A few years ago, I purchased two 100% cotton jersey tie-dye dresses from harempants.com. Really colorful (yellow/orange/pink/purple) on black. They were great and I loved them. I finally had a chance to wear one and washed it with cold water in washing machine. The dye/colors bled like stink! And now one of the dresses has super faded color where the yellow/pink were (interestingly the black did not fade/bleed). I have another dress that that has really vibrant colors that I want to preserve, and was wondering if anyone has some advice about fixing/locking the color in? I read a bit about vinegar and salt fixative? Or soda ash fixative? Does anyone have experience fixing color on purchased tie-dye garments that they would be willing to share? I appreciate the help!

We have a ...very enthusiastic passion fruit vine in our backyard, though it's now past its peak. (This year, I've got 80 to process. Last year it was over 150!) We freeze them so they don't go off before they can get used which means the purple in the skins comes off on my hands as I'm working through them. It made me wonder how well they'd work as a natural dye.

For some reason, passion fruits aren't normally in natural dyeing books, but my uneducated assumption is that it's probably due to cost (they're usually A$1.50 each here in Australia when they're in season) and ease of access (they're tropical imports most places). So I was going at this completely blind, having only done one tiny kool-aid dye experiment a decade ago with wool yarn.

The answer is pretty well! I "cowboy dyed" (no known weights of anything, and I *think* I might've added some vinegar or citric acid as a fixative, but no mordant besides that) this silk with about half of last year's crop and WOW. It turned out beautifully. So when I prepped the last portion of last year's harvest, I chopped up the skins into smaller bits and dried them out and now I've got a jarful of them. I'm not sure if I'll still get good color out of them since they look to have faded quite a bit, but I'm hoping I will.

I'm posting about this mostly to procrastinate dealing with this year's harvest, but also because I'd love some tips on how to best save this color. They're currently staining a tea towel as they defrost 😂

i got this pair of jeans at the thrift but i really don’t like this color since i wear mostly only black clothing, but i really love the fit of these, i think the lace up at the front may be synthetic? don’t know but i want it ALL black, i've dyed other stuff with rit but its a mess honestly so i want other recommendations of products and techniques on how to properly dye.

I have grey muddy mat rugs and all my decor and furniture are brown, beige. They clash horribly and I want to dye them brown. I've heard that the polyester in the rugs don't like to take the dye. Has anyone ever done this before with any success? First time posting. Hopefully I'm doing this correctly.

If I dye a cotton dress with a bleach stain, will it all turn out the same color or will the bleached area be a different color?

i'd like to dye this 100% cotton vintage jacket black using dylon. however, i noticed on the packet that it says the dye may be corrosive to metal. does anyone have any experience with this? would it ruin my jacket?

in order of the photos, the 1st one is what i have, 2nd is what im trying to go for. 3rd picture and both shades in picture 4 is what im trying to avoid.

i don't wanna spend money on new jeans and i already have some that are in good shape. some are just a color i don't really like, or fading in color and starting to look way too blue for me. im pretty sure the fabric composition for them all is 100% cotton. i have jeans similar to the first one's color, but i'd like a more dark wash like the second one.

i've seen people use the rit back to blue dye kit to make their jeans darker, but i really don't like how the aftermath turns out because it tends to look VERY oversaturated and a little too blue and purpley for my liking, similar to picture #3 and 4. also, the denim generally looks almost like a completely different fabric with how solid the dye is.

however, i do like how dark people can get their jeans to be using the kit!! i've also seen uses of tan or orange dye for a vintage wash tint, and i think that will help combat the purpleness of what ive seen.

i was thinking of dyeing my jeans using the kit, and mixing in a small bit of orange to get the vintage-ish tint and help reduce the purple and make the color more muted.

i've never dyed denim before though, so im not sure if this will work or if there's any other better solutions to this! thank you for your help, any suggestions or answers are much appreciated

I need to dye this white coverall this color grey. It is 65% Polyester, 35% Cotton. Given the blend, will it dye well and evenly? I have access to Procion dyes. Any tips or tricks?

I’ve never dyed anything before but I have this (100% cotton) tank top that I absolutely love but the color looks absolutely terrible on me. The first color image is more true to what the color looks like, and the second is the color I would like to achieve. Would it be possible to get this kind of fuchsia/pink, or will the yellow make it more orange?

I’m also open to other color suggestions! I wouldn’t mind a light green, or if I could make the yellow a bit more warm toned without making it too dark. Any help is appreciated!

I’ve never done any dying to my clothes. I’m trying to put a concert outfit together. I found the perfect top and perfect skirt, the problem is the top is white and black, the skirt is cream and brown. I want to get the white shirt to have more of a cream hue. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just not so obviously different. But I don’t want to ruin the black spots either. I’m thinking if I just did a fabric dye in an Ecru color and dipped the whole shirt, it would make the white > cream colored and the black > brown? But I don’t want to mess this up and don’t have anything similar with spots like that in which I can experiment. Any help or advice is much appreciated! Photos for reference.

I have this blouse that I’d like to dye black. It’s 100% cotton but has quite a bit of lace insert and trim. Worried that the fabrics could wind up being different colors (ie, black and grey). I’ve only used rit dye in the past, but open to other brands that would be better suited to this top. Thanks in advance for your advice

Tag on second slide. I'm a cosplayer and I bought this coat secondhand online; it photographed very dark and I didn't realize it was dark blue. I will be modifying and partially resewing it to fit the costume, but the color is very very close to being a dealbreaker. Is there a way to safely neutralize the blue without ruining the wool? I am okay if it's the same lightness, but grey; it just can't have the blue tone happening. Did my best to have the color show up accurately in the photo, but the details are more greenish irl.

TL;DR: any way to make it greyscale instead of blue?

I dyed some cotton pjs with Rit dark green and they came out very blue/turquoise. I want them to be less blue and closer to true green. How can I fix this? I did use the rit fixative to keep the color in, will that affect my ability to change the color? Any help would be appreciated!

I’m looking to make this cloak and would love to make it out of wool. I’ve found a few very lovely 100% wool coatings that could work but i’m just not sure how to go about ombré dyeing it. I have experience dyeing various fabrics but not wool.

My main concerns are getting the dye to the curve of the cloak pattern (likely 3/4 to full circle skirt) without pre cutting the fabric because of shrinkage, and the sheer amount of fabric I would be trying to dye.

I wonder if it would be possible to paint or airbrush the dye and then heat set it with steam to avoid trying to wrangle 6m of fabric into one pot?

Any advice or recommendations for acid/protein dyes would be appreciated :)

hi, as my title states i want to dye a polycotton blend hoodie. the reason i hesitate is because the website doesn't directly list what % of each it is. the hoodie is a butter yellow "hand milled" whatever that means, piece. the lining is teal. i want to dye it a neutral color so ill wear it more but genuinely curious my odds of ruining it.

I dont have specific color goals other than neutral, that could be black, grey, ideally not brown.

Hi, I have this Alexander McQueen scarf, 100% Lana wool.
Was hoping to dying it a darker colour, something more neutral. Thinking chocolate brown, black or navy.
I am nervous that it would be a waster, and that the pattern wouldn’t show up at all.

I have just bought a white, pure cotton dress. It also comes in a stunning and very particular red which I can't afford as it's not in the sale. I've attached a pic! Can anyone suggest a dye that can achieve this? It isn't burgundy or orange or pinkish. It's almost...poppy?

EDIT: there is some confusion between listings of the dress as to whether it is 100% cotton (as stated on the site I bought it from) or 89% cotton 11% polyamide (as stated on other sites and for the dress in red). I will check the label when it arrives. I suspect it will prove to be a blend. Many thanks to the poster who caught this.

Im trying to get my sweatpants match my top, they’re both grey but my sweatpants are lighter in terms of color than my top. Which Rit dye should i get for my sweatpants (the light grey fabric) to be the exact same color as my top? (the dark grey fabric)

If i re-dye clothes that came out patchy the first time, will they just come out still patchy but just darker? or if i do it right, will they come out solid-toned? does that make sense

I bought this possibly vintage Finnish dress over a decade ago, and while I love it, it has hung mostly unworn this whole time. The pale pink color is very close my skin color and it washes me out a bit. I tend to look better in more saturated colors, so was considering dyeing it, but I’ve never tried dyeing before.

Would this dress be a good candidate to dye? What color could overlay the existing pink? I’ve read that the dye won’t stick to the print, which I’m hoping to preserve. Any recommendations appreciated!
