Alt brands review

I've been thinking to write this review for a while now, and here I am.

I have been a Lego fan for 40+ years but for several reasons (don't want to start a flame war) I decided to try the alternatives.

The first set I tried is St Andrew's Church from Reobrix. The mldel is very detailed and looks great. Quality wise, the colors are good and there are no visible defects. The bricks however don't fit in nicely: they fit too tightly, sometimes preventing a good assembly and leaving gaps (see picture).

They are also very difficult to disassemble if you make a mistake. The stickers look nice and with a transparent background, giving a better result than Lego. They are a bit more complicated to apply and if you make a mistake you cannot take them off.

After that I tried FunHole's Mill and Dressmaker. Still plenty of details and a nice result. I found the bricks quality to be on par and even above Lego (no mold smudges). The fit is just like Lego, tight enough to hold but easy to disassemble. There are a lot of specialised bricks, from slopes to hollow bricks to pass le light cables. The lighting is a nice touch but personally I don't use it much. There are no stickers, all details are printed.

On the downside, some of the colors feel off, like the orange on the straw roof, blond wigs, or the random fluo-white bricks. I also don't really like the minifigs, though some accessories fit nicely with Lego minifigs.

I hope this short review is useful.

Please let me know if you have found alts of similar or better quality.

Modified BMW M4 GT3 with a Black & White Livery

I spent a few days building this BMW M4 GT3, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

However, I felt the original color scheme was a little too simple, so I decided to make some modifications and give it a new black and white livery. I also added some yellow parts as accents to make the design stand out more.

Basically a WW2 only builder. Anyone use this company? The marketing is good but I haven’t found anyone that’s actually purchased and built.

Wange “New Chamartín Stadium” (Estadio Santiago Bernabeu)

I found this set and was intrigued. I’ve never heard of this brand, but I decided to try it out, especially after seeing that this set is roughly 1:800 scale and therefore matches several other LEGO buildings I have. It was amusing because I recognized it instantly as Real Madrid’s stadium, but I don’t think this company has the licensing to use it, hence the random name.

I’d say that this is a very nice set overall. The part quality is a bit below LEGO I would say, but for the most part it wasn’t an issue. There were a few repetitive sections and a couple annoying sections to build, mostly in the corners of the seats, but that’s mostly down to the actual building this set is emulating.

Overall, I really like how this turned out and think it will pair nicely with my other 1:800 Lego buildings.

Found what might be the best MV-22 Osprey brick set available right now

This MV-22 Osprey caught my attention. The tiltrotor mechanism is what makes this aircraft special, and this set actually captures that feeling with working features instead of just being a static display model.

The folding wings, rotating rotors, adjustable engines, and detailed structure make it a really satisfying build for aviation fans and military model collectors.

I think this might be one of the best Osprey brick models currently available. Curious what everyone else thinks.

Help please

Hi there! My daughter was moving her Japanese cherry blossom Beego set, and tripped, and unfortunately it broke. She made it about a year ago so I don’t have the instructions anymore, but she is very heartbroken as she put a lot of time and effort into making it.

Hoping someone is able to send me a PDF or pictures for the instructions. Or at least point me in the right direction to get those!

Thank you! 💙

I Created A Tool To Create Brick-Based Games In Unity

Post image
9 Upvotes

Over the past few months I have been working on a digital brick-building system inside the Unity game engine called Ztorm Bricks Builder.

It lets you create brick-based worlds and environments directly inside Unity using a modular piece library, real-time piece snapping systems, and flexible customization including the colors & shading of the bricks.

You can check it out on the asset store now.

Current Features

  • Advanced Snapping System – Intuitive grid, piece, and rotation-based snapping for fast and precise brick placement
  • Reusable Set System – Group pieces into prefabs and instantly reuse complex structures across your project
  • Customizable Color & Shader Databases – Create and manage color systems with global shader control and real-time updates
  • Full Customization System – Control colors, shaders, stud styling, and overall visual behavior of your bricks
  • Custom Piece Creation (Advanced) – Convert any 3D model into a snappable brick and add it to your piece library (optional advanced workflow)

What's Next

My goal is to allow people to create any build they want without worrying about performance for their game. With that said, the next batch of content I want to add include:

  • New piece types for even more building options
  • Adding SNOT-style building (sideways / multi-angle snapping) for more complex builds
  • LOD implementation to increase performance even further, allowing for even larger builds

Feedback

I really want to make this tool the best it can be. As such, if you are interested in this tool, I would really appreciate thoughts on:

  • What kinds of missing pieces would be most useful to add?
  • What would make a system like this feel "complete" for you?
  • Are there any missing features you'd expect from a brick-building toolkit?
  • Should adding hinge pieces be a priority?

Thanks for any feedback as it genuinely helps shape where I can take this next.

This was a good build, and really has a good likeness to the games. There are some issues, like the helicopter and the crane, but otherwise a solid build.

I'll get the other set for this at a later date. I'm tempted by the Red Alert one I saw.

I honestly don't know why battleships need so many gun turrets. It kind of looks like a long, skinny hedgehog covered in spikes. 😂 I have no idea how all of those guns were actually used, but it looks incredibly cool!

Barad Dur Help

Post image
3 Upvotes

Just got a generic/unbranded Barad Dur set in today. I am incredibly stoked.

Only thing I’m trying to figure out is how the bags are ordered? They’re all numbered in a way that doesn’t make too much sense (inside of the bigger bags).

I’m currently thinking about opening everything and separating it into bins by color, but as many of you know, it’s quite a big set.

Anyone with experience or guidance - thank you in advance.

did anyone tried to make lego bricks at home?

legos in my country became extremely expensive (some sets costs more than minimum wage and other building block toys are also really expensive for a box of molded plastic) and ı was wondering if its possibly to make lego bricks at home

Are the Chinese brands of Lego legit?

Thumbnail aliexpress.com

I haven't bought any sets before but I'm interested in the Barad Dur set but can't spend $700 with taxes on it. There are sets in the $150 range on the Chinese sites that say they have the same amount of pieces in them. Has anyone done one before and does it look good? I'm worried about still spending $150 which is still a decent chunk of change and it not being able to be built properly.
