Hello all i am of mixed race and am trying to dig into my chinese/hong kong ties my last name is 黄 spelled wong i really do like the name 宇 since to my knowledge it means u universe/cosmos which i think is something that really draws my attention . Im a guy so im
Not sure its suitable for part of a given name for a guy , i know it means universe/ cosmos but not sure if its talking about stars and the sky or more a spiritual or non physical meaning like heaven or the universe in a sense of connection and divinity. Or if it could be used as both in a name im under the impression it can be used in a name as implying limitless or vastness of something. Or if there are other suggestions to imply a starry skys limitless for a name , for the other character or part of name i feel like the type of person i am isnt tough or prideful or strong im a very happy positive person im very compassionate and caring a lot of people feel safe around me id love for name suggestions to have a tie to my character or pureness and humility kindness that goes with 宇 (yu ) in a sense that it implies limitless of the other character , im strongly looking for a name thats a but younger sounding maybe common in hong kong that sounds unmistakably male ( and hopefully also noticeably chinese sounding) to non speakers especially if its pronounced close to how its spelt like yu is hard to mispronounce . Please give multiple suggestions as im looking to explore all Options and if the character and hong kong spelling could be given please and thanks you , its a bit of a demanding request i apologize but i do genuinely want to pick a name thats meaningful and also correct not like how some websites names dont make sense :P

So I read somewhere in this sub that it's sounding funny/weird for a native speaker to read text fully written in spoken Cantonese. Is that true? If someone writes a letter to a native speaker using purely spoken Cantonese. Can they read it? I know for a fact that when they read out loud texts that written in Mandarin style, they read it in spoken Cantonese. It's really fascinating, like they do two jobs: learn to speak the spoken Cantonese & learn Mandarin writing. I'm just not sure if they can read spoken Cantonese or appreciate it?

i want to write a card in cantonese.
i’m learning cantonese however i’m very beginner at the moment. it’s my boyfriend’s birthday soon (he’s from hong kong) and i wanted to write part of his card in cantonese however i’m limited since i don’t have a lot of knowledge.

Ive noticed on reddit and other social media that out of all the chinese “dialects”, influencers who speak cantonese (a subgroup of yue” seem to be the most arrogant. Yue isn’t even the second most spoken dialect of chines, nor the oldest, nor the most different, but a lot of cantonese influencers seem to try to push the dichotomy of chinese being either cantonese or mandarin. Cantonese isn’t better than the other “dialects” at all since they are all equal, and yet some people say it’s better. It is important to preserve “dialects” like shanghainese or cantonese or hokkien and even varieties of mandarin, and the push of standard mandarin is killing local varieties, but that doesn’t make it “less qualified” than cantonese. I’ve only noticed this among cantonese influencers, which is why i’m posting it on this subreddit. Why does this seem to be true?

Nothing speeds up time like becoming a new mum, with aging parents. I'm second generation Cantonese and really want to make sure my kid knows where his family comes from, and that he can connect to every part of who he is. My parents are older, so my son won’t have that much time with his grandparents. 

I have been waiting for life story and memoir platforms to include an option for Cantonese so I can record mum and dad’s life stories in the language they are most comfortable in. But I also need it to also be accessible for me and my kid with our practically nil Chinese literacy. 

I ended up finding a way to do it myself, and then a friend wanted to do it for her dad too. We want to help other second and third generation Chinese migrants preserve their family histories and language, so we set up our own platform Chuanjia (https://www.chuanjia.co/). 

I'm so excited about mum's book. It's got QR codes to retrieve her voice recordings, photos and quotes in Chinese with English translations.

We just want to preserve Cantonese family histories in our parents' voice, words and language. So our kids keep speaking Cantonese, know where they come from and can get to know their grandparents. To go beyond superficial conversations around "have you eaten?"

For those who are not confident interviewing their parents in Cantonese, we have an AI interview option over the phone that interviews parents in a relaxed conversational way. I’m still experimenting with interviewing my dad and recording interviews myself, because I don’t want to miss out on the experience of getting to know him in real time. Embarrassingly, I have actually learnt so much about my parents' lives through this process.

Has anyone else run into similar challenges? If you're from a second- or third-generation immigrant family, have you found good ways to capture family stories across different languages? Wondering if others share the same interest, or if my friend and I are just unicorns...

My parents are studying for their naturalization interview, and I couldn't find good Cantonese-language prep material, so I built them an app.

It's got quizzes for all the civics questions, and a practice oral interview where it asks the questions out loud and you answer out loud, including in Cantonese if that's the route you qualify for. Everything on screen is shown in Chinese and English side by side, so family members like I can follow along too (I can't read Chinese).

I moved to the US as a kid and my Cantonese isn't strong enough to "test" whether the Chinese in my app is appropriate, so I'd love feedback from fluent speakers, especially translations. It's free, no ads, and it doesn't collect any data (everything runs on your phone).

Before 1980, Shenzhen was divided into a Cantonese-speaking western region and a Hakka-speaking inland eastern region. Some sources state that Shenzhen was predominantly Hakka-speaking, while others claim that it had a larger Cantonese-speaking population. Some of these sources are outdated and rely on 19th-century data from the Gazetteer of Xin'an County (when present-day Hong Kong and Shenzhen were still part of the same county) which recorded more Yue (Cantonese) villages than Hakka villages.

However, from what I have observed, many people (including from Hakkas themselves) regard Shenzhen as a traditionally Cantonese-speaking area, similar to neighboring Dongguan and Zhuhai, rather than as a predominantly Hakka-speaking region.

Another thing to note is that public transportation in Shenzhen makes announcements in only three languages: Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. Hakka is never used, even in districts such as Longgang, where there has historically been a significant Hakka population. This could support the theory that Cantonese has traditionally had a stronger public presence in Shenzhen, although it does not provide evidence for the relative number of Cantonese and Hakka speakers.

My wife and I live in the UK, and are currently in the process of booking a registrar to get our newborn son's birth certificate.

My in-laws have provided some inspiration for his Chinese name, and from that list we quite like 宇飛 or 宇希 (the family name is 陳). However, we have no idea if they sound odd, or are uncommon for a boy, or if there's something else we're missing.

Feedback would be great - if you have any alternatives please add Pinyin, as I'm not great at reading the characters! Thank you all in advance!

What’s the semantic subtleties or usage subtleties of these two verb phrases? I’ve only ever used and heard of the second one, 墮胎 do6 toi1, but both mean “to have an abortion”.

Hello everyone,

I am currently searching for a PhD topic and am interested in the way speakers of local languages react when confronted with Mandarin, the agency of speakers, and discourses regarding this. I wanted to write about Cantonese specifically and am wondering if any of you know any clubs or something like that that try to promote Cantonese, and if so how, to join one for an ethnohraphic study.

Last time I was in Guangzhou I met someone who is part of such a club, but I didn't join at that time. So I know they exist, the question is just how to find one.
