While all 3 mods were tragic but beautiful in their own way, I feel like Exit Music Redux tricked me the most. Despite never playing it and knowing it has a reputation as a staple of the modding community and has also been labeled as sad, I should have known better than to expect a happy ending, but it still played me for a fool anyway, lmao.
I think it's because with Within and Fallen Angel, you know that Monika and Yuri were still in the vicinity of the things that were dangerous to them, such as Monika's abusive father and Yuri's knife collection. But with Exit Music, I let my guard down when Natsuki's dad got arrested. When it got to the ending, I was not prepared to see Natsuki like that; it made me tear up, alongside MC not getting the help he needed and officially reaching his breaking point. Just heartbreaking stuff all around. I'm a fool for thinking that MC going to the police was going to fix her mental health, when in reality it was only going to make her relive her trauma.
I really loved how the devs animated the sprites through movement to convey expression. While this is only my 6th mod, and the original game and the mods I've played kind of did that, they didn't do it to the extent this mod did, and I thought it was really creative. I also loved how immersive every scene felt with the weather and visuals too.
The only problems I had with this mod are the club treating Monika like she was Satan for coddling Sayori too much. I thought it was kind of ridiculous; I get it, but damn, it just felt cruel how they acted toward her. The pacing dragged on at certain times too, but that's about it.
All in all, I don't regret going on this depression spree of mods. They're all heartbreaking, but people were right to say these are must-plays and to put them in high regard. They all deserved their reputations, they all built up the relationships with each character and made them so heartwarming and romantic , but that's what adds on to the tragedy of it all. If you're still kind of new much like me to DDLC mods, I definitely recommend playing these.
Oh yeah, how could I forget the soundtracks for these? All incredible soundtracks, all memorable. The songs in these three made every moment of their respective stories better. Blue Skies for me though is still number one regarding soundtracks I've heard so far, it's just so peak, but these are definitely S-tier and in my top four still, though to be fair I haven't played many mods so far, so maybe that'll change as I play more.
With all of that being said, I am definitely taking a week break from sad mods for real this time, lmao. For a mod to even be truly sad, it has to have multiple endings at the minimum. These mods definitely took fragments of my soul.
