Ask El Paso Designated entry point from El Paso

Hello everyone. My dad is Mexican and I grew up always wanting to check out the country myself because of stuff he used to tell me about. My birthday is coming up and I recently got my passport but haven't used it yet so I'm kind of ignorant when it comes to traveling. I'm planning to go to El Paso in September and enter one of the designated entry points to cross the border. Is this a good course of action if I'm working with a limited budget or should I do things differently?

Ask El Paso Is the Grand China Buffet still open?

Hey everyone, years ago I was stationed at Ft Bliss and there was a restaurant called The Grand China Buffet. I am traveling through El Paso in a few weeks and I was wondering if it's still open. Google says it is, but people I know that have been there recently said that it's closed permanently. Can anyone tell me if it's still open or closed or if they moved from their location on Viscount?

Ask El Paso Custom costumes in the city?

I'm getting a headstart on Halloween and looking to purchase or have made a set of dragon/demon wings. I know I could probably find something like this online but if I could purchase from someone in town I'd prefer it.

Bluebonnet Curriculum is widely used in our area because the state gives districts additional funds if they adopt it.

Texas will spend more than $8 million in taxpayer funds to correct thousands of errors in the state-published Bluebonnet school curriculum, according to a contract obtained by a local news outlet from State Board of Education Vice Chair Pam Little.

The expense covers reprints, shipping, and disposal of outdated materials tied to text mistakes, grammatical problems, and image licensing issues.

I'm looking to get some maintenance on a bike I just received. It has hydraulic brakes that need to be redone and the shops around hear seem a bit expensive.

Discussion You have a legal right to opt your kids out of the new SBOE Bible curriculum

Post image
666 Upvotes

Hey everyone, just wanted to share an important legal update for El Paso parents regarding the recent Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) curriculum changes.

In case you missed it, the SBOE voted to mandate a new K-12 reading curriculum (set for 2030) that weaves Bible stories and verses directly into standard English and literature classes. While the state is framing this as "historical and cultural literacy," it has raised a lot of questions for families who want control over their kids' religious education, or simply do not want religion taught in public schools.

Here is the important part: Thanks to a recent 6-3 U.S. Supreme Court ruling (Mahmoud v. Taylor), you have a bulletproof, federal First Amendment right to opt your children out of these lessons.

Why this matters for El Paso area families:

  • It is a federal right: Under this SCOTUS precedent, public schools must give you advanced notice and allow you to pull your child from any lesson that conflicts with your family's religious upbringing.
  • Schools must provide alternatives: Because these Bible readings are woven into regular English classes (not an elective course), EPISD, YISD, and SISD will be legally required to provide alternative, non-religious assignments for your kids during those class periods.
  • It protects everyone: Whether you are Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, secular, or anything else, this ruling means you decide how and when your child is exposed to religious texts—not the state board in Austin.

Keep an eye out for how our local El Paso school districts handle the rollout and notice policies over the next couple of years. You have the final say!
You do not have to put up with Christian Nationalist propaganda in your child's public school.

Keep religion in church where it belongs.

Discussion We Are Witnessing the Beginning of the End of Public School Education in Texas

"For most of my life, Republicans and Democrats alike understood that public education wasn’t simply another government program. It was one of the state’s most important responsibilities. Governors disagreed over funding, accountability, curriculum, testing, local control, and standards. But there was broad agreement that strong schools were essential to a strong Texas.

Dolph Briscoe invested heavily in public education and teacher pay. Mark White made education reform the centerpiece of his administration and signed House Bill 72, which brought teacher raises, smaller elementary class sizes, and many Texans will remember the famous “No Pass, No Play” rule. Ann Richards wrestled with school-finance equity through what became known as Robin Hood."

Hello!
Im 37F currently working a 9:00-5:00 job and with prices getting so high I need to make the most of my time.
I’m looking for a nighttime weekend job, I have been with my company for over 10 years so my skills are super rusty.
