Miyamoto: "To me, if you’ve burned through the talents of so many people just to achieve [short term profits], that feels like a massive failure."

“So, the reason Nintendo enjoys such strong global support is simply that we don’t start by asking: ‘What’s trending right now?’ Instead, we focus on who we’re actually doing this for. Who is it that’s putting up the money? I really dislike terms like ‘depreciation’ or ‘recouping costs.’ The people funding these projects are doing it to make a fortune, so why celebrate things like ‘we recouped our investment’ or short-term profits? To me, if you’ve burned through the talents of so many people just to achieve that, that feels like a massive failure.

“We’ve always focused on creating the best possible product to match the ‘fun gameplay’ we envision. I think that’s the only real difference. I might sound a bit arrogant saying this [laughs], but if you make things while constantly asking ‘will this make money right away?’ you can’t create anything truly unique or with broad appeal.”

He added: “The ideal relationship between us and the company is one where you get comments like ‘I’m so glad I asked you to do this – it took some time, but we made a huge profit.’ Ultimately, it all comes down to whether we can keep that going.

“After all, the most ‘local’ things – like an individual’s personal hobbies – are often the ones that resonate globally. Conversely, if you try to base your work on things that only seem to have broad appeal, you end up with something generic – something where you can’t tell who actually made it – and that kind of thing actually lacks global strength.

“That’s why, when people at the company ask me what to do, the only advice I can offer is: ‘You should turn your idea into a product in a way that best showcases the fact that you were the one who created it.”

Cherish your gaming buddies. You never know when they'll go.

Sorry if this isnt really appropriate to post here but no one around me will really understand the bonds we make with our gaming friends. I'm having a hard day at work. I was coming in and heard a song that I would 10/10 send to my gaming buddy and we would laugh about it. However I cant anymore he passed away. Now I'm at work doing my all to hold it together and the worst part is when people in your life pass you get the opportunity to get closure at their funerals I will never get that closure. I get to get online and see their profile and know I'll never get to talk to them again. So just be there for your friends it can happen to anyone at anytime.

Edit: I thank you all for your kind words. I was expecting like 1 or 2 people to relate and that's really what I needed was someone to say, hey we get it our gaming friends are real friends because in my life that sentiment thank you all for the kind words I've cried a lot while reading this thread. I thank all of you. You're great people.

Miyamoto says Nintendo is interested in creating new characters, but only if they have global appeal

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto acknowledged in a Famitsu interview this week that “it’s good to create new characters.” At the same time, the company has to be “strict in judging whether they’ll really work globally.” While sharing his thoughts, Miyamoto did say that Nintendo needs “to be more proactive” in creating new characters.

His full response is as follows:

“We’ll be flexible in that regard, but it’s good to create new characters. However, I think we need to be strict in judging whether they’ll really work globally. Even during the development of Splatoon, there were times when we thought, ‘If the characters are going to be like this, wouldn’t it be better to just use Mario?’ And then, when we came up with the prototype for the Inklings that are out there now, we realized, ‘With these, there’s no need to use Mario.’

It’s been 25 years since I arrived at Pikmin, which was the result of my own pursuit of a globally appealing character, so we need to be more proactive to create new ones. I’ll leave that to the younger generation (laughs).”

Here is the full message from Gameplay Group on the last-minute delay:

The official launch of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is almost here, and we can’t wait for players and fans around the world to jump in and start playing.

As we approach launch, we want to update our community on a few platform-specific details.

For Nintendo Switch players, the Nintendo Switch version will be available as the standard edition only. Additionally, cross-play with other platforms and language localization beyond English will not be available. We are committed to bringing these features, along with upgrading to Deluxe Edition, to players as soon as possible and will keep you updated on our timeline and progress.

For the Xbox community, we are forced to delay the release. Due to unforeseen circumstances on a backend feature, we will now launch by September 3. Existing pre-orders will remain active and will not be canceled.

Our priority is delivering the best possible experience on every platform and we are working tirelessly to make that happen. Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support. We’re excited to get everyone into the fight as soon as possible. Tune in here for updates as we have them.

Disgaea Creator Says PlayStation Should Scrap Its Consoles If It Goes All-Digital

The creator of Disgaea, Sohei Niikawa, has criticized PlayStation's reported decision to phase out physical games, arguing that if the company abandons discs entirely, it should "get rid of the hardware" as well. Speaking with Noisy Pixel at Anime Expo 2026, Niikawa said physical games offer something digital never can: a lasting connection between developers and fans through collectibles, signatures, and cherished memories. While he understands the business reasons behind the shift to digital, he believes removing physical media strips away a core part of what makes dedicated gaming hardware meaningful.

Masters of the Universe - not enough power in gaming?

Post image

This is a Steam pix for an upcoming Masters of the Universe 2D brawler called Dragon Pearl of Destruction. Together with an obscure deck builder exclusive on Luna, this lonely bunch constitutes the entire bulk of modern Motu games.

I posted this after watching the film on Prime just now. It was a surprisingly solid watch, and I thought it was worth highlighting how under-used the franchise is in gaming.

An extravagantly visualized setting, colorful characters of all shapes, sizes and genders, plus a ton of action - it has everything you need to churn out crowd pleasing video games.

That has yet to happen. Most of all Motu games ever made were out at least 20 years ago, many in the 80s. You can find a list of them here

https://www.cbr.com/heman-video-games-ranked/

Accordingly, the best Motu game is in fact a free fan-made title out in 2013. Worth checking out I guess if you're even remotely interested in the franchise.

Yes it's certainly arguable that Motu is simply not as popular as I think. The recent box office bomb is cited by many as evidence that this is one of the several “boomer” franchises that overestimate their staying power. I hope that's not true becasue imo the source materials are top notched entertainment.
