Question Where can I learn bassline composition?

I've got the drums down as far as making DNB (mainly jungle, Neuro, & jump up). I've learned to chop and layer samples. But now I want to learn the next steps. I think this is the basslines? Idk maybe I'm wrong. Are there any creators I can look to for help?

Discussion DANGEROUS | 172 BPM | DNB ROLLER | Made on the OP-XY ⚠️ | Sketch #6

Forgive me for a few things.

  1. Yes i did use AI to make this thumbnail. this seemed to really upset someother people in a Dubstep forum, (different track) so I am putting it out there now.
  2. If it helps the artists, the art underneath my Daw-less device was actually hand painted by me. So don't hate.
  3. This track was made Daw-less without any screens or software - just pure sequencing power.
  4. Art is within the eye of the beholder.

Hope you enjoy the track :)

Discussion omfg style abandoned melodic dnb wip! any opinions whether i should continue working on it?

hey guys so i havent been producing actively for quite a long time. currently im looking through some of my old abandoned wips and i found this track that I quit midway. it's basically a combination of euphoric hardstyle + 2010s youtube intro music + [IVY] + Ekko & Sidetrack if you get what i mean. it's still in its very early stages, so mixing, mastering, arrangement, etc arent there yet, but i feel like maybe theres some potential to revive this track if anyone likes the idea at all.

so yea, question is, does anyone think theres some potential to possibly continue working on this abandoned wip?

Hi everyone, at 1:31 there's this rising resonant ping-pongish sound I've encountered in many breakbeat tracks, what is it called?

Question Spectrogram plugins

Q: what spectrogram plugins did you try and what's your favorite one? Do you find them helpful?

From what I read and watched it seems like spectrograms are one of the best visual tools to glue kick and bass. So I'm considering getting one.
I found a few plugins online. The iZotopes RX is too expensive for me, Melda's MMultiAnalyzer is okayish.

Feedback request First draft. Beginner trying to make atmospheric breakcore/jungle/DnB, looking for any feedback

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my first ever decent track draft, so I’m still learning and I honestly don’t really know what I’m doing yet.

I know the intro might be a bit cheesy or cliché, but I actually like that kind of atmosphere, so I wanted to experiment with it.

The main problem is that I don’t really know where to take the track from here. I’m not sure how to continue it, expand the idea, improve the arrangement, or make it feel like a complete song instead of just a short draft.

I also don’t really know how to classify it. I was aiming for something inspired by artists like Sewerslvt and similar atmospheric breakbeat/DnB/jungle styles, but I’m a complete beginner and I don’t know if this would technically be considered breakcore, drum and bass, jungle, breakbeat or something else.

I’d appreciate any kind of help or feedback: composition, drums, bass, sound design, mixing, structure, or just general impressions.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to listen.

Discussion Berydynamic Headphone Lab

I have a pair of monitor speakers, but probably use headphones something like 90% of the time (be kind to the neighbours...). So most of the time im using a pair of Beyerdynamic 900 Pro X. I got them a couple of years ago and really like them, comfy and sound great either for me when im in Ableton or listening to pro made music.... but, I have noticed things sound wildly different on these headphones vs monitors, and even more so bluetooth speaker, other headphones (and obv phone speakers). My approach so far has been make a track sound as good as I can on my headphones, then check on monitors/soundbar and tweak.

So I recently downloaded the free Headphone Lab plugin but im a bit confused about how to use it to get better at mix/mastering. I put in the serial number and now I can turn on 'headphone calibration for neutral sound', which flattens the frequency diagram, but the initial impact is it just makes my track sound a lot worse 😂 Anyway, the confusion for me right now is, why do I want to mix perfectly neutral when only production nerds really listens on neutral - so dont we want to mix for some kind of best possible average of AirPods, smart speakers, cars etc? Then I guess if you're pro and playing music on big systems you have a mix and master for that? Is that where 'neutral' is desirable? How do you all approach this to give your ears a fighting chance of pulling off a good mix?!

If anyone's got a few minutes I'd really appreciate some feedback. It's only the second track I've made so I'm still figuring everything out haha.

I feel like the middle gets a bit confusing, but I'm wondering if I might actually be onto something here? Any feedback at all would be massively appreciated.

Cheers

Discussion The best feedback I can give... is to diagram other tunes!

This part is universal:

You should spend some time "diagramming" the arrangements of other dnb tunes. E.g. it's usually 8 bars intro, 7 bars build, 1 bar turn around, HEN the drop. (or if you produce at 174, 16 bars intro, 14 bars build, 2 bar turnaround before your 30 bar drop, with a 2 bar turn around, then a drop escalation, then the drop cool down, then a break, then a build, then a drop... it's all ~16 bars, innit, but you know, 2 of those bars is the turn around)

This was also my answer to the "how do you never have writers block" on one of the subs the other day. I didn't post it, but, it's how I never have writers block. I either use my current reference track, or I go find a good reference track and start breaking it down, then comparing my track to the track I'm breaking down... you go reverse engineer a track, you basically have a paint by numbers where you just fill in your own sounds...

Your drop kinda comes in in the middle of a bar. GRab your fav tune, pull it into ableton, then draw an empty midi clip where the intro is, draw a midi clip where the build, the turn around, the drop, the break, the build, the 2nd drop, etc. Level 2 is to start drawing out where you hear the kick, where you hear the snare, etc...

ok... this feeds into the first bit. This was written specifically about one person who was asking for feedback... but seriously, do you know how often this is accurate? I DJ at 87 because I know that every 8 bars there's a turnaround and I can always be safe making 1/2/4/8/16/32 beat loops... (32 used to be the max, which is 8 bars, but that's really 16 bars of 174 at 87... which is generally a phrase...)

SO if your "drop" comes in in the middle of a bar, like... that confuses people and makes djing hard. People think in sets. I'm all for breaking the rules, once you know the rules... but... I mean Aphridite is the king of long ass intros, but even then the drop is some multiple of 8 (again, when counted at 87BPM). usually like 32 bars.... (which would be 31 bars on a CDJ).

TL;DR: The best thing you can do is reverse engineer your fav song(s) in the daw. Drag it into the song into your daw, set the tempo, then start drawing out empty midi clips, where do you hear the kick? Draw an empty midi clip.

create a new midi channel, where do you hear the snare, draw an empty midi clip there.

where do you hear the...??? Whatever... draw an empty midi clip for EVERYTHING you hear on a new channel. Then when you're done, you have a paint by numbers to make your own song.

SO WHAT! If you copied the exact structure. You put in your own samples, your own riffs, your own sounds... it's not the same song even if you "painted by numbers" by filling in all of the empty midi clips with your own sounds.

Do you want to see me do it live? I can direct you to recordings of me diagramming tracks.

Feedback request [Drum and Bass] There might be no Tomorrow

Thumbnail youtube.com
0 Upvotes

I wanted to explore what a modern protest song could sound like if it leaned more toward cinematic drum & bass instead of folk or rock.

THERE MIGHT BE NO TOMORROW is about solidarity, resilience and the idea that change starts when ordinary people stop standing alone.

Curious what you think about the production, lyrics and overall atmosphere.

Feedback request Feedback wanted on my DnB Track

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a new DnB track. It’s still a demo and hasn’t been properly mixed or mastered yet.

I’m happy with the structure and sound selection so far, but I feel like the mix sounds a little harsh in places. Honest criticism is very welcome, especially regarding the mix, arrangement, transitions and overall energy.

What do you think ?
