Meta: Mod Announcement New Official Discord

As some of you may have heard, Reddit is discontinuing its public chat offerings. This was a real bummer for us because our sub had a very active chat. After some discussion, we decided to migrate our chat to a new home.

We are excited to present our shiny new Discord server!

When you join, please fill out the application that pops up, including a link to your Reddit profile so we can verify you. We strive to maintain a safe, chill atmosphere for everyone. We are also hoping to add some weekly activities with time.

Come say hello!

Edit: As a branch of the sub, we do require at least a week or two's history in the sub here to join.

Weekly Plug Party! Use this thread to promote your stuff and see what others have to share!

We typically have a rule that all self-promotion must be run by the mods first, but that rule will not apply in this thread.

So feel free to plug whatever you've got going on, share an event you want to promote, a video you made, an article you wrote, a new subreddit, or even a service you'd like to offer.

Other rules still apply, so your plug should remain relevant to the general topic of "exchristian", no proselytizing, etc., and all surveys must still follow our survey policy to be approved.

Rant This fucking pastor won’t leave me alone

My (f22) boyfriend (m22) occasionally works for a pastor who is a family friend. Since he was a teen she has helped him make a little money since he has always had a hard time finding a job. He helps her around her house and yard, and helps her (let’s call her Piper, f80 something) feed homeless, fix up the church and much more. She’s always been nothing but sweet to me however more recently she’s been pushing me to go to her church and it’s getting on my nerves. I’ve always been an atheist but to appease her I just pretend to go with all her delusions.

About a month ago, my boyfriend and I went to her house to help her with something small and we stayed and talked for a little bit. After I said we were getting ready to go, she said ‘alright so I’ll see you on Sunday?’ I said no because I had work, I really didn’t. She said ‘you work on Sunday? Well you need to go to church, all young people need to stay in church. My church is all about educating young people about the lord and his teachings. So just consider going.’ I said maybe another time and left.

A couple weeks ago my boyfriend told me about how she was asking invasive questions while he was working for her. They were talking about me and my job and all of a sudden she asked if we have intercourse. Obviously my boyfriend lied and said no. She said ‘well one day 10 years down the line when you marry her she’ll realize you weren’t having sex with her out of respect, she needs to understand that.’ He left it at that because she’s just an old head and can’t comprehend anything past a Bible. My boyfriend also joked and said ‘I wish I could’ve told her that I can still respect my girlfriend while I plow her into the sheets’ but I still found it gross that she’d even be comfortable enough to ask that.

Today I went to her house to pick up my boyfriend because he worked for her and we ended up staying an extra hour so that he could finish up. As we were talking she randomly said ‘now that you’re here, you can help us at church this Sunday’ and I said no, I have work. She said ‘excuses, excuses’. Respectfully I only get 2 days off a week, I’m not going to get up early af in the morning just to be somewhere for 4 hours that I don’t want to be. And since I told her I’m working, the fact that she thinks I can just skip work to attend her church is ridiculous.

I only know it’s going to get worse when I get married and even when I’m engaged, she’s a nice lady but I don’t wanna have to just out myself and say I don’t believe her delusions, and make her try to convert me. And also my boyfriend does his best to defend me but with her she doesn’t hear anything she doesn’t want to hear so it would be pointless. I didn’t mean to stay long at her house today, but she told me to call her and said to ‘come to her house and talk’ and it was just about her giving me some antiques she thinks I might like, but now I know not to stay long if I don’t have to anymore just so I don’t have to be spiritually harassed. I am too atheist for this shit.

EDIT: bf is an atheist and acknowledged how deluded and obnoxious she can be

EDIT 2: after all this she invited me and me boyfriend somewhere. She invited us to go with her to a special city 2 hours away, that I love. While the offer is tempting, she mentioned that we’d stay the night there and she’d pay for most of it. I told her that it sounds fun and I’ll consider it but I don’t think I want to go thinking about it all. For one, obviously me and my bf are going to want to share a room and not be sharing a room with her. She’d freak out if me and him slept in the same bed. When I go on trips, I enjoy having a drink. That’s not to say I can’t go without it, but as a grown adult it’s just something I do from time to time. I also don’t want to be on anyone else’s time or not be my true self and have to pretend to be a good Christian girl for a couple days. It’s also at a beach, so she’s going to expect me to dress like a nun while I’m there. At this point I’m just going to tell her I can’t when the time comes

Rant Before I go to sleep, I just wanna say if God of the bible exists..fuck him.

Upvotes

I grew up with a lot of trauma and mental illness. Prayed to God a thousand times, studied the fucking bible, went to all the bible studies and church services. Asked I'm to take it away, and he did not. Then I went to therapy. And in 6 months I have healed more than I ever did in church. Church is useless and I'm glad I left it.

Help/Advice My ex left me for Jesus

Literally. I have been ex christian since I was a teenager, I'm now 32. I was in a 6 year relationship with someone who abruptly left me for Jesus, after six years of a non religious relationship... What would cause this? I'm SO confused.

He told me the night he left that he's praying for me and I am enough for Jesus. It was the single most bizarre experience coupled with heartbreaking experience of my life. Little to no extra explanation, just.. suddenly fell in love with Jesus more that our six year relationship where we planned to marry and have kids. Any ideas why this would happen? Any tips for accepting this event?

Rant God in the Bible is way different from how Christians describe him

Like they say he’s all loving and wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he’s done some pretty fucked up stuff. He killed all the firstborns in Egypt for something they didn’t even do, he flooded the world, he sends people to eternal torture just for not loving him, I could go on, it’s pretty bad.

Trigger Warning - Purity Culture now realizing how dystopian the christian view of intimacy is Spoiler

i'm putting a trigger warning just in case. but today i was scrolling on instagram and saw this reel. a group of christians declaring that making out before marriage is not okay. like. are we for real. these people genuinely can't do ANYTHING.

now that i'm out of high control religion, i just find it so shocking how these people genuinely believe that kissing the person they are dating will lead to "sin"... i am so glad that i can now do whatever i want without the guilt and shame for doing things that are completely natural.

Image User review for A Star Is Born (2018) on a Christian website

Found on Christian Answers. Six of the seven user reviews are highly offended by the movie. Surprisingly, the website's own review acknowledges the high quality of filmmaking.

This is the entirety of this person's review. Covered up the last name even though it might not even be a real name and isn't connected to any account (and because "Karen" pretty much says it all).

Help/Advice For how long should I keep my "different faith" hidden?

Upvotes

For context, I am a born-again Christian. At least, that's what I'm supposed to be. As I grew older, I started to have this growing doubt about God's existence.

And whenever I questioned my family or even suggested having no denomination, they said that it was impossible. Additionally, they suggested I should go to church more. Considering how I haven't gone for a month.

I feel great, honestly.

And they suggested I should go again. And by suggestion.. its not really an option. Especially after I had suggested different faiths. They said I was straying the path, or something. I don't really want to believe in God anymore, since his existence contradicts the existence of free will, suffering, but I won't get too into that.

I can't really talk to them about diverse religion, they immediately get the suspicion that I'm straying away or something. And while they are right.. conversations about different faiths feel pretty circled back to their own. Can't really blame them.

Feels pretty depressing, honestly. I have to lie to them and everyone around me. Oh, and I'm a humanist.

A secular humanist, someone who believes that a human is in charge of their own life. And should be kind to others in this one life they have. That's it.

Should I keep this going until I move out?

It's starting to affect my mental health too, if I'm being honest. I feel so alien from the rest of them, and I'm scared that when they find out, eventually.. they won't be so accepting and will absolutely try to take me back in.

Image Anyone else have that one Christian song that's forever intertwined within their childhood

Post image
21 Upvotes

I have a lot of Christian songs that are intertwined in my child but I feel like Voice of truth by Casting Crowns is probably THE song that I listened to the most, it takes me back to a time when I wasn't miserable and traumatized by Christianity, like when I was a genuine believer and not a passive believer,

Even though I've completely abandoned my faith I still come back to this one song with fondness and happiness, I look at this song and feels like sense of hope in me that I'll get thru life, maybe not having an invisible entity with its hand on my shoulder but that I can trust myself to do the right thing and do what I can to make my life as purposeful as possible.

Trigger Warning - Toxic Religion Do you hate it when Christians blame demons for pretty much everything too? Spoiler

I overheard my mom talking to a Christian friend last night over the phone. That friend has a 17 yo autistic son and my mom really told her to anoint him daily and watch him get normal over the coming days, because apparently, doctors don't know what the Hell they are doing when they diagnose anyone; everyone should know that autism is an "evil spirit". She said the same thing to another friend she talked to beforehand about homosexuality, which she especially dislikes, saying it is disgusting and caused by demons, BUT she still believes God loves the sinner, just not the sin (although he will still burn them for it forever, but then softened her rhetoric again by saying God never made humans to go to Hell, only Satan and demons). I long for the day I don't have to hear nonsense like this anymore, guys.

Question Quality documentaries/films against religion that is available in Blu-ray and DVD?

Hi, I am looking for documentaries and films against religion, (the repercussions of conversion therapy, indoctrination, etc as long as it's anti-religion) that's available in DVD and Blu-ray? I saw that Jesus Camp (2006) is available on DVD but I am still looking for other ones that I can curate and safekeep.

Discussion Is there anyone who has left Christianity after finding Christ at a low point?

Hello everyone, I just wanted to know if anyone has have similar stories to me, I personally found Christ at a point in time where my life was in chaos but now that I feel better, the bible just seems all silly to me. However, it just makes me feel like I used Christianity to feel better and just tossed it away.

Edit: thank you everyone this had made me feel much better, I’m glad I’m not alone on this topic 😂

Help/Advice Hello im 16 recently deconstructed think the Christian god doesn’t make sense and i am convinced by psalm 22

So i know the gospel writers knew the psalms and took it to their agenda i agree and that the piercing is no where to be found but when i see the dead sea scrolls i see that people think it is likely that it says piercing or dug out by scholars and i have no argument to refute this i have ocd and i am scared that if i get this wrong i am sent to hell but others say it translates to dug out if that was the case why is the similarity so uncanny if it likely says dug out then why is the similarity so close i don’t understand i don’t want this coincidence to be real i need some help i try seeing scholars like dan mcellen and the alternative doesn’t make sense

Help/Advice When should I come out?

Hi, I'm 17 and left christanity a few months ago while working at a christian summer camp ironically. Virtually everone I know are christians and I can count on one hand the number of athiest/agnostics I know. I was a very sheltered kid. TLDR, christanity is woven into my life. I've been offered a lead position for that same camp for next year (and they require you to be a christian) and going into my senior year, my competative debate program which I've been in since freshman year is also heavily christian. So is my entire family. So are all my friends. I'm going to colege next year so I was wondering if I should just wait it out until then. What do ya'll think?

Trigger Warning The most bizzare testimony I've ever heard- Spoiler

I'm putting trigger warning because this genuinely pissed me off-

I think this guy was entirely serious as he was talking, and he was entirely calm too.

This was his reason for turning to Christ-

"I once heard a sermon of a pastor talking about hell.

And how it was fire and stuff.

So then one day I was cooking, and I noticed that the stove had flames coming out of it.

And I wanted to know what hell would feel like.

So I touched the flames.

It was very hot.

Then later I was in the bathroom.

And I thought if I would want to be in hell.

And I decided- "No. I don't think I want to go there."

So I gave my life to Christ."

10/10 testimony.

Politics-Required on political posts I’m FURIOUS about the past 2,000 years of history

I had a moment of clarity while reading a post on a Christian forum, where a guy was talking about how grateful he was for the gift of salvation in Jesus. I suddenly realized that despite all the years spent praying to Jesus, I’ve never felt that way!

Instead, what I feel is mostly resentment. I’m angry at the subjugation of women and gays. I’m angry at the imperialism, the genocides, and the destruction of indigenous cultures. I’m angry that this is the religion we’re all stuck with—because it was the biggest bully in the neighborhood and got rid of all the others.

And it’s not even a compelling religion. Its entire premise is that the universe revolves around one man’s messianic ambitions—as if I can’t turn on the TV at any time and see plenty of self-absorbed men who think all of humanity ought to worship them and accommodate itself to their political projects. I’m so, so, so tired of it. NO KINGS!
