posts and a couple twitter posts. A creator with 15K followers in twitter did retweet me, which game me at least 40 wishlists alone!

I am now sitting at 135, any advice on keeping the momentum going?

help me Getting back into it, looking for guidance on creating simple 3D demo to test my gameplay

1 Upvotes

I am starting my first 3D project and I want to start by creating a super small slice of my game to test the gameplay. I basically want to create a small floor in a building, a landing area, some hallways, and rooms with doors that your can open.

In 2D I know how I would approach something like this but what is the best approach and nodes to create rigid walls and floors in a 3D game. Also, do I make interactive objects.. objects lol. A door would be an entity that the user can collide with and detect so they can press a button and the door changes state to opening and then opened?

Sorry if this feels trivial. It's been a while since I worked in a project at all, 2D or 3D so I'm also just looking for overall validation and guidance.

help me Need help to learn animations for godot

1 Upvotes

Heya 👋 I didn't see anything on the Godot FAQ that really answered this, or anything that helped me understand where I should actually start, so I figured I'd make a post and ask for some advice.

I've been dabbling with Godot for the last couple of years (I think since Godot 2), but I've never really gotten the hang of it. I've watched multiple tutorials and even tried making a few small projects on my own, but I never felt like I truly understood how everything fits together.

I'm having the most trouble with GDScript, understanding how nodes work together, and animations.

My goal with Godot, aside from making games, is to create YouTube animations and do motion capture tracking for VTubing.

Yes, I know I could use Blender, Unreal, or other engines for this, but I want to build my animation and mocap workflow in Godot so I can reuse those systems and assets in games I make later.

Another reason I want to stick with Godot is because I love open-source software like Blender, especially projects released under the MIT license. The more I see the industry head in questionable directions, the more I want to rely on self-hosted and open-source tools.

A little background about me: I'm an IT Systems Administrator with a background in networking, and I've also worked in DevOps, QA, and automation. I'm pretty comfortable around computers, but programming concepts don't always click for me. I also have AuDHD, which definitely affects how I learn, but I've learned to work with it.

So, what would you recommend? Are there any resources, learning paths, or ways of thinking about Godot that finally made everything "click" for you? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance! 😊😊😊😊

**TL;DR:** I'm struggling to understand GDScript and how Godot's systems (especially nodes and animations) connect together. My goal is to learn animation and motion capture in Godot, then use those skills and assets in future games.

selfpromo (games) Heat haze effect - is it too subtle? (+shader code)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

27 Upvotes

The heat haze effect above the brazier is subtle, I don't want it to be distracting, but maybe it should be stronger?

For interested: the haze is a cylinder above the "fire" with the shader below, similar to the ones on the godotshaders.com, but acting on screen_texture. The noise I use is seamless simplex.

shader_type spatial;
render_mode unshaded, cull_disabled, depth_draw_never;

uniform sampler2D noise_texture : source_color, filter_linear_mipmap, repeat_enable;
uniform sampler2D screen_texture : hint_screen_texture, filter_linear_mipmap;

uniform vec2 distortion_speed = vec2(0.05, 0.3);
uniform float distortion_strength : hint_range(0.0, 0.1) = 0.02;

uniform float vertical_fade_sharpness : hint_range(0.1, 10.0) = 2.0;

void fragment() {
    if (!FRONT_FACING) {
        discard;
    }

    vec2 noise_uv = UV + (TIME * distortion_speed);
    vec4 noise = texture(noise_texture, noise_uv);

    // map from [0, 1] to [-1, 1]
    vec2 offset = (noise.xy * 2.0 - 1.0) * distortion_strength;

    // fade out at top and bottom
    float v_fade = smoothstep(0.0, 0.25, UV.y) * smoothstep(0.75, 0.0, UV.y);
    v_fade = pow(v_fade, vertical_fade_sharpness);

    offset *= v_fade;

    vec2 distorted_screen_uv = SCREEN_UV + offset;
    vec3 background = texture(screen_texture, distorted_screen_uv).rgb;

    ALBEDO = background;
}

selfpromo (games) I made the first story trailer for my cozy dark game in Godot thanks to Dialogue Manager!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

By using Dialogue Manager, I got a really powerful cutscene system out the box in Godot. The way I do my cutscenes is my scenes derive from a cutscene manager script that has utilities for moving characters, performing fades, camera movements to core locations, and then I simply invoke these functions in dialogue files like:

~ start

do player.spawn_party_member("ray")

Ray: Zen, Yunie, come over!

do ray.turn_up()

do! player.move_to_position(ogou.global.position)

do wait(1)

do zen.turn_left()

Ray: Tis good to see you, my friend.

do player.turn_up()

Ogou: Unnngghhh...

It's an amazing system! Check out Shadowrite on Steam, my cozy dark JRPG where two siblings venture into the spirit world to bring their mom back from the dead: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4636570/Shadowrite/
