There’s way more fish in this tank I couldn’t even get a picture of. I’d say like 7 more maybe I’m thinking too deep about it. I don’t know how many gallons it is either.

I’m looking for some help restoring this fish tank and getting the water clear again!

Long story short, I inherited this tank and its surprisingly resilient fish after a coworker transferred to another school. The previous owner admitted they didn’t know much about fish tanks (and honestly, neither do I…yet).

From what I can tell, the fish have been overfed for quite a while, which has left a lot of leftover food and debris sitting on the gravel at the bottom.

I tested the water, and everything came back relatively normal except for one level that was slightly high (I think it was ammonia, but I could be wrong. I’m still learning!).

My goal is simple: get rid of the yellow “pee-pee” colored water without hurting the fish.

A friend suggested changing about 30% of the water every few days and treating the new water with conditioner before adding it to the tank, which is what I’ve started doing. They also told me not to clean up the leftover food on the bottom because the tank needs the good bacteria that help keep the fish healthy. Is that good advice, or should I be cleaning some of it out?

I’d really appreciate any advice on where to start. I’d love to get this tank looking healthy again for both the fish and my middle school students, who have become very attached to their new classroom pets. Thanks in advance!

I have a 5 gallon tank on top and a 10 gallon tank on bottom. Each shelf can hold up to 160 pounds each. Is this good or should I find something else?

I have three longfin white skirt tetra and three normal white skirt tetra, 5 amano shrimp (to my knowledge..), 2 salt n pepper cory catfish, and 1 rubber lip pleco. All stores around me are out of the salt n pepper otherwise I’d have 4 or 5. What else should I add?

Also, how can I better the contrast in my tank?

Hey everyone! I just got this 20 gallon tank, heater, and AquaClear 30 filter off FB market. After a good amount of cleaning to remove residue and paint on the outside, it's ready and I'm so excited to fill it up.

My plan is to get one betta fish, 8-10 ember tetras, and maybe 10-15 cherry shrimp or 5 horned nerite snails as bottom feeders.

I will be planting water wisteria, cryptocoryne, and java moss and I'll have some hardscape. I'm thinking rocks and a log, but idk if that will be too packed and tight. I really want a lot of vegetation, but think I need to be mindful of open space for the betta at the top.

Any advice on if the betta would do well with the ember tetra school and cherry shrimp? I'm seeing mostly positive things about mixing the betta with either one of these two. A lot will depend on the individual betta and how many hiding places there are for the shrimp. Would love some more thoughts on the mix though. What order should I add the fish and what precautions do I need to take so they survive the introduction to the tank? Will I need separate plant lights? Is the quantity of fish too high or can I add more over time? Any general newbie advice?

Hey - just needed an opinion of my tank set up. Had him 2 months and seems to be fine. Did a load of research beforehand which I think helped but got some mixed advice from 2 separate shops when I bought him - one said to add natural leafs (sold leaves in a bad for shrimps?) to help with PH levels etc. added them and instantly went a brown tinted water, not a full brown just a tint which wasn’t too bad and again he was happy and levels were good still but it looks mucky - is this an issue, will it clean up, will it create more algae etc. there’s a small bit growing on the glass but nothing I can’t clean away. Also side note do the plants look ok, again new at this so any help is appreciated.

Well…i was missing a fish from my tank when I got home from vacation 2 weeks ago. I never found its body in the tank and assumed the other fish ate it.

Fast forward to tonight - I saw a wet splotch on the side of my tank stand and touched it. It REEKED of fish almost like I stuck my hand in a can of salmon and was gelatinous. Could this possibly be the body of the missing fish?! How is this possible I don’t have an open tank top?! The only opening is for the filter water to flow in.

Hello! I recently cuaght this greeen usnfish 2 monbths ago from a pond. Hes been doing well. I have 2 questions regarind him.

1. wehn i cuahgt him, i did notice some tiny black dust like spots on him but didnt think much of it. However, as this time went on, there are a lot more dots on him. (you may look at 2 photos.) However, he still eats eaglry everyitme and begs for food. Is this really an issue i need to meidcate? I did water test and ammonia 0 nitrite 0 and nitrtates aorund 20 so it prob. woulndt be realted 2 the water, please dont mind the algae. As for parasites, i used to feed him wild minnows but thats stopped about a month back and I made sure the minnows were healhy prior to feedinf.
2. As i plan to upgrade the tnaks, tnakmate reccomenditons?]

What’s with the odd low water level? Is it like a fashion thing or good for the fishes in a way I don’t? I am seeing this pattern often in public spaces.

Not even mentioning the filter fights I think fell on the fish. I told the staff about it and they were like “don’t worry it likes to hide there” and warned me about not interfering.

I guess I will take the their word.

I kinda messed up with this tank and used wet wipes to clean it out. I’ve been aquascaping and such for a couple years now so idrk how I thought this was a good idea. I’m trying to repurpose this tank as it was sitting in my garage but now I gotta clean the residue from the wipes off. I asked Claude and Gemini. They told me to rub 70% isopropyl alcohol around it, fill and rub a 1 parts bleach, 20 parts water mixture around it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, rinse it out with hot water multiple times, let it sit for 2-3 days, let it sit for a day in tap water, pour the water out, then cycle it. I’ve already gotten up to the let it sit for 2-3 days step and am posting this to make sure this is safe for the fish. The AIs’ thought processes were that the alcohol separates the toxic film/chemicals from the wall, the bleach mixture destroys the chemicals, and the repeated rinsing moves the chemicals out of the tank. Pls reply to this so I know if I’m doing this right or if I should js get a new tank. The tank is rounded, 10 gallons and will be used for breeding Molly fish. I would attach photos but don’t know how.

I was thinking of turning my old 10 gal into a live tank and wanted to know if anyone had any advice on what plants and substrates I should use.

Hi! I am looking into getting some fish/a fish, but I know absolutely nothing about habitats, what kind of fish to get, etc.
My only experience with fish is a goldfish we got from a school carnival that lived for about 7ish years when I was a kid. It lived in a small tank (no more than five gallons) on our kitchen counter and was fed a bit of that brown pellet food every day. It basically ate every single goldfish we tried to put in the tank with it. We cleaned its tank every week, but other than that it really just survived out of sheer will and determination. Its name was Pearl.
Anyways, I am wanting to get another tank. Realistically I can only get a five gallon or less tank, which I know is not ideal. I also want to keep the number of species minimal because of the size limits and my limited knowledge. I have considered also getting shrimp and/or a snail, but I don’t know if that is a good idea given the limited space. I also have cats, so it would need a lid. I have considered a betta, but I would love to know if there are any other options! I also need to know what I should get for the tank like plants, filters, chemicals (do you even need those), and all of that! Basically someone give me a tutorial on how to start and run a beginner fish tank please.

I just came back from a lovely 11hour shift at McDonald's after changing the water earlier in my tank and now I find this gas/ warmer water rising from the colder water near the heater and I have no real idea what that is. So I would like to ask some more experienced people.

I have two theories:

1) there is some sort of gas leaking out of the heater( it's a cheap used one that came with the aquarium when I bought it and I don't really trust it)

I will buy a new one later this month and see if it changes

2) since I changed the water in my tank and pushed the heater deeper in the water and since I have a half moon shaped tank I believe it is bending the wavelength of light in such a way that I can actually see the warmer water rising in the water. This theory comes from the fact that I noticed near the heater and because the pattern looks like smoke in the atmosphere rising up in the air.

I really hope it's the second theory and there isn't any weird gasses/ liquids being diluted in my water as we are talking right now.

Would love to hear your opinions thank you very much.
