Because there's so many freshmen that are now getting their registration times and keep asking "is this good?" or other similar questions, I think it's good to teach y'all how registration slots actually work, namely because this isn't widely shared by cmu despite being kinda important.

So, to start all students are split into 4 groups, you will be in these groups for your entire time at cmu. Each group will be randomly assigned into registration section 1, 2, 3, or 4. These registration sections designate which time your registration time will be.

Section 1: 8:00-10:00
Section 2: 10:00-12:00
Section 3: 12:00-2:00
Section 4: 2:00-4:00

Your time will be randomly selected at a 15minute increment within your time slot. So someone in section 4 who got a time of 2:15 actually got lucky with their time, not unlucky.

The catch is, each semester the groups will rotate their time section next semester, move up the list. So section 3 becomes section 2 and section W2 becomes section 1 until section 1 becomes section 4. This forms a loop that'll cycle every semester you're at cmu. So for example, if you have a time of 12:30 this semester, that's means you're in section 3 and guarantees that you'll have a time in 10:00-12:00 next semester.

This semester means, that with vary little variation, you'll know exactly how good of a registration time you'll have each semester and can plan accordingly. I recommend trying to take more popular classes when you know you're going to have a good time and get the easy to get in classes out of the way while you're going to have a bad time anyways.

is it possible to get off 15-122 lecture 1 waitlist or is lec 1 100% reserved for SCS? i'm #8 rn. i also joined the waitlist for 15-112 and am #3 for that waitlist

My registration timeblock was 10AM EST. Ig this course is really popular but, does this waitlist move? or are the spots just reserved? I'm an incoming freshman in Dietrich. It said for some sections that some spots are reserved for Dietrich but all sections are waitlisted already.. And 6/6, I guess I can't see the waitlist status on all the other sections, but I'll assume they're 6/6 too.

I’m an incoming CIT freshman. My registration time is approximately in the middle of the cohort (11 AM), and my advisor mentioned I might miss out on First-Year Writing (76-107/108) for the fall semester, so I need to pick a General Education course as a backup.

Given my heavy math/cs load, my main priority is finding a GenEd with a very light workload and a smooth path to an A so I can focus on my core courses.

Any specific course or professor recommendations that fit the bill for CIT GenEd requirements?

I’m an incoming freshman in CIT with an A-Level background. Based on my scores (A* in A-Level Pure Math and predicted A* or at least A in Physics), I am qualify to skip:

• Physics: 33-141 (Physics I for Engineering) & 33-142 (Physics II for Engineering)
• Math: 21-120 (Differential and Integral Calculus) & 21-122 (Integration and Approximation)

I’d love to get some advice from upperclassmen: Is it better to just take the credit and skip ahead, or is it worth taking these intro courses at CMU to build a stronger foundation?

i saw that there’s a solidcore around 30min by bus from cmu. is there any closer studio that does similar workouts? or if anyone goes there that can have some insight on the commute and bus system and how convenient it is to get there from campus?

What's the intramural sports scene like, are there grad students or mostly undergrad? II'm incoming masters) How do you sign up and how good do you have to be? I'm looking at intramural volleyball or maybe tennis :)

Does anybody have experience with Modern Chem II (09-106) with Botcha?

I have the credit for it, but I was instead going to take Honors Chem (09-107) with Sherwood since I took a summer class with her and thought it was great + I heard grades are higher. Also, to review the fundamentals and potentially skip Modern Chem II if I get an A, since I definitely want to take more chemistry classes in the future.

There's also no FCE for 09-107, so I've been going by word of mouth from chem majors.

I could also sign up for Modern Chem II and then drop within the 10-day period.

Hey all, had a few questions about my current schedule as a freshman for materials science.

It's a total of 43 units which I think is manageable first semester, and covers a lot of the requirements I want but I was hoping for a second look to be sure there aren't major discrepancies here.

The thing for 21-120 is that I can apply an AP credit there to skip, but am not entirely sure if that is smart as I sort of struggled in AP Calc so I'm assuming that taking 21-122 would be a bit too much to handle first semester.

*As a quick side note it says I need 21-090 as a precalc prerequisite for 33-141 but from what I've seen online I guess my SAT or ACT score cover that and I just need the waiver right?

My only other question is about 76-101, I would prefer to do the full writing requirement in the one semester then use the space in the spring for another gen ed, but I saw you could instead do mini courses and was considering 76-106 + 76-108 as an alternative.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has taken Large-Scale computing and could grant me some insight on course load and content (and profs)? I’m a Physics PhD and I’m experienced in Python + regularly use PSC for my research. No ML experience though. I know the comp sci classes here are demanding, and want to know if it would be doable to take along with one other STEM graduate course. If I take it it’ll be this fall. Thanks!

I graduated from CMU in 2010. At the time, there were no latin honors and I put on my resume "University Honors, College Research Honors".

Fast forward, I am reviewing a resume for a job applicant who graduated from CMU in 2020 and they put "Summa Cum Laude" on their resume.

Am I correct that CMU still does not offer Latin honors? Or did that change? Do you think they translated one of the honors to "Summa Cum Laude"? Have you done this?

FWIW, it was the same major so I don't even think it could be a difference across colleges.

Has anyone gotten to MSR directly without applying? That is, finding an advisor who agreed to advise you for MSR and then starting MSR directly without formal application.

I’m an incoming math freshman who doesn't have ap cs credit. I took the cs placement ~4 weeks ago and scored 19/20 but I still haven't received anything indicating I have a waiver for 15-112 (it doesn't show up on sio/stellic either). I've emailed my first year advisor but she hasn't replied back to me yet

I am a rising senior in high school. I'll be applying to CMU later this year, and I want to study AI (specifically computer vision). However, I know that SCS admissions is very competitive (<5%). So from my research online, the Stats & ML Dietrich school seems to be much more reasonable while still being largely in the same area.

So I have a few questions:

I was wondering how feasible it would be for me to transfer to the AI major if I get accepted for Stats and ML?

And if not, is it easy to get accepted for an AI additional major (and is the workload possible)?

If that still wouldn't work, would an AI minor and Robotics minor both teach me roughly the same content as the AI major, and would the workload be possible?

Or can I just take AI and CV (and potentially robotics) classes separately without declaring anything additional, and still learn the same content as the AI major.

Starting the Master of Privacy Engineering program this fall, coming in with some prior research experience in differentially private federated learning. Trying to get a head start on finding a lab rather than waiting until spring to figure this out.

I already know of Prof. Virginia Smith's group and Prof. Giulia Fanti's group but am curious who else on campus is working in this space, whether that's other faculty, postdocs or PhD students in MLD, CyLab or within the privacy program itself.

Also trying to figure out the right way to approach this as an incoming MS student. Does it make more sense to take a relevant course first and prove interest that way or is emailing faculty/current PhD students directly before the semester starts a reasonable move?

And if anyone's balanced a heavy MS course load with trying to actually produce research early on, I'd love to hear how that went and what you'd do differently.

Does 70-208 still count for intermediate data analysis class even thought it’s not listed in stat curriculum ? As of now I’m a primary Tepper major but my goal is to add statML when I get to campus. But I know Dietrich/DS/stat students get priority for 36-202 which is why I’m keeping 70-208 my backup. My advisor who I should probably trust more tbh says they’re equivalent but with 3 days to freshmen registration and anxiety building up about getting the classes I want, I just wanna confirm, as it would be redundant to take 70-208 then learn I need 36-202 if I want to get statML major .
