Any advice on how to properly lay restless legs so they are all facing the same direction? Probably doesn’t matter much to the fish, but I enjoy a symmetrical fly🙃

First day tying! Im a big fan of the Roza patterns with the light pink beads and fish them a lot, so stuck to first getting materials for some roza inspired basic patterns. Took me a while to dial in the amount of dubbing, but been getting better with reps.

Saw someone use mesh tube in a previous post so decided to experiment.

Squid pattern tied on a #4 barbless streamer hook.
- Crystal flash/buck tail for the tail
- Grizzly hackle for the arms.
- mesh tube for the body/head

To make the thread wraps at the bottom end of the tube off the hook shank I slid the fly onto a tube fly needle.

Skykomish Sunrise tied and designed by George McLeod - this fly was tied sometime in the 1940s. This rare image in high res - shows the famous pattern in its early, full-bodied chenille style.

The story of this fly goes: Ken McLeod and his son, George McLeod, were driving east to the Skykomish River one January morning in 1936. The sun was coming up over the snowcapped Cascades, in colors of red, yellow, and white. “Tie me a fly with those colors in it,” Ken told his son. That evening, George used red tying thread to secure a mix of red and yellow hackle, a red wool body, and a white polar bear wing. The completed fly was named the Skykomish Sunrise. George christened the pattern with three winter steelhead from a single pool near Monroe. The day included a seventeen-pounder. The new fly became a sensation.

Tip: Silver tinsel. Tail: Red and yellow hackle fibers mixed. Body: Red chenille ribbed with flat silver tinsel. Hackle: Red and yellow wound together. Wing: White bucktail.

Hot orange bead, furnace hen hackle, golden brown ice dub, grizzly golden olive marabou on a size 16 hook.

Cleaned her up and thought it looks more like a bad damselfly, so we got a new name:

What are your favourite colour variations?

I’ve tied flies with her before, but I’ve always helped her, often hand over hand. This time when she asked me if she could try her own fly, I allowed her to do it completely on her own including choosing her own materials and free-styling her own pattern. The only assistance I gave her was with the whip finish.

She can’t wait to try it out with the new pink fly rod she just got for her sixth birthday! ☺️

Was inspired to tie up some dragonflies and damselflies on a recent backpacking trip in NM, without much intention on making anything more than flower decorations. Felt this one may be worthy of a shot on the water.

I have some ideas but what would you use them for?
Seeking inspiration.

I recently took a fly tying class and I’m hooked (no pun intended). I’m looking for ways to get some reps in while not buying an entire closet full of materials until I know what I’m doing. I have a vise and tools, so I’m just looking for materials. Trident has kits, but most of what I’m interested in is out of stock to some degree. I’ve also looked at Postfly but I’m not wild about the pattern selection since they have very few I’d use. I mostly just want to do a few Elkhair Caddises and simple nymphs.

I found a website called Fly Sci that claims to sell kits to tie 12 flies for about $40, with the exact patterns I’m looking for. I’m dubious because I can’t find a single review. Anyone have any experience with their kits or a similar recommendation? I’m willing to pay a little extra for curation and the exact materials I need as I dip my toes into this new hobby.

After learning how to use the rotary function I am no longer over wrapping and i am getting better control over placement of materials, as well as greatly improving my consistency from one fly to the next. The original pattern called for the legs to be tied near the head of the fly, and didn't use any wing material. I added the wing material, and didn't like the placement of the legs so I moved them back near the fold in wrap point of the foam.

Only thing i changed between each fly was the dubbing color. I did my best to keep the amount the same, but they vary slightly between each one.

Things don’t always work out how they’re planned. This one went sideways early on and I decided to just keep going and to Hell with it! It didn’t get better…..
