South Korea SK Wednesday Update: Good day for the movies affected by Hope and Minions last week

Week-to-Week Drops

Movie Mon-Mon Drop Tue-Tue Drop Wed-Wed Drop Thu-Thu Drop Fri-Fri Drop Sat-Sat Drop Sun-Sun Drop Week-Week Drop
Hope 61%
Minions and Monsters 43%
Moana 62% 51% +1%
The Eyes 63% 47% 5%
Toy Story 5 58% 52% +6%
Hive/Colony 82% 80% +22%

Hope: The movie crossed 2.5 million admits and $19 million, but it is certainly going to miss that 10 million admit breakeven point by a very large margin.

Minions and Monsters: A decent day, as the movie got north of $3 million. The bad news is that its chance of hitting 1 million admits is fading really fast. Being barely above Moana and Toy Story 5 is a bad sign for its legs.

Moana: An excellent Wednesday, as it was one of only three movies on the chart to increase from last week. The movie crossed 800k admits and will rock past $6 million tomorrow.

The Eyes: The movie dropped from last Wednesday and is still on track to miss breakeven.

Toy Story 5: Toy Story 5 had a very nice day, and the recovery should stay on track with an incredibly small drop tomorrow from last Thursday. 2.8 million admits and $20 million are coming this weekend.

Hive/Colony: A nice bounce-back day, as the film was starting to look dead.

Presales

Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Comps increased against Demon Slayer again. When I get home tomorrow, we are tossing Zootopia 2 and Wicked 2 for superhero comps.

Domestic Young Washington (day 19) grossed 627,285 (day 19) / $41.98M Total. The film's race to $50M DOM looks like it's going to go down to the wire.

pace has declined since my last look in a week or so ago. Napkin math - mapping the current gap in weekly sales to remaining box office grosses, AIR gets 49.96M, Jesus Revolution gets $50.56M, and the adjusted upwards Reagan dynamic gets you $48.78M. Obviously Washington is falling steeper than the other two films and has the looming threat of Spider-Man creating a real theatrical crunch (though scaling Reagan upwards creates a slight positive bias).

If nothing changed I think you'd assume it to end a hair below $50M right now; however, given that $50M is a nice round number that might be relevant to licensing, it will be interesting to see if there's any additional juice to be squeezed.

📠 Industry Analysis How long can “The Odyssey” hold onto coveted Imax 70mm screens, which only exist in 25 theaters in the U.S. and 41 globally?

  • In New York and Los Angeles, there are no Imax 70mm tickets available through Aug. 19, a sign of the frenzy to see Christopher Nolan‘s epic in the premium large format. And in London, Imax 70mm screenings are sold out through Sept. 10, nearly two months after the film’s release.
  • More screenings in Imax 70mm will be added to keep up with the intense demand. But the question is: how long can “The Odyssey” hold onto those coveted screens, which only exist in 25 theaters in the U.S. and 41 globally?
  • The next Imax releases include the Aug. 14 sci-fi survival flick “The End of Oak Street” (which also stars Anne Hathaway) and Zach Cregger’s take on “Resident Evil,” which comes out Sept. 18. While those titles, each filmed for Imax, will premiere in the premium format, that doesn’t mean “The Odyssey” will have to vacate Imax screens entirely.
  • An Imax spokesperson tells Variety the company’s next Imax 70mm commitment is to “Dune: Part Three.” That means it is not contractually obligated to give up those screens until the Denis Villeneuve film premieres in December. That said, the spokesperson indicated it is highly unlikely “The Odyssey” will play in Imax 70mm through that month, adding that it will likely return in the format multiple times until the end of the year.
  • Theaters have struggled to meet the demand for Imax screens, adding 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. showings, for instance. Fans have traveled across state lines to see the film in Imax 70mm, with tickets being upsold by scalpers.

Domestic TheFlatLannister: "Brand New day had incredible growth over the last two days. It has already sold 200k across MTC3 for previews and 150k for Friday, easily making it the biggest thing I've ever tracked."

"I want to be cautious here, but how things are going, with normal CBM walkups I am thinking $55M previews as baseline and if it has above average walkups, we may have a new previews record holder by a good amount. OW $250M++ (emphasis on the ++)"

On Doomsday:

"With Doomsday out of the way (sorta, it had an impressive Day 2 considering how capacity constraint it is; It's still pacing relative to BND Friday, Saturday, Sunday somehow, i'm not even sure how that's possible). It will fall behind by a lot today though as there just isn't much seats left."

I organized an AMA/Q&A with legendary filmmaker/screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn. He has previously directed films/series Drive, Only God Forgives, Bronson, The Neon Demon, Pusher trilogy, Copenhagen Cowboy, Too Old To Die Young, Valhalla Rising, and more.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1v3mkcv/i_am_nicolas_winding_refn_director_of_drive_the/

He will be back at 4:45 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

His new film, Her Private Hell, premiered at Cannes in May and is out in theaters via Neon this weekend. It stars Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton.

Thank you :)

Christopher Nolan scored his best Tuesday ever at the domestic B.O. as The Odyssey rang up $21.4M. That bests his previous Tuesday high, which was The Dark Knight ($20.8M, on July 22, 2008). The revised number from Universal ranks as the second best Tuesday YTD behind Toy Story 5‘s $23.69M, and it’s the second best Tuesday ever for Universal after Jurassic World ($24.3M, June 16, 2015).
