Turkey partially invaded Cyprus on 20 July 1974 in an operation that progressed in two phases over the following month. Today I realized the some positive effects of the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus over the Greek communities.

The Intervention of the Turkish Army help the Greek communities of Cyprus and Greece in several ways:

It saved Greco-Cypriots from being the perpetrators of a state sponsored genocide and ethnic cleansing in the late 20th century.

It prevented more massacres like Maratha, Santalaris, Aloda and Tochni from happening. EOKA B killing Turkish civilians, including 13 year old boys and raping women was never a good image for the Greek community.

Secularized Cyprus from the centuries-long dysfunctional Theocracy under the Orthodox Archbishop of Cyprus. The end of the Theocracy, which instated by the Ottoman Empire after the Venetian rule, was archaic.

It ended all the militant fascist groups like EOKA B in the Island overnight. Having a Nazi-like genocidal militant group in the post-WW2 era was a shame for the Greek people.

It stopped all intercommunal violence immediately. The last intercommunal act of violence was the burning of the Turkish Cypriot quarter right after the invasion..

It absolved all previous crimes against the Humanity committed by the States of Greece and Cyprus. Neither Greece Junta not the state of Cyprus, as well as Grivas and Sampson, were punished for their crimes against Humanity in international court.

It gave all most of the water resources of the islands to Greeks. The population exchange afterwards allowed Greek to control the mountainous areas and the water sources.

It changed the status of Greece and Cyprus from perpetrators to victims overnight internationally.

It simultaneously brought democracy to Greece by delegitimizing the Greek Junta.

That made it possible for Greece and Cyprus to join the European Union.

Hello fellow internet users,

I have an issue regarding the National Service that I hope some of you can share some advice or experiences.

I am a Cypriot citizen (both parents Cypriot) but I was in the U.K from the age of 5 until 2016 (so 10 years living and working in Cyprus).

I haven't got a single letter from the military ordering me to do national service nor did I enquire for the last 10years.

Recently, I went on a trip to the U.K using my British passport (I am also a citizen of U.K) and the police pulled me to a room in Paphos airport and told me that they need me to make a statement for military service evasion, I was allowed to leave but I had the same issue return to Cyprus.

I don't have a problem doing military service but I have a full time job, pay rent, married, over the age of 30 e.g e.g... would they consider this if I have to do national service? Would it be shorter? Would I have to pay a fine/do additional months as I haven't done the service for the last 10 years?

What do you guys think? I am also going to speak to a lawyer that knows about military law and such.

We went to the Migration Department in Larnaca to apply for our Yellow Slips, but we were told that we first need to book an appointment by email.

We emailed [email protected] and waited for a week without receiving any response.

Since then, we've sent a second and even a third email, but still nothing.

Is this definitely the correct email address for booking a Yellow Slip appointment in Larnaca?

Has anyone managed to get an appointment recently? How long did it take them to reply?

Alternatively, can we apply in Nicosia or Limassol instead, or do we have to do it in Larnaca because we live here?

• On this day, 22 July,1974, the invading Turkish army broke through the National Guard’s defensive line in the morning and, by 10.00 am, had occupied the suburb of Kyrenia known as Agios Georgios. An hour and a half later, the first Turkish tanks were on the outskirts of Kyrenia

At midnight on 21–22 July, the spokesperson for the US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger mediated a ceasefire between the two warring parties, which was reached in the early afternoon of 22 July. Following Ioannidis’s removal from power, Bonanos who was the Greek senior officer in charge of the coup against the Cypriot government, assumed responsibility for ensuring that Greece did not become embroiled in a Greek-Turkish war.

At the same day, the transport of Turkish supplies from Mersin is being finalised. Bolstered by heavy weaponry, the attack on Kyrenia begins, the town is almost deserted, as the residents had moved to Agios Ilarion for safety. The Turkish forces, with air and naval support, launched the attack shortly after 11 am against commando and infantry units (33rd Mechanised Brigade, 306th and 251st Infantry Battalions), which, lacking anti-tank cover, were unable to put up any meaningful resistance. By the end of the day, a strong bridgehead had been established in Kyrenia. Two days after the invasion and the landing at Five Mile beach, the Turkish occupation army had now taken Kyrenia, trapping thousands of residents and tourists who were still in the city.

Meanwhile, in the rest of Cyprus, sporadic clashes are also taking place between units of the Greek Cypriot National Guard and Turkish Cypriot enclaves scattered throughout the island.

With the support of artillery, the attack on the Turkish Cypriot enclaves in Sakkaria, Karaolos and the old town of Famagusta is brought to a close. The Turkish air force bombs the rest of the city.

At 15:00, the Turkish Air Force launched a heavy attack on Nicosia International Airport. The ceasefire announced at 16:00 was broken shortly afterwards, with bombing resuming at 17:15. Ground forces were engaged at Dikomo at 18:15, and also in the village of Trachonas. An attack was also launched on the enclave of Agios Ilarion, until a ceasefire was declared.

In Washington, the US Secretary of State states that the return of President Archbishop Makarios to power cannot be ruled out.

As the events of that particular day in Athens drew to a close, the military dictatorship of the Junta de facto collapsed.

At the same time that afternoon, the ceasefire agreement is being implemented, though not by the invading Turkish army, which is continuing its bloodless advance to expand its bridgehead into areas beyond those where troops are stationed, whilst the agreement is being implemented.

By the afternoon of the same day, the invading Turkish army had extended its bridgehead, capturing the town of Kyrenia and the villages of Agios Georgios, Trimithi, Temblos and Thermia.

I'm moving to Limassol for some time, I don't have a drivers license. I'm thinking about an electric bike. I think I would mostly use it to get to areas a little further from the city centre. Like trails and parks, beaches. But will I explode from traffic? Are the roads okay to ride? /allowed?

At the most I thought they might do such a thing by making a deal with Turkey, that is, authorizing Turkey to intervene so that Greece could then respond, to be followed by partition and double enosis. I went on thinking so even after the coup, when I got to London. It took some time for me to realize that Ioannides had simply acted out of a lack of intelligence. And yet I knew him. In 1963 and 1964 he had been in Cyprus as an officer of the National Guard, and one day he came to see me, accompanied by Sampson, in order to "explain to me secretly a plan that would settle everything." He had bowed to me, he had kissed my hand most respectfully, then: "Beatitude, here's the plan. To attack the Turkish Cypriots suddenly, everywhere on the island. To eliminate them one and all. Stop." I was flabbergasted. I told him I couldn't agree with him, that I couldn't even conceive the idea of killing so many innocent people. He kissed my hand again and went away in a huff. I tell you, he's a criminal.

Have been to Cyprus dozens of times, however finding the right accommodation this time round is proving to be difficult! 2 bed villa, private pool wanted! Paphos / coral Bay Area ideally. This idea that Russians or Israeli colonialism exists in Cyprus is something I’ve seen in this Reddit channel a lot and I would like to make a couple points on this matter and see what you guys think.

The problem goes as follows:
Russians and Israelis are buying out properties increasing the rent and property prices in Cyprus for the Cypriots, additionally they are discriminating against native Cypriots in hiring, renting out, etc.

I’ve seen this with posts like one where someone was renting out to “preferred Russian speakers” and people accused him of being racist and breaking the law.

So I’ve done some digging and here is a break down of what I believe based with reasoning.

First of all in terms of hiring and renting practices based on racial or ethno preferences that is illegal. Under the eu racial equality directive. However hiring and renting out based on communication skills insofar as language doesn’t fall under that directive and hence it is not illegal. Any race ethnicity can speak Russian and having preferences of Russian speakers is completely fine due to communication reasons.

Second of all insofar as housing prices. Yes. Housing prices have increased due to foreign investment starting with the golden passport and still has not stopped due to residence permit and the primary investors are Russians and Israelis due to their third world status. However the issue here is that the average Cypriot is the one most benefiting from the rise in housing.

The housing market over 10Y has increased by 50% according to trade economics. Where as in the same period the average Cypriot salary has increased by 66% according to the same source. Hence the rental and property prices have been out raced by the increase in income for the average Cypriot. The primary reason for this increase in wealth is foreign investment. Foreign companies provide a massive portion of the Cypriot GDP and economic capacity providing jobs paying taxes etc.

From that point due to the gdp growth outracing the populas the average Cypriot has received far more public benifits than they did 10 years ago such as with the Gesy system. Where as Russians and Israelis are not entitled to many public benifits such as subsidies.

Additionally foreign investors pay more on loans from banks and face governmental discrimination in many reported cases such as in trials or in document processing time.

Lastly id like to add a point people bring up for colonisation is the seeming wealth that the average foreigner posses. Simply it’s true the average foreigner is far wealthier than the average Cypriot. However this isn’t government bias rather is a self fulfilling prophecy foreigners are required to have a higher level of education such as a bachelors AT MINIMUM to have a chance to get a visa, or must have a 500k+ investment and the means to support themselves so the only way they can come here is if they provide to the economy while receiving minimal benifits.

Overall I think The colonialism part seems absurd and has no logical basis besides hate chasing. If you wish to say something about those who contribute nothing and take a lot of things yes sure but cmon guys lock in.

I visited southern part and northern part and the whole island is truly soulless. reminds me of Dubai but as island version. Is the reason because of all not taxes paying rich immigrants/expats? it’s really sad this country has so much potential.
