Welcome to the newest edition of r/BoxOffice Long Range Forecast.
We're making long range predictions for films, 4 weeks out from their premieres. You will predict the opening weekend, domestic total and worldwide gross of these films. These predictions will be open for 48 hours and the results will be polled to form a consensus and posted the next week.
So let's meet the two films for the week and analyze each pro and con.
Insidious: Out of the Further
The film is written and directed by Jacob Chase. It serves as a sequel to Insidious: The Red Door and is the sixth installment in the Insidious franchise. It stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Lin Shaye. The film follows Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter who discovers she can travel into The Further. Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: she doesn't just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world.
Mutiny
The film is directed by Jean-François Richet (Inner City, Assault on Precinct 13, Plane) and written by Lindsay Michel and J. P. Davis. It stars Jason Statham, Annabelle Wallis and Jason Wong. After witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’ death only to discover an international conspiracy.
Now that you met this week's new releases, let's look at some pros and cons.
PROS
The Insidious franchise has been very profitable, earning $731 million across five films. And it shows no sign of stopping, given that The Red Door became the highes-grossing installment at $189 million worldwide. Even with the lack of the Lamberts, the franchise has been pulling some great numbers with Chapter 3 and The Last Key. And the premise (a woman can bring people out of the Further into the real world) sounds intriguing. And with Evil Dead Burn disappointing and fading quickly, it could seize a starving horror audience looking for a film.
Jason Statham has built an audience by this point, so everyone knows what to expect from him. The plot is similar to all his films, but that's pretty much irrelevant: you come to see Jason Statham kick ass and you know what you're getting here. This can be a big attraction for the old male demographic, which has driven Statham's prior films.
CONS
The Insidious films have no good will in terms of reception. After the first film, every installment got poor reviews and audience reception has also dwindled. There is also the question of whether franchise fatigue will eventually catch up, given it's the sixth installment in 15 years. And as Evil Dead Burn proved, just because it's the only major horror title on the month doesn't mean audiences will drive big numbers.
Statham has a ceiling in terms of his action titles, given that they all look the same. A Working Man got to almost $100 million, but Shelter tapped out at $54 million. Lionsgate has yet to make a big marketing push here, and it could get lost despite the weak August slate.

The translation messed up the title as it's a literal translation of the 黒牢城 title in Japanese. The Samurai and the Prisoner, based on an award-winning mystery novel, is now Kiyoshi Kurosawa's, most known for Cure (1997) and not being related to Akira Kurosawa, best performing film to date.

Domestic Tuesday's Box Office by Domestic Total: Odyssey should pass Mando on Wednesday. It's only $14M behind. If it's a bad Wednesday, it'll pass Mando on Thursday for sure. It'll pass Prada 2 this weekend and Obsession next week.

Really shows how amazing Obsession did, as it'll take almost 1.5 weeks for Odyssey to pass it, which it should comfortably do well before Brand New Day comes out.
I'm rooting for Odyssey but also for Obsession. How many Odyssey days will it take to pass Obsession? 8-11? I'm willing to predict 9 at this point. Anything more would mean Odyssey is slightly slowing down. I think Odyssey will pass Obsession on Saturday.

For July blockbusters that opened in the same neighborhood as the Odyssey, it's well outperforming Superman ($354M) and still a bit behind Pirates 2: Dead Man's Chest ($423M). Pirates 2 had $169.5M it's first 5 days, ending on a Tuesday, vs. $163.7M for Odyssey.
The Nolan legs are kicking ass. Odyssey made $40.2M on Monday and Tuesday, days 4-5.
Deadpool 2 opened slightly higher than Odyssey at $125.5M but only made $24M it's first 2 weekdays vs. Odyssey's $40M. The Batman opened at $134M but only made $20.5 its first Monday and Tuesday. Odyssey might have the highest First Monday and Tuesday for a film that opened in its OW range. Suicide Squad opened at $133.7M but made $27.4M it's first 2 weekdays. Odyssey might have the highest (Monday + Tuesday):OW ratio ever. If that was an active metric on BO Mojo, I would not be surprised if Odyssey was at the top of that list. Nolan legs.

Christopher Nolan scored his best Tuesday ever at the domestic B.O. as The Odyssey rang up $21.4M. That bests his previous Tuesday high, which was The Dark Knight ($20.8M, on July 22, 2008). The revised number from Universal ranks as the second best Tuesday YTD behind Toy Story 5‘s $23.69M, and it’s the second best Tuesday ever for Universal after Jurassic World ($24.3M, June 16, 2015).

Hope: The movie crossed 2.5 million admits and $19 million, but it is certainly going to miss that 10 million admit breakeven point by a very large margin.
Minions and Monsters: A decent day, as the movie got north of $3 million. The bad news is that its chance of hitting 1 million admits is fading really fast. Being barely above Moana and Toy Story 5 is a bad sign for its legs.
Moana: An excellent Wednesday, as it was one of only three movies on the chart to increase from last week. The movie crossed 800k admits and will rock past $6 million tomorrow.
The Eyes: The movie dropped from last Wednesday and is still on track to miss breakeven.
Toy Story 5: Toy Story 5 had a very nice day, and the recovery should stay on track with an incredibly small drop tomorrow from last Thursday. 2.8 million admits and $20 million are coming this weekend.
Hive/Colony: A nice bounce-back day, as the film was starting to look dead.
Presales
Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Comps increased against Demon Slayer again. When I get home tomorrow, we are tossing Zootopia 2 and Wicked 2 for superhero comps.
