New Rule: Selling

Hello,

Adding a new rule to the subreddit about selling. We haven't had many issues here, but scamming is becoming more and more of an issue on reddit in general so we're doing a preemptive strike. Euphoniums and related gear are expensive and a scam could cost you a lot.

If you list something for sale on this subreddit, your post must include a clear image of the item(s) you're selling, a paper note in the image showing your Reddit username + the date, and the price clearly stated (or an ask for a best offer). If you are linking to an external website (your eBay listing, for example), just prove somehow that it is your listing (an image as described above that is clearly the same item, for example).

We'll be removing posts that don't follow this rule starting now. Sharing deals doesn't relate to this rule (look at this cheap Yamaha from Japan, for example), but if it is found that you are sharing your own deal, you risk being banned from the subreddit.

Please be weary of scammers. The mod team is not responsible if you fall for a scam.

6th graders...🙄

As I was walking into band, the 6th graders addressed my euphonium as a bass trombone.

They thought they were just being silly, but they didn't realize that a bass trombone is a real thing...

Just started playing Euphonium for school band, I have some questions

  1. can someone explain what the range of Euphonium is? everywhere it seems the range is written differently
  2. I STILL don’t understand where to use Slide Grease on it
  3. do I clean it every time after I use it?
  4. I have to carry it up and down stairs, any recommendations to make that part easier?
  5. does anyone have a way to silence it because everywhere i go (and play it) someone acts like they’re allergic to it. also im kinda broke so I can’t buy a practice mute

gurgling sound in middle register

new euphonium player here, started playing on concert baritone 4 months ago, slowly transitioned to a marching euphonium

didnt play euph for a couple weeks cuz of a vacation, took a week to regain most of the skills i had prior to vacation but now theres a gurgling sound in my middle register (C to E ish on bass clef )

i thought it was water, but it usually doesnt go away after emptying my spit valves and is still there after emptying them thoroughly. also thought it was cuz of my embouchure so i firm up my corners and it works sometimes but most of the times it didnt work

Advice on new to me YEP-321

I just bought a used brass YEP-321 that appearance wise is in somewhat rough shape. The valves and slides all work well and I was able to take all but one bottom cap apart on the valves pretty easily. The finish is worn off in some areas and there are plenty of scratches and small dents. It was a school instrument before the previous owner. I only paid $600, and I'm sorry if any of you were the next 2 people in line! I'm planning on sending it to a repair shop to be checked out and cleaned.

I remember reading a discussion on valve springs a while back and I wanted to know if I should just get standard Yamaha springs or if there's something better.

I'm also considering new mouthpieces. I don't know what mouthpiece I had on my first horn (1993ish Yamaha marching baritone) but they currently come with a BH-48L. My second horn is an older version of the Jupiter 705 with Jupiter 10SB mouthpiece. It's what I'm currently used to. I'm not crazy about it but I don't have specific reasons I can put into words but I never felt that way with my marching mouthpiece. My new horn came with a slightly damaged 6 1/2 AL (a small chip on the outer edge of the rim and the bottom of the shank is slightly out of round.) It looks likes all 3 have .571"/14.5mm shanks.

Unless it's a bad idea due to the damage, I'll probably use the 6 1/2 AL initially. I haven't had a chance to play it because I've either been traveling or sick!

If anyone else has advice on something I didn't mention please let me know! I do know what shop I'm planning on going to; I talked to an experienced band director I know and he was very happy with them. I'm in New England and willing to travel if anyone has a favorite shop.

Thinking of buying a new mouthpiece for marching band

I currently use a Denis Wick SM4U on my concert euphonium, while I use a smaller RT-6C for marching band I have been considering buying a Denis Wick Heavyweight 4AL for marching band to make the mouthpieces feel more comfortable for switching between marching band and concert band.

I would also like to note that the reason I don’t use the SM4U for marching band is because it feels overly restrictive on my marching horn.

FYI, I'm a trumpeter that has started doubling on eupho and Bass trumpet(weird combo, but the band I'm in had a bass trumpet so I learnt that first). I don't currently have a lower brass teacher, so my embouchure is very similar to my trumpet embouchure, just looser.

Music PDF’s

Hi all!

I’m moving into the 21st century and getting a tablet for sheet music. I was wondering if anyone has a collection of PDF’s of Euphonium parts, solos, etudes etc that they could share to give me a head start?

I’m not asking for any copyrighted material, but just help to save time trawling through places like IMSPL?

Thanks :)

Finger pain while playing marching baritone?

Hi, new to Reddit. I’m a trombone player and recently switched to baritone for marching band. I’ve been holding it in what I gather is the correct way? Left hand fingers around the valves, thumb in the ring, etc. Most of the weight sits on the top of my left hand, specifically the left index finger. It puts a lot of strain on that finger and causes pain in the knuckle/joints. I’m wondering if this is normal or I’m holding it wrong?

Help me, please

I have 2 issues currently

  1. I am skipping ahead in school band and am panicking because I have this summer to be at about done with the standard of excellence blue book. Tips on what to focus on in practice would be greatly appreciated.

  2. My first valve is sticking before it comes up fully. I've oiled it, I've wiped it down and reoiled it, I can't seem to get it working. Does anyone know what this might be or should I just take it to a shop?

Which practice mute should I get?

Hello,

I have a old Weltklang 4 rotary valve "oval" European baritone and I want to buy a practice mute so that I can play at home without bothering anyone too much.

I wanted to buy it of Thoman.de but I am not sure which mute would fit the baritone.

A couple of mutes I looked at all had reviews of people trying to use it on their Eb alto horns, but that isn't really a reliable reference for my baritone.

Does anyone have any relevant experience with baritone mutes, if not with the ones that can be purchased at Thoman then maybe any bartone mutes in general.

The Immutable 321

I watch eBay for all the euphonium action in my budget.

The stuff from India sits forever, both unwanted and silly cheap. Why doesn't India export great instruments ?

A decent Amz-JinBao factory brand unit comes and quickly goes in the sub $600 bandwidth. Mendini and Cecillio labels have been replaced with ROWELL, fwiw.

The one that always appears in searches. Gets sold and resold weekly in America. Truly the Olds Cutlass / Toyota Camry euphonium of the American music psyche: the non-compensating Yamaha YEP-321.

And this is not merely respect. It is obsession. It is ridiculousness.

Any 321 obviously just dreged from the city river will fetch $500 sleeping, 97% seller.

A good used 321 starting at an Earth level bid stops the heart. Oh, sorry, within 24 hours of conclusion, it is well over $1,000 after shipping.

Mint or FINE+ and it becomes cost wise questionable to me:

why not be looking at NEW fully compensating Jin Bao horns -- or even a JP 274 ?

In my experience, the build quality on top JP models is fantastic. Clearly above JinBao and as good as good vintage American gear.

IS THE AMERICAN MARKET FEALTY TO THE YEP-321 BECOMING SILLY ?

DOES A YEP-321 SOUND BETTER THAN ALL OF THE JIN BAO OR JP MODELS ?

Was a time that Made in Japan was the mark of cheap and disposable. Is there a current xenophobia against Made in China ?

Where can I get a trigger installed on a compensating euphonium?

Hi, I'm going to purchase a used Yamaha 842, and it doesn't have the main tuning slide trigger. I was wondering if any luthier / shop in Portugal can install a trigger for me, or if I can send it to Yamaha for them to do it? Thank you.
