Release Notes DaVinci Resolve 21.0.3 Release Notes

DaVinci Resolve 21.0.3 has been released!

You can download the update from the support page or by going to DaVinci Resolve>Check for Updates.

Pre-Installation Notes

For DaVinci Resolve 21.0.3, BMD has taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 20.3.2. While this allows you to access the project library with 20.3.2, individual projects created or opened in 21.0.3 will no longer be accessible in 20.3.

BMD recommends a full project library backup as well as individual project backups (as required) before opening projects in 21.0 or later.

Help | Beginner Hi! How to fuse two layers of video?

Thumbnail youtu.be
3 Upvotes

Hello, I'm beginning with video editing, and well, learning DaVinci for myself. I have few experiencie in video editing and I was working with Premiere, but looking for an alternative.

Thing is, I have a vision. In a recording of myself I want to introduce this counting of cinema in a 'layer' ahead (idk how to explain or search for it, that's why I'm here) so the countdown effect is less intense and is on top of the video I recorded.

Can someone help me saying how to search for it or a videotutorial?

In case it's not clear, I'll be checking the post.

Help M4 Pro MacBook Pro can barely play Resolve’s Relight or AI Speed Warp: is this normal?

Upvotes

I just bought a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the full M4 Pro, 20-core GPU, 48 GB unified memory and 2 TB SSD. It’s a clean installation running DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.

I bought it specifically because my M3 Air was choking on Fusion compositions and the heavier Resolve Studio tools. Unfortunately, the first tests have been pretty discouraging.

AI Speed Warp Better on a clip slowed to 50% is essentially unplayable. I initially tested it alongside Film Look Creator, but Speed Warp itself appears to reduce playback to practically nothing.

Relight is much the same. I reduced the timeline to 1080 × 1920 and set timeline proxy playback to quarter resolution, and the Relight clip still barely plays at all.

Film Look Creator is a different story: it isn’t perfectly buttery smooth, but clips with Film Look Creator can functionally play at full resolution. So Resolve itself isn’t generally malfunctioning; the major collapse seems concentrated around the heavy AI effects.

I understand that I can use render cache or Render in Place. My concern is interactive playback while adjusting an effect. I bought this machine specifically to get away from applying something, watching the viewer freeze, and waiting for it to cache.

Is this expected performance from the 20-core GPU M4 Pro? Would an M4 Max, M5 Pro or M5 Max materially change interactive playback with Relight and Speed Warp, or are these simply cache-only effects on essentially every MacBook?

I’m still inside the return window and trying to determine whether this machine is actually the wrong tier for Resolve Studio, especially since I also use a fair amount of Fusion text and effects.

Help | Beginner How do I cope with position keyframe lines?

I'm doing position keyframing by hand (I don't intend in doing it in any other way) and I'm just wondering how (if it's even possible) to remove the motion lines so I can see while I am editing

Help | Beginner Can do Music Fade In/Out - even with a new mouse!

Post image
14 Upvotes

Sorry CAN’T do fades - I recently bought a Logi MX Master 4 mouse for use with my iPad. I have an Apple keyboard/cover. I still can’t fade in music. I thought buying the mouse would let me see handles but nope. I don’t know how to zoom in visually to see. The mouse cursor just jumps. I can see any handles for fading in music nor video.

I have been saving up to buy the mouse and am disappointed that I can’t do fades. I don’t want to have to buy a separate Apple keyboard just to do fades. Is that my only option?

Help Compound clip with sub-compound clips behaves like adjustment clip when subclips are transformed.

Upvotes

Sometimes if I've got a complicated compound clip with a few compound clips recursively inside, and I have transforms on the sub-layers, these transforms somehow get extrapolated outside of the compound clip on the main timeline and down to any clips on video tracks beneath as if the compound clip were an adjustment clip.

Usually it make the layers beneath flicker around the screen at different zoom and transform levels like crazy. Is there any workaround for this bug besides render in place?

Help Can someone tell me the differences in the clips on my timeline. It looks wrong to my eye. More details below.

Clips at the beginning of the timeline are what I want it to look like, but at one point during this event, I switched from recording in SDR to HDR on my iPhone. How can I get the later clips to look right compared to the clips at the beginning? I can't describe exactly what looks different about the clips (maybe baked?), but the one in HDR that I've tried to get close to the earlier clips hurts my eyes somehow and is unpleasant for me to look at. Please see screenshots to see exactly what settings I have on my color space transform node and what I did with curves. I haven't touched the wheels or anything else.

Help AI Super Scale is it any good?

Hey Resolvers,

I've been testing Resolve's AI Super Scale on some footage. In theory this feature should give cleaner detail/edges at the cost of render time, but honestly I'm not noticing much of a visible difference between the two outputs on my source material.

For context, I shot a music video on iPhone, and some of the rushes are naturally a bit soft when zoomed in. I figured this would be a decent test case for Super Scale, but I haven't noticed any real improvement using it, comparing the orignal media vs 4x Enhanced side by side, the results look pretty similar to me.

Anyone had better results, or found a workflow that makes the difference more apparent?

Cheers

Used a Blackmagic Pocket 4K with a Metabones Speedbooster and a Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 BeLOMO Zebra for most of it, and Resolve was completely new to me at the time.

Would love some feedback.

Solved PSA for Mac users! Uncheck 'Open using Rosetta'

A few months (or even years) ago I guess Resolve automatically checked 'Open using Rosetta' because of some legacy plugins or something.

I remember wondering why Resolve took all of a sudden ages to open up and slower than usual.

I though Blackmagic might have made too much bloat in the software - but nope! Just translating Intel stuff over to M-chip for absolutely no reason.

Resolve opens now in seconds and I feel like it's probably about 20-30% faster.

To check it out you open the 'Get Info' and see if it's checked there. It might affect some legacy / 3rd party plugins but I've been using it for a week with everything working great.

Discussion I hate how Resolve needs the C drive so much

Upvotes

I have a small SSD C drive for booting my OS off of and a much larger spinning rust drive that I use for most of my programs and Data.

Even though the bulk of Resolve is installed on my G drive when installing it allways has issues with my C drive being full. If I could fource everthing resolve related onto my G drive I would.

Help Merge Node Ghosting Issue

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey. I'm following along with the official BM compositing training video. Near the end of the project, after you have matte out the original video clip's whitewashed sky and replaced it with an still image of a blue sky, the new sky looks a little too vivid to be real. So the instructor shows you how to create a new merge node, in this case "Merge3", wherein you input the original whitewashed, pre-matte footage as the new merge node's foreground input, merging it overtop of the sky image, and then mess with the blend setting to give the sky image a little bit of that whitewash so they blend together better. However, when I input the original video clip into Merge3, a ghost appears (see the ghosting to the immediate right of the actor's face in screenshot) even though neither the original footage or the matted footage are moved in any direction. I tried adding a transform node between the original clip and merge3 to see if I could just realign the footage but when I do that to fix the ghost for one part of the video at that point, more ghosting appears on a different section at a different time in the video. I have tried putting the Merge3 node after the Tracker node's merging as well, but I still get ghosting. I've been playing around with this for a few hours. I am puzzled.

Help | Beginner DaVinci lagging a lot

Basically, I'm switching from CapCut to DaVinci and running into various issues with constant stuttering and freezing. Could the problem be my processor?

My current build consists of a Xeon 2660 V3 with a Machinist X99 motherboard, an RTX 3060 (12GB), and 32GB of DDR4 RAM (4x8), all running on an SSD.

Help | Beginner What's the best subscription for the best experience?

Hi! Im new to DaVinci resolve and i was wondering about the subscriptions.

I see if you use the free trail there's a watermark but how noticeable is it?

I also see there's a monthly price but then there was a high price on sale since im new it was $80 if i remember correctly, but it didnt say if that was a one time price or a yearly price and its only offered til July 26th.

And lastly is there a one time price option?

Any advice would be helpful!

Thank youu!!

Help | Beginner Is there a fast way to reapply the edits done to a video?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I have edited a video. However, I realized I have edited with the wrong take. The video I have edited has both people in the shot, but I want the other take where it only has the woman in there. Is there a way to apply the editing that I have done to my other take without starting all over?

What the woman had said in the other take is the same as the edited one, so I'm hoping that maybe there is a way to sync the woman's voice to the edited video so the program can reapply the edits on the other take based on her voice.

A video guide would be appreciated as I don't follow well with text instructions.

Help Replacing the Audio Track Later While Maintaining Synchronization

DaVinci Resolve Studio 20, Windows 11

I have a long recording of a show from which I’m creating a series of reels. I create a separate timeline for each reel.

Once all the reels are edited, I want to replace the rough mix of the audio track with the final audio mix, ensuring that the video and audio remain synchronized across all timelines.

The “Replace (Audio) Clip” function doesn’t work; after running this function, the audio track is replaced but loses all synchronization with the video.

Is there a smarter solution that ensures synchronization?

Help davinci resolve on manjaro linux for amd integrated gpu?

Hello everyone hope you have a lovely day.

so I do have an old laptop with amd radeon vega 10 gpu running manjaro linux ( it's a ryzen 7 2700u with integrated vega 10 and 16 gigs of ram).

the exact version of davinci that i wanna it to at least launch is 20.0.1

when running clinfo it gives me this

Number of platforms 0

which means I have no opencl drivers on my computer.

I have done some research and what i understand is that some opencl drivers works and some doesn't.

so those with amd gpus on linux, what drivers did you install? was it rocm-opencl or another thing?

Thanks appreciate your help!

How Did They Do This? For those of you delivering multiple formats (16:9 + 9:16 + 1:1) from one edit. What's your actual render workflow?

Curious how people handle this in practice. Right now I open each timeline, load a preset, add to queue, rename the output, and so on... for every timeline. On multi-video days this takes me an hour easily.

Do you use duplicate timelines per format? Or ctrl+c ctrl+v. Nested master timelines? Scripts? Genuinely wondering if everyone just suffers through this or if I'm missing something. Is there a Solution for?

Looking for a way to create this sort of prism overlay. I tried creating an adjustment layer, applying a prism blur and cropping the adjustment layer. Side note - if you do this in Normal composite mode, transparency is broken (21.0.3) and when you crop the adjustment layer, you see black where you cropped, not the clip underneath.

Help Multi cam / Time Sync bug in Davinci 21 (worked fine in 20)

Recent member, not a total noob, but still learning, so please be gentle.

TL:DR

When I apply my time synced, multi cam, workflow to create a time line, I get jumbled audio that's not in sync in Davinci 21.0.3 and the version 21.0.1 that I used before that.

I'm not doing any thing different as far as I know. The codex of the camera's, time code generators and audiorecorder have not changed, nor are they firmware updated. All files play great in Davinci individually. All files have the same 25 fps.

Also, I think I already produced my previous podcast with Davinci 21, so not sure what happened.

My workflow in a nutshell

So, this is what I did for every project (podcast): import media, time code sync the videos, based on audio. Codes look good, same time, same aprox start points, also same as the Mix Pre audio.

Next step is select all video, and audio and say "Create Multi Cam based on these files" .. Sync based on Time Code, etc.

I open the newly made Multicam clip in the timeline (I don't make a new time line yet).

What I get, and what goes wrong:

  • All files have the same audio
  • The audio is pitched up for all video
  • The audio is not even closely synced with the video. Every video track has asynchronous track.

This totally worked fine in Davinci 20.

Hi, here are my specs:

  • MacOS 26.5.2 (25F84), Mac Mini M4 Pro, 64Gb
  • Davinci 21.0.3 build 7,
  • Time code generators: 4 Tentacle Sync E,
  • 2 Sony Alpha ZV-E10 ii, codec: AVC140_3840_2160_H422P@L51 25 fps
  • 1 Sony Alpha 7iv, same codec
  • 1 Mix Pre 3ii, jammed with a Tentacle Sync E

Any other multi cam folks have similar experiences?

My temporary fix

Fortunately I also used my clapperboard as a fail safe, so now I used that as a solution, but I like to use my time code generators, to compensate possible dropped frames and other causes of drift as we record over an hour.

Love to hear your insights.
