[Question] Cant make friends anymore

I've been playing FF for about 5 years this July, and the game has genuinely changed my life. It helped me immensely in finding myself and dealing with my social anxiety. Along the way, I've met some amazing people who have gone on to become lifelong friends.
Recently, though, I've been having a really hard time making friends that I actually feel close to. I feel like it used to be a lot easier to meet people and then organically grow close with them.
I'm on EU. What am I doing wrong? Is just approaching people not enough anymore? How did you guys meet your close friends in game?

[Question] Is this game worth getting into if I like FF but don't like MMOs?

I've played 15, 16 and 7 remakes and loved all 4. I've never really played an MMO and am kind of against them, I like being able to do my own thing without caring about/needing others. Am I going to be able to play solo or will I have to team up with people? Planning to buy complete edition through the sale on the SE website

Edit: okay, okay, it's been like 5 minutes and I've gotten at least 12 yes notifications! I'll be downloading the free trial later today. Hoping this can pull me out of my gaming slump.

[Discussion] Starting this game is a nightmare

Now I don't mean starting out at level one, or even the starting area. It's not the character design or what name to come up with. It's not even the download size, the nightmare is literally logging into the game. Let me explain...

So I haven't played in years and years, so I log download it expecting to make an account, login, and play. Right? Wrong.

No, the ID is tied to your Sony account and you can't enter new/different one. No big deal I should be able to reset my password if I have access to that email address from 15 years ago. Luckily I do, easy....

I put in the info, get the email, reset the password and go to login. Wrong password. OK I'm 99% sure I typed the right password but let me wait a little and change it again.

Repewy above steps, same result. Hmm... To Google/Reddit I go. Most of the comments talk about activating 2fa (can't login to the account), a spacing error, and literally just mostly useless suggestions. Until someone says wait. So I do. An hour. I finally get in, but somethings off.

This isn't the Square Enix ID that's showing up on my ps5. So now I can login to the Square Enix site, but that's not the username shown so I still can't play the game. Do I give up? Not so fast!

So I dig a little bit more and a little more. It turns out Square Enix has this genius idea to make your email address case sensitive. Something so historically not case sensitive is now case sensitive. I enter the password new password taking into consideration case sensitivity and alas!! It still doesn't work. Wrong password. Probably because I changed the password on a different case sensitivity.

Now I'm on my umpteenth attempt to change the password and wait before I inevitably get locked out of the account again.

All I'm trying to do is play the game but I cannot login. Why is this such a nightmare?

Playing with an organized desk and a badass pc rig makes a huge difference! Got the laptop on the side for Faloop, which makes Hunts & Fates a lot less painful. But, coming from PS5 gaming ARR, I’m soo used to using the game pad.

Lvl 88 on my 1.0 legacy WOL, and I’m only at Ishgard in HW. Powering through the leveling with my irl family FC now so we can catch up to where we were before I started loving this 1.0.

[PvP Discussion] Would a "PVP: The Arcadion" mode work?

Basically, it would be a 1v1 mode where you fight on a random Arcadion stage. The bosses would still perform their mechanics, but they wouldn't target players directly. Instead, both players would have to dodge the boss mechanics while fighting each other at the same time.

Each job would keep a small set of its core abilities, along with a few PvP-exclusive actions. For example, there could be a knockback ability that lets you push your opponent into boss AoEs or even off the stage as a tactical play. After being hit by a knockback, the opponent would have about two seconds to use an anti-knockback ability. These custom actions would then go on cooldown, forcing players to rely on their normal attacks and defensive abilities until they're available again.

The idea is that every match feels different because both the arena and the boss mechanics change, forcing players to adapt instead of relying on the same strategy every game.

[Question] What am I missing ?

Hi all

Played ffxiv about a year ago and had played about a year.

I got as far as starting DT but stopped a little ways in, then moved to wow and have been there since.

Anyways I’m getting the itch to dive back into FF but whereas I’ve found lots do things to do in WoW I struggled in FF.

I recently read of domain enclave, the island place to level up, palace of the dead by chance.

So my question is what gems or things you can do can have you found ? As someone who only ever did MSQ what am I missing ?

Thanks everyone

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your answers. I need to make a note file and list everything. Looks like there is lots and lots out there I haven’t yet experienced.

[Question] Quick character creation question

Ive seem people having different hairstyles, piercings and tattoes (on different places other than above the eye) on regular human race character. Since i dont have those options, can i unlock those by playing the game or people just used mods on those pics?

And do i unlock gear transmog from the start? Ive seen a few "glamour" guides on youtube so i assume i have to grind for cosmetic options. Can i focus on that from the start?🤣

[Discussion] An idea to combat the stalking plugins

I’m sure this has been asked a thousand times so I’ll delete later but
Why won’t Square just remove the option to see other players location in the game to combat the stalking plugins? Especially with how the blacklist function is straight dog shit, letting the blocked person see you and not let you see them. We really don’t need to know that a person is in their private home/etc. They can tell us that themselves if needed.
Just a lazy idea.

[Tech Support] crash on startup fix

Hey so ever since i purchased the game on steam, it had this weird glitch/bug where it would immediately crash after i tried launching it from steam. I tried multiple fixes, even contacted square enix support and nothing happened.

So when i was looking for a fix for ANOTHER bug(it was about discord overlay), i found this one post on a square enix forum that said all you had to do was change your computer's name, so i tried that just because and it turns out it actually worked lol.

So just spreading the word, if you cant launch your game through steam try changing your computer's name on windows settings, hope this helps someone as it helped me

[Question] Changing/Shuffling music OUTSIDE of your house?

Forgive me if I’m stupid here, but I’m sitting here… in the Mist… as always, just crafting in front of the marketboard. My boyfriend also plays but on a PC a few feet away from me (I’m on ps5). Where is he? Same place doing the same thing. Then, he has to leave the house to get some stuff so my actual house goes silent… and I hear it.
Ul’Dah music??? wtf? I legit thought I was hearing things. Later on… Limsa music?????? wtf how and why?? I turn up my music and it’s… regular Mist music (or housing location, if you will). I then turn up his music and sure as hell, his music is different???
I ask him when he gets home how does he have different music playing? We are not inside the house and it’s shuffling from like various City’s music. He tells me he has no idea and he never changed any settings. He then tells me that he never knew my music sounded the way it did? Mind you, we’ve been playing together for YEARS so I find that hard to believe but maybe he just never noticed. Regardless…

HOW do you play different music/shuffle the music? He had to have done something at some point and doesn’t remember. I was under the impression you couldn’t unless using your jute box in the house.

[Discussion] PSA: Please give your dps commendations

Folks we are now almost 13 years into XIV relaunch, and tanks/healers are still the commendation sponge.

Please show love to dps, if you are a dps and your fellow dps is ok and not rude, give each other a comm!!

It's a small thing but getting a little bit of appreciation can cheer up a dps players day a wee bit.

[Question] Legacy player - been away for over a decade. What do I need to know?

Hey everyone,

I last played FFXIV in 2016. I saw the end, and the realm reborn, and I have a legacy lvl 50 bard. I stopped playing back in 2016 having never completed ARR (got pretty close), largely due to burnout and life changes.

But I'm craving a return!

Life's changed a lot since then though, I play in smaller chunks, have more responsibilities and can't jump on a mic very often.

My questions are:

  1. Appreciate it's an MMO, but how much of the content is locked behind needing a party of humans?
  2. I'm looking for a full restart from 0, new character and all. Are there any resources out there for returning players that cover what's worth my time and what isn't (I'm heavily story / lore motivated)
  3. Is it possible to seamlessly switch between PS5 and PC these days?
  4. For anyone who also has a legacy account - are the legacy servers still a thing?

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the help. If there's anything else you think I should know, please feel free to jump in!

[Discussion] My experience getting The Final Fish in 2 months

Post image
169 Upvotes

Basically, I like big fish and I cannot lie so I instead try to convince others liking fishing is absolutely normal. And that big fishing is not going to ruin your life and sanity. Also, an excuse to talk about big fishing.

I felt a DoHDoL-shaped hole in my life once I had gotten all my Oizys relics, so inspired by the RathGames video where he took part in the 24h legendary marathon, I decided to start big fishing on a whim. The Beast of Brewer’s Beacon quest had been on my quest list for ages so I figured I could do it, then Feast of Famine to see if I liked this enough to continue, then work my way through as and when. It was supposed to be ‘free and easy’, but I unexpectedly really enjoyed it. Ended up getting The Final Fish (3/6/26) less than 2 months after I completed Beast of Brewer’s Beacon (13/4/26). And procrastinated about as long on writing this post.

I could accomplish this so quickly thanks to rng and the work of those who had fished before me: A Fisher’s Guide to Eorzea (A Fisher's Guide to Eorzea) compiled by Fruity Snacks from the efforts of the fishing community, Carbuncle Plushy’s tracker (FFX|V Fish Tracker App), various reddit posts and comments about their fishing experiences. Look to those who fished before to guide those who fish after. So, I decided to pay the favour forward.

How I approached big fishing
Firstly, the most important element to how long this takes is luck. I think I got really lucky finishing within 2 months. I did already have Zalera from a previous mogtomes event and The Salter from...not sure when (probably while doing ARR fisher quests??), but I doubt that would have added much to the time. This is more my approach to planning for The Final Fish instead of staring at a list of 289 fish and wondering where to go. Inventory management is also an issue (thank goodness for the dye consolidation update halfway through).

I also have a job where I cannot step away to fish at all during work and did not want to compromise sleep on working days because I need that sleep. Not to mention the rest of life that goes on and I am not cancelling to fish. Therefore, I wanted to plan my fishing such that I did as much as I could within the time I had available. It also worked well in reducing frustration because it spread out difficult fish over the entire duration while I still made progress on easier fish in between. I only made an exception to wake up on a weekday at 3am for Cinder Surprise because it was my last fish and the next window I could make it to was a month after.

u/rfandomization’s post (The Final Fish: what it's like in 7.1 : r/ffxiv) was what originally guided my approach to prioritisation of windows. I also used u/Anaximandar1’s post (My Big Fish Journey : r/ffxiv) that was linked within to further add onto it.

Top priority list:

1- Big 3: Ealad Skaan, Cinder Surprise, The Ruby Dragon

2- Fish with infrequent windows (potentially 1wk or longer)

  • HW: Bobgoblin bass (can have more than 1 month downtime!), Thunderscale
  • SB: Banderole, Suiten Ippeki, Duskfish, The Unconditional
  • ShB: Deephaunt, Aster Trivi, The Ondotaker, Python Discus, The Sinsteeped
  • EW: Vidyutvat Wrasse, Eehs Fan

3- Fish with infrequent windows (few days downtime or more) that typically take multiple tries to catch

  • ShB: Lancetfish
  • EW: Sidereal Whale

These fish I pinned on the fish tracker always (until caught) and went for whenever I could.

I then went per expansion ARR->EW for bait inventory management reasons and prioritised among fish within the expansion:

4- Fish with downtime >2 days

  • I just looked at the tracker for low % uptime fish and checked for downtime >2 days. May vary depending on weather rng.
  • ARR: Dawn Maiden
  • HW: Paikiller, Moggle Mogpom, Thousand Fin
  • SB: Nhaama’s Treasure, Pinhead
  • ShB: The Mother of all Pancakes, Ondo Sigh, Celestial, Moonlight Guppy, Sunken Tome, Leannisg, Pearl Pipira, Steel Fan, Recordkiller, The Horned King, Aquamaton+Shadeshifter
  • EW: Furcacauda, Glit Dermogenys, Hyphalosaurus, Antheian Dahlia, Snowy Parexus, Onyx Knifefish, Chlorophos Deathworm, Wakeful Warden, Durdina Fish

5- Fish with a reputation for potentially requiring multiple windows or I found they took longer to get

  • ARR: Feast of Famine fish, Ignus Horn, Floating Boulder, Spearnose
  • HW: Sea Butterfly, Madame Butterfly, Charibenet, Raimdellopterus, Opabinia, Problematicus, Aphotic Pirarucu
  • SB: Stethacanthus, Warden of the Seven Hues, Drepanaspis, Xenacanthus, Diamond-eye
  • ShB: Henodus Grandis, The Greater Serpent of Ronka, Listracanthus
  • EW: Gharlichthys, Browned Banana Eel, Rimepike

6- Fish with time + weather conditions

7- Remaining fish (usually slot between more important windows, sometimes went for half a window only etc)

When I was left with maybe 10 fish or mostly waiting on rare/difficult fish within an expansion, I added the next expansion to the tracker because I enjoyed running from one window to another continuously. There is no need to do that if you prefer to take it slow. There will always be another window. You will get there eventually.

Now I get to talk about the actual experience of big fishing and I will do it through stats:

Fish that took the most windows

  1. Henodus Grandis (14W, 1S)
  2. Sea Butterfly (12W, 4S): To be fair I initially kept messing up the bait switching, and this didn’t take as much time overall as some other fish.
  3. Lancetfish (11W, 2 intuitions triggered, 1S): Partly on me as I didn’t realise I could use fish eyes for ShB initially…
  4. Stethacanthus (7W, 1 intuition, 2S): I hate this
  5. Cinder Surprise (7W, 7 intuitions, 1S): Deserving of its reputation, the final fish I caught for the title due to tragic windows
  6. Warden of the Seven Hues (7W, 4 intuitions, 4S): Seven windows for seven hues is very poetic
  7. Ignus Horn (6W, 6S): It’s just low bite chance and slippery

Everything else took 5 windows or less.

Most annoying fish

  1. Stethacanthus (7W, 1 intuition, 1S): It took SO LONG each attempt and sculptors practically don’t exist. Wasting hours being unable to get intuition is the worst in my opinion because it feels like you don’t even get anywhere near the fish. The process was also technical and required concentration. The only fish I dislike more than Stethacanthus is the Pearl Eyes I kept catching instead of Sculptors.
  2. Lancetfish (11W, 2 intuitions, 1S): Similar to Stethacanthus because getting 2 Mora Tectas is so difficult, but Fish Eyes makes it more manageable. I was just dumb and forgot that Fish Eyes can be used in ShB until my 9th attempt or so haha. The fishing hole location is also inconvenient to get to.
  3. Henodus Grandis (14W, 1S): Getting the Spearhead Squid to mooch was a pain in itself. I would come down early to prep squids with Spareful Hand and use them up once the window starts, then sometimes only catch one more squid within the entire window. Also the tease of getting !!! but it's just Henodus.
  4. The Matriach (23S): The fact it is an all day fish is deceptive, it slips SUPER often. I remember fishing until the fish got wary and having to leave.
  5. The Second One (3W, 0S): It took me 200+ bait to get that one bite, though thankfully it did not slip. It was really boring since it is a straight catch fish.
  6. Magic Carpet (2W): I remember trying to catch this for the desynthesis glam and failing. And then I got Helicoprion early in its window and mistakenly thought I could catch Magic Carpet in that window as well (the windows sometimes overlap, but that one did not). I only realised my mistake near the end of the window, after catching another Helicoprion but of course no Magic Carpets. I did finally get the glam though.
  7. Armorer (2W): This one has history. I remember trying to catch it I think for mogtomes. I tried for a bit and gave up and it kind of made me not keen to do big fishing back then (along with struggling to catch big fish for glam desynth). When I started proper big fishing, I took 2 windows to get it.

Also, somehow when I think of the Labyrinthos music I am immediately reminded of fishing at the hole for Hyphalosaurus (2W, 5 intuitions, 0S) and Circuit Tilapia (3W, 0S) and my heart rate increases.

Fish I got lucky on

  1. Ealad Skaan (1W, 0S): This was the first fish I went for after completing Feast of Famine as a window happened to be coming up. Got !!! on my second cast of the window and thought surely not, it’s going to slip. Then I got it and was like…ok so is Ruby Dragon or Cinder Surprise going to be the problem (it was Cinder). And if you caught one of the big 3, you’ve got to catch all the other big fish right?
  2. The Unconditional (1W, 0S): Got it on the very first cast. Realised how lucky I was with that when I thought why not go for another and subsequently slipped !!! 8 times within the window. I did not manage to catch a second one.
  3. Ninja Betta (1W, 0S): Got the mooch chain done on my first cast. I had actually messed up and forgot to use Patience, but was lucky enough to get a large sized fish so I could do the mooch chain. Also got the Assassin Betta minion on desynthesis and that accompanied me for the rest of my fishing endeavours. My lucky charm.
  4. Suiten Ippeki (1W, 0S): The fish where I made the mistake of muscle memory clicking rest instead of hook on !!!, but fortunately got another bite soon after and caught it, else that mistake would really sting.
  5. Charibenet (1W, 1 intuition, 0S): I remember seeing people complain about this fish so I planned to start catching it before starting on the rest of HW fish, only to get it very quickly into my first intuition.
  6. Bobgoblin Bass (1W, 0S): Just the fact it did not have 1 month long downtime while I was big fishing. I had to skip 2 windows because of work but even then that was about 2 weeks of waiting in total and I caught it very early into the window (and caught another 2 in the window because I already prepped, might as well).

Honorable mention to Frozen Regotoise, where I took so long to find the fishing hole I missed the entire window. Then when the next window came around, I caught it on the very first cast before even using surface slap. It classifies as both annoying and lucky I suppose.

Fish I enjoyed (unironically)

  • Warden of the Seven Hues (7W, 4 intuitions, 4S): The fish that taught me so much about prep, intuition and how to manage GP. By the time I caught the Warden, there was the satisfaction of having learnt how to reliably get intuition each window (triple hook is key). I also do like how often the windows are up, so even if it doesn’t work out, just come back another time at your convenience. I like fish that respect that you have a life. I liked it so much I took the Wardens of Pride event in June as an excuse to drag 2 friends to go big fishing. I caught my 2nd Warden in 2 windows but unfortunately my friends didn't get any. Now to find more big fish to lure them in with…
  • Sea Butterfly (12W, 4S): Am I crazy for enjoying this because I would try to squeeze a 3rd intuition in one window (regardless of whether I could use the full duration) just because I could? I felt engaged throughout the window, but the window is not so long it becomes tiring. You can get at least one intuition (usually 2) per window, so you feel like you’re getting somewhere. Windows are frequent enough that I can pick and choose when to do it without much consequence, so if I got a little bored I just skipped some windows and went for other fish. My main issue was forgetting to swap away from metal spinner.
  • Namitaro (2W, 1 intuition, 0S): Namitaro made me understand the thrill of big fishing without too much frustration. Having not gotten the Giant Takitaro at all for my first window, having one slip in the 2nd window, then catching it on the very last cast of the 2nd window. Chumming and resting hoping for a !!!, watching the intuition timer run down to 0 with dread then hearing the intuition jingle for the first time ever was a dopamine hit like no other. This is probably what made me want to continue big fishing.
  • Banderole, Ruby Dragon, Deephaunt, Durdina Fish, Ondotaker, Cinder Surprise, Gharlichtys, Catastrophizer, Eehs Fan: These were enjoyable because of the fishers I met, one of the reasons I enjoy big fishing so much. Fishing is something where instantly you have a common topic and people also have time to chat. Some fishers have been really chill to stand around chatting even after a window. Even if they don’t chat, many will cheer on and congratulate each other during the process. Or you know, commiserate in lack of Cinder Surprise. Usually, the rarer or more difficult to catch a fish is the more likely you will meet others there, so it offsets some of the frustration. And when they tell you how they are on their 10th Durdina Fish window, you feel better about not getting the fish yet haha (to the catgirl I met, you were indeed right that it is usually a 3 window fish as I did catch it on my 3rd window). Thank you to all the fishers who made my day feel so much better with your kind presence.

I really enjoyed the experience. I did not find myself wanting to quit at any point. It felt like any frustration would largely vanish once I caught the fish, especially if it is cute like Aquamaton. And whatever lingered was not enough to outweigh the fun I got from the experience overall. I would happily accompany someone to do it again (but probably on a less intense schedule). I also finally have motivation to continue MSQ so I can start big fishing in Dawntrial. And finally get the orange scrip gear to craft BiS for DoHDoL. The unending DoHDoL journey continues.

Hopefully this post was helpful or enjoyable for someone out there!

[Lore Discussion] Looking for a Spoiler Free Story Explanation Video/Series For Refresher Spoiler

I know the title may sound strange, but that's what I am looking for.

I want to watch a full synopsis of the story of FF14 by each section after I have played them to seal in the story, but i don't want the sections to spoil what comes ahead before I get there.

I have tried to find videos on the story and they seem to either be condensed synopsis that are just the "need to know", which I don't necessarily want, or have spoilers in them for things that are to come in the next section of the story.

For example, I am currently working on the HW post patches and I want to watch a video that goes in detail of the ARR story and the HW story, but not tell anything about the other expansions until I get there, and then I can watch that section.

I have not looked at the examples I am going to post below, but I would like to know if these sound like what I would like, and if not, some other alternatives would be appreciated:

[Discussion] I hope the designers are aware of how unique FF14 is in that there are interesting jobs that don't require keeping track of short cooldowns. That's something that should remain true in Evercold, IMO.

When I look into other MMOs, I'm repeatedly disappointed to find that there are no interesting classes/builds that don't require keeping track of short cooldowns. There's nothing like Reaper and Red Mage (maybe Dancer and others too) in that way. Reaper's shortest cooldown that really counts is 30 seconds, and for Red Mage, it's 25 seconds. I notice this because I hate keeping track of short cooldowns, but if Evercold changes things in a certain way, a meaningful percentage of players might find out that they don't like it either and just didn't realize. Some of them might even have previously been okay with that playstyle (in another MMO or FF14 job they haven't played in a long time) but find that they aren't okay with it any more.

It's not like I'm in love with the sheer number of long cooldowns you often have to keep track of in FF14, but it's much better than having to keep track of short cooldowns.

If anyone knows of any interesting builds in other MMOs that don't require keeping track of short cooldowns, or only one or two, please let me know. Thief in Guild Wars 2 is one exception, and there are probably some in WoW. If a such a build is viable for going through a game's story but not good enough for parties, that's fine. Short cooldown abilities are okay if you don't actually have to keep track of them. For example, sometimes enough of them line up well enough for a not-too-crazy rotation to be a viable part of a build, or maybe there's one that's important to use only right before or after you activate something that procced.

To be reasonably complete: (Edit: Brain hiccup. I could have sworn there were a couple Reaper cooldowns that were just slightly longer than the GCD, and, recently, I've been playing something in which the GCD is 1.5. So when I saw, on the official job guide table, some 2.5's after three 1.5's in a row, I thought I had confirmed what I was looking for.) I don't remember ever having to pay attention to Reaper's 2.5 second cooldowns. Do they exist only to prevent latency exploits? Regardless, a couple things with a cooldown slightly longer than the GCD is okay. Because Hell's Egress is a movement ability, a shorter cooldown is understandable, and 20 seconds is not that bad anyway.

A specific thing I realized while typing this is how Reaper's alternating spender abilities (as in "builder/spender") are much better, IMO, than having spender abilities with varying cooldowns. Reaper allows for a left/right or up/down symmetrical action bar setup that makes eye-hand coordination and muscle memory mesh well.

[Question] Is there a way to have a crossbar shared across just my DoH skills and not show up on my DoW classes?

I want to have a shared hotbar for my DoH skills but I don't want to have to cycle past it when I'm on my DoW or DoL classes, is there a way to have it not be shared with a specific class? Or should I just set up each DoH bar on its own?

[Question] Swapping GC alliance for my Free Company

Hi Hi!

My FC and I are looking to swap from Ul'dah to Limsa but we've never done a move before. I've read a few different posts on websites but they're all 6+ years old and I wanna make sure nothing's changed.

What exactly happens when you change your GC alliance for your FC? Do we lose credits, actions, I know the GC specific armor can change.... We just wanna make sure we know what will all happen before we do this.
