I am by no means a coin collector but this may have started a journey for me. A Buffalo 'hobo' Nickel 1935 was given to me as change for my coffee - feels like fate! This will definitely be staying with me forever. Is there anything I don't know about that would be cool to know - or is this just a cool little random find?

This is a nice mix of 90% silver coins I got over the years & from my great grandma. Some of them are in really high grades too.

Added this good looking 1916 S Walking Liberty to the collection. Looks good for a G06! Paid $140 which I thought was reasonable.

My wife inherited this 1921 silver peace dollar. Searching online and everything is cleaned so I think that's the way to go. Do I clean this one and then protect it somehow? Any other recommendations? TIA!

Edit - thank you for all the great responses! We plan to save it to make it be a problem for whoever inherits it from us. Is there something we should do right now to halt any further damage or better prepare it for long term storage? It is currently in a purpose built padded coin holder that itself is likely pretty old.

I told them the other day how I was a coin collector because I saw them at the bank and they saw me buy rolls of coins. Fast forward to now, I end up at their house because the nice old man there told me to go visit them. He pulled out a bag and sold me everything in it. He said “don’t cheat yourself out of money” and I offered $40 and accepted. How’d I do?

Going through a small collection and the gentleman has this. Comparing to XF examples on PCGS it looks…off. Some of the details are mushy like the neck point between the star and 1, the letters in LIBERTY aren’t as sharp and clear as comparable genuine examples, and it looks like there’s some mild pitting.

Weight is right enough and it passes the magnet test which I’m assuming it could be silver at least but I’d have to test it. I’ve already found 1 fake Morgan along with a few other fake coins so I’m extra suspicious.

The guy acquired all this from working retail and people would come to pay and they’d spend silver sometimes and he’d nab it when they did.

Hello! This might sound like a BS story, but it is absolutely true. I have been quietly lurking in coin subs to see what I can learn and decided to just finally ask the question.

When I was in my very early 20's (50+ now) my uncle died in Minnesota. He owned a "junk-tique" and had these two huge buildings, plus his own house, full of junk EVERYWHERE. My mother was selling the whole place but told me to go pick out something to keep.

I found a metal box (looks like a long rectangular safety deposit box - but way heavier and old) and he had written on it "Shop Tools don't touch". So, of course I touched it. It was crammed full of coins and paper money. Some sorted into containers, some in baggies, US money, world money. Coins, old paper money. Just everything. Literally hundreds of coins.

In the past, I looked through and kind of separated what I thought was 'cool' but I didn't (and still don't) know much about what is valuable. And it has been sitting in a desk drawer ever since.

What should I do with this stash???? I have thought about taking the whole thing to a coin dealer and asking them to look it over. But I would have to leave it all with them and I feel weird about that. I wouldn't know any better if any of it came up missing when I came back.

Won this at auction last year for a decent amount less than these usually go for. Thought at the time it might be a fake but was willing to take a chance for the price. The line on the reverse makes me suspicious. I took it to a coin shop and they offered to buy it for more than I paid for it, but I think it was a new employee. Wondering what others think.

You think it's a great collectible for numismatists? Due to the low mintage, it's already got more expensive than the price i bought.

I am wondering if the frosted look can wear off via circulation. I'd like to hear your opinions. I do see signs of that frosty look on the 1970, and I am less sure about the 1968. Would you like more pictures?

It’s definitely not the best penny out there but definitely a good find. Before this my oldest penny was from 1939 so I went down by 13 years!

How many of you guys subscribe to the mint for yearly coin releases and are you satisfied with the purchase at the end of the day?

I have been buying bullion (gold/silver) for about 3 years now and in the past month have also started coin collecting (long time lurker, finally took the plunge).

I like the looks of the proof ASE, and the Morgan and peace dollar proof coins but the price seems very steep for what it is? I think the issue I am having is, I'm struggling to decouple myself from bullion buying and accept that collecting is more about buying what you individually like?

Any advice welcome on the Mint, coin collecting, etc etc
