I havent failed this badly in a long time... my saturation is so bad, makes me want to quit.

So here’s my firsts for HWI. Had a lot of fun learning the basics and now time to learn how to fine tune this side of the art!

I’m digging it the color is scraptacular by grateful dyes, just gotta work on my ties a bit more

Added some flair to this black dress. Reverse with OWB, DUI Dharma Magenta, Tangerine, Deep Yellow, Dark Green, Mermaid’s Dream, and Ultra Violet.

I have done both of these rolls a lot of times but the experiment was to blindly reach in my dye box and grab random dyes to sprinkle on.

normally I like to plan my colors and their placement so I can achieve some sort of expected result and ensure that I don’t end up with a puddle of mud.

Colors used:
1st shirt was Electric Blue, Alchemist, and Fire Sphene.
2nd shirt was Lemon Yellow and Elysian.

Perhaps a silly question but I'm a sahp and often start dyes at night when I'm off duty. As such, I can't get fresh ice on until morning and I wonder if that is impacting their flow. I like very splitty, flowy dyes and am often getting less flow with high, dark concentration in some areas and basically nothing in others even after reapplying ice. I can't tell if it's only not enough ice volume, or if my timing is impacting things.

Perhaps I could restate the question as: how quickly must you replenish ice to maintain dye penetration after it melts?

If it helps, I live in MN with extremely variable ambient heat.

First one is an experiment for me to see results of tying sinew on the top and bottom roll sections of a typical COA roll.

Second one is one of my typical rolls.

Both are DOI on incline.

Colors on both are Electric Blue, Kaleidoscope Eyes, and Avalon.

Shirt from several months ago I forgot I made

I’ve seen floss dyers use Q-Snap frames, I just need to keep one of my frames out of use to use for dyeing. Any other ideas? I’ve been taking the plastic sleeves off of skeins and soda ash soaking in a yogurt container, which is where the tangling starts. As I’m writing this I realize a larger soaking container that’ll fit my small Q-Snap is the obvious solution, but I’d still like other ideas so I can bang out multiple colors simultaneously ideally.

I did this last night and am wanting to do a second round on top of it. Does resoaking and applying a second layer of dye alter the first at all? It’s a cotton/polyester sheet. I am not wanting to do an entire cover of dye - more wanting to add on a design on top - like a peace sign or something like that. It’s hopefully going to be a photo back drop for an event. Thanks for any advice!!

It’s still damp but I’m pretty happy with the splits after quite a bit of saturation issues relearning ice dye.

Hello everyone! Beginner dyer here.

I've been having a bit of a problem, particularly with big and tall shirts, when I soak them in soda ash and spin them out, they're resisting my twists when I make spirals, which undoes my pleats. They're also leaving an enormous smear of soda ash residue on my table to clean up as well! What I wanted to know is, have any of you tried tying the shirts and banding them FIRST, THEN putting the whole package is in the soda ash water to soak?

Nobody ever says to do that so I'm assuming there's a good reason why, but I figured I'd ask around and see what experienced folks know about it.

Little canvas bags for gifts. I mixed the dye and froze it in silicone muffin cups. I scrunched and shoved the bags into the bucket, sprinkled with soda ash, covered with about an inch of crushed ice, placed my dye cups (took a picture) added another inch of crushed ice and let it sit for 2 days. This group gives me so many ideas.

From 2019. Im still trying to figure out how i folded/tied the purple/teal one, lol :)

I’ve had this idea for a while since I had plenty of green and yellow tie dye leftover. I’m overall pleased with the results.

One of my favorite things to do is to show my friends and family how to ice dye! I'm a teacher so I know for a large group of inexperienced people, organization is key (also I just find stuff like this fun to make).

I made two slideshows to help me host events. Maybe y'all can find some inspiration from this!

1) Tie Dye with Ice. The basics of ice dying that I send out before people arrive. I tried to make it simple and emphasize there is no wrong way to do it as many people are nervous to do crafts, especially as they have been telling themselves for years they are bad at arts and crafts. The beauty of tie dye is that every piece is unique and therefore perfect in its own way! I present this beforehand and have a binder with the instructions in it. If it's a large group I'll print it on the table where I put the supplies.

2) Ice Dyes Colors. This is a digital catalog of all the colors I have. I used images from the Dharma website. I send the link out so people can navigate on their own. I also find this handy because if something runs out I can add a comment saying "run out, re-order next time".

Please note there may be some mistakes in links but hopefully only a small amount.

Picture for attention: Some pants from Costco I wear teaching! Originally Ecru but didn't have shirts that matched it well. I believe it was 100% alchemist over that.
