Discussion Does it take less computational power for the playback to do a shot in Fusion?

Upvotes

The other day I saw someone say "With this many tracks you'd be better off doing it in Fusion" in reply to someone who had like 15 tracks for one shot, and I was curious if that is actually better or if it's just a personal preference thing. Because I was lead to believe that Fusion takes more juice to run than the regular editing timeline, so I've been doing it like this the whole time unless I actually need fusion effects.

Like right now I'm gonna do three layered shots on top of each other and just use the crop tool for it, but would it actually be less ressource intensive if I made it a fusion comp with 3 masks...

Help Would you return an M4 Pro MacBook for an M5 Pro with the same RAM/GPU for about $100 more?

I just bought a 14-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro with:

  • 14-core CPU
  • 20-core GPU
  • 48GB unified memory
  • 2TB SSD
  • nano-texture display

I bought it primarily for DaVinci Resolve Studio, particularly Fusion compositions, Film Look Creator, Relight, AI Speed Warp and other GPU/AI-heavy effects.

I’ve since found an Apple Certified Refurbished 14-inch M5 Pro with:

  • 18-core CPU
  • 20-core next-generation GPU
  • 48GB unified memory
  • 2TB SSD
  • nano-texture display

After accounting for the different AppleCare payment options, it would cost me roughly $100–$200 more to return the M4 Pro and get the M5 Pro.

I understand that effects like Speed Warp and Relight aren’t necessarily expected to play in real time on either machine, and that caching is part of a normal Resolve workflow. However, the M5 Pro has higher memory bandwidth and Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, which sounds potentially relevant for Resolve’s increasing use of AI effects—and possibly more future-proof as Blackmagic optimizes for it.

Would you exchange the M4 Pro for the M5 Pro at this small a price difference? Has anyone directly compared these chips in Resolve, particularly for AI effects, Fusion, cache generation or rendering? I’m less interested in basic export tests and more interested in demanding real-world timelines.

Edit for clarification: The roughly $100 difference isn’t a completely apples-to-apples hardware comparison. My M4 Pro purchase included three years of prepaid AppleCare+, whereas the displayed M5 Pro total doesn’t include AppleCare.

The refurbished M5 only gives me monthly or annual AppleCare options, so I would add the $149.99/year plan separately to soften the upfront cost. That makes the M5 approximately $268 more initially once the first AppleCare payment is included, and roughly $600 more over three years of equivalent coverage.

So the real question is whether the newer CPU, GPU architecture and per-core Neural Accelerators are worth approximately $600 more over three years for Resolve/Fusion and AI-heavy effects.

Final update: I did it.

I was wrong in my earlier edit about AppleCare. The M4 price did not include three years of AppleCare. The $5,262.88 charge was simply the $4,699 computer plus BC tax. Neither machine included AppleCare, so this really was an apples-to-apples comparison.

The M5 Pro was $4,779, making the actual difference just $80 before tax, or $89.60 after tax. Same 48GB RAM, 2TB SSD, 20-core GPU and nano-texture display, but with the newer GPU architecture, Neural Accelerators, higher memory bandwidth and four additional CPU cores.

So yeah, I ordered the M5 Pro. At a genuine difference of less than $100, there was really no argument for keeping the M4.

Help What can I do to make this mask more realistic?

Upvotes

Not new in Davinci but new with masking. (I have the Studio version)

Made this using the AI magic mask panel, but I can't pinpoint what's wrong with the image.

It the color? Is it the edges of the mask?

Help | Beginner Help with fixing horizon tilt

Upvotes

I'm using DaVinci Resolve 20. I shot a long video in MP4 HEVC 1080p 30fps format and I need to automatically fix the horizon tilt: the scene is slightly titled in both directions (left and right) at different points in time but many times it's straight.

Is there a way to automatically detect the rotation angle for each frame and straighten it? There are at least 2 visible horizontal objects (edges of a concert scene) visible through the whole video, so these could be tracked. Thanks.

The working PC:

CPU: Intel Pentium G4560

RAM: 8GB DDR4

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti

GPU RAM: 2GB

Mod Post July/Aug Feedback (on your edit) thread

This is the Monthly thread for feedback.

We're adopting this from r/videoediting.

If you post your video, you need to come back and review AT LEAST one other person's work!

Key thoughts - Keep it civil.

  • Feedback is "This section isn't working because of this."
  • Feedback is not: "This is shit."
  • If something is terrible, just move on.
  • The more specific/suggestions the better.

Don't give a laundry list. Pick the 1-2 things that are the biggest issues and then comment.

Spoiler worth reading: *we expect you to* review TWO other videos - and edit your comment to *include those* after you've commented.

**Copy/paste this section**:

  • Link: (don't forget the running time)
  • Two other videos I reviewed (link to the other, comments NOT the video itself)

Discussion How does Blackmagic design Resolve for non-professional enthusiasts?

Hi! I don't know how this post will be considered from a moderation or community standpoint, but I have a question about how Black Magic focuses its software engineering efforts for Studio. I'm curious about how the software engineers responsible for it all perceive enthusiast, non-professional users. My instant thought is "they don't" lol, but that's why I'm here asking.

While learning to use Studio from scratch, I've previously managed to produce a lot of frustration and stress mostly due to the simple complexity of everything combined with a misperception of why the software exists. Now I understand the amazing history of Resolve and a lot of elements I found "surprising" just walking into the room at random.

My immediate impression is hinted at above, but what kind of allowance in design does Black Magic make for non-professional users like myself? I've read up a bit before deciding to post this, and I know now that there are angry complaints and flames that show up here. This isn't that: I think I'm looking for a glimpse inside Black Magic and what the standpoint is regarding the kind of streamlining I might like vs. the reality of what has to be managed.

Anyway, and I'm not intending to ask for support but instead to share my experience: through a lot of trial and error and total failure, destruction of my little laptop's rendering pipeline, bizarre results, scaling issues, etc, etc, I've become generally capable of doing neat things. I'll continue that slow, painful, totally unguided process because I'm persistent and fearful of forums, lol.

In light of this unfortunate self-abuse, any kind of insight that's shared will be really appreciated!

Help Driving me insane - Multicam vertical timeline - Timeline transforms not working

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I've done this so many times before but for some reason this isn't working.

Working on a project right now and I'm cutting a handful of social reels for my client. I've created a new vertical timeline for my Multicam edit. To get vertical video I'm just taking my open gate clips and basically adjusting them to fit in the 9:16 frame guide. For my A camera it seems to be working fine. For my B camera it is not and it's leaving dead black space around the clip. Pretty sure there is something obvious that I've left unchecked.

Help M4 Pro MacBook Pro can barely play Resolve’s Relight or AI Speed Warp: is this normal?

I just bought a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the full M4 Pro, 20-core GPU, 48 GB unified memory and 2 TB SSD. It’s a clean installation running DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.

I bought it specifically because my M3 Air was choking on Fusion compositions and the heavier Resolve Studio tools. Unfortunately, the first tests have been pretty discouraging.

AI Speed Warp Better on a clip slowed to 50% is essentially unplayable. I initially tested it alongside Film Look Creator, but Speed Warp itself appears to reduce playback to practically nothing.

Relight is much the same. I reduced the timeline to 1080 × 1920 and set timeline proxy playback to quarter resolution, and the Relight clip still barely plays at all.

Film Look Creator is a different story: it isn’t perfectly buttery smooth, but clips with Film Look Creator can functionally play at full resolution. So Resolve itself isn’t generally malfunctioning; the major collapse seems concentrated around the heavy AI effects.

I understand that I can use render cache or Render in Place. My concern is interactive playback while adjusting an effect. I bought this machine specifically to get away from applying something, watching the viewer freeze, and waiting for it to cache.

Is this expected performance from the 20-core GPU M4 Pro? Would an M4 Max, M5 Pro or M5 Max materially change interactive playback with Relight and Speed Warp, or are these simply cache-only effects on essentially every MacBook?

I’m still inside the return window and trying to determine whether this machine is actually the wrong tier for Resolve Studio, especially since I also use a fair amount of Fusion text and effects.

Help Storing Videos for Watching anfd YouTube

I have relatively recently started to use Davinci to edit and finish videos from over 20 years of holidays and trips. These holidays have been cultural ones so include clips of historic and cultural sites, landscapes, etc. There will be a lot of videos in the end.

I have been thinking about the best way to store them for ease of watching and I think my two options are:

Option 1: store on a large external hard drive attached to the TV

Option 2: upload to YouTube (with private settings) so we can watch them from there

My first question is some advice on how others manage this.

My second questions which are the more Davinci specific ones are:

If I produce video via Davinic and upload to YouTube (lets say my more recent 4K videos), will I lose quality?

And, if I use the YouTube option, is it relatively easy to produce via Davinci and upload sort-of automatically?

Thank you in advance for any help/advice.

Help Color looks "washed out" on Da Vinci Resolve for MAC

Post image
0 Upvotes

Edit: Resolved, Switching to Rec. 2020 instead of 709-A fixed it, thank you!

I've done some searching, I know this is a well documented issue but the threads I've found don't seem to fix it.

for one, a lot of them say the color looks wrong after export. This photo is a comparison of just the raw video (shot on my iphone) opened in quicktime, and the right is the video in Da Vinci on the cut screen, BEFORE export. And it looks like that aftere export as well.

I have "Use Mac Display color profile for viewers" selected and "Viewers Match Quicktime player when useing rec.709 scene" selected. I have the output color space set to Rec.709-A in the project settings and timeline settings set to match color settings.

It also seems like there's been another update since a lof of the videos and threads that i've found.

How in the world do I fix this?

I'm on a mac book pro M3 max, macOS Tahoe version 26.5.2 and just updated da vinci to the latest version.
