Help as a New Beatboxer

I've been a part of the beatboxing community for a long time. I'm super familiar with many different artists, different events, different YouTube channels, sounds, techniques, etc. I want to start developing my own pieces. My issue is that I hyper fixated on sounds, so I have what I'd consider a unique sound palette with almost no understanding of how to progress in combo development. I would say my sound palette is a kind of mixture of WING and Trung Bao, with some other weird textures in there. I definitely don't want to fill in the same niche of WING or Trung Bao, I wanna do my own thing. But, I know that one must walk before one can run, and I fear I haven't really taken any steps at all lol.

So, I call upon the power of the nerds of beatbox; pls help. Tell me your process, how should one git gud. Any resources you found helpful, any practicing schedules or techniques you prefer, any mistakes you made, any philosophies you have, I wanna hear it all.

so I think I’m doing chest or throat bass here but I’m not sure. Video link in comments. Please tell me if it’s horrible 🙏. Also wondering if there are any ways I can transition this into different basses. I can already do vocal chest bass and okay throat bass.

ZVD "Outside noise" cover.

Raw phone audio (with the bathroom buff). Please give me your honest opinions. I know it isn't even close to matching ZVD's level of sound quality and pitch accuracy, among other things, but I tried, mediocre as it may be, and I would like to hear what other people think about this.

What’s the most “complete” round in beatbox history?

Not just hype, I mean actually flawless on judging criteria — originality, tech, musicality, structure, no wasted bars. Is there a round the community agrees is basically unbeatable on paper? Drop your picks.

Thinking of hosting a beatbox battle in Florida, USA, sometime next year. Got tips?

Hi all...

Awhile back I asked in this subreddit if there was any beatbox community in Florida (the state, not the France) and y'all recommended I create the community myself if I wanted to see it evolve. Well, still haven't found the community here yet, and my work situation has just shifted around, giving me a lot more free time.......

You get the point. I'd love to put together my own beatbox event/comp here, probably early 2027 (just to give myself plenty of time to plan and prep). I've got a couple venues in mind already, but while I think about the back-end prep stuff, I thought it would be a good idea to ask the Experts of Reddit for advice on everything else I'm missing. Questions for you:

1. Do you think we could garner enough interest to actually bring people out to watch/participate? Any tips on how to market and promote it to make it as well-attended as possible?

2. How should I scope out the talent? Would you recommend making entries by wildcard submission only? Obviously I would want to have some nice cash prizes for the winners, but money doesn't always guarantee that the talent will turn up.

3. Any suggestions from a tech standpoint? I've hosted events before but never beatbox-specific. What should I be considering in terms of venue, sound equipment, microphones, etc? Looking for suggestions of specific beatbox-friendly mic/speaker specs, other sound set-up stuff, etc.

4. Any logistical stuff I should be considering? This includes who/how many people to have on my team, setting up the venue, and any other things I'd need to have in mind so the event not only Doesn't Completely Flop, but also that it really supports the artists and the audience in having a genuinely good and well-prepared time!

Thanks for any help I actually get from this post lol! Also, if you are a beatboxer or part of the community in any capacity and would want to collab and be part of the process on making something like this happen in any way, feel free to reach out. Bye now!

How did you all get into beatboxing?

How did you all get into beatboxing?

For me, it started when my brother showed me the Bataco vs Codfish battle. I instantly became a huge fan of Codfish, and after that my brother and I started learning beatboxing together through YouTube tutorials.

Over time, my brother stopped beatboxing, but I kept practicing and I'm still doing it today. 😂 Now whenever I beatbox, he just says, "Imagine beatboxing in 2026." I still enjoy it though.

What's your story? What got you into beatboxing?

I rebuilt my 2009 looper from scratch and I need help from beatboxers to test it

Hi everyone, Raphaël here, the developer of Everyday Looper :) !

Some of you might remember the original from the early App Store days (2009!). Over the years I kept getting messages from singers, beatboxers, and loop artists in general who never let go of it, and that convinced me to get back to work. So I've rebuilt it from the ground up for today's iPhones and iPads, and the beta is now open :D !

What's in this version:

  • 8 tracks you touch directly to mix, mute, merge, overdub, and more
  • Pretty decent echo cancellation, so you can actually loop through the speaker without headphones
  • Synced video capture of the take, straight from the app
  • Per track 10-level undo/redo, speed/reverse, and adaptive track lengths

The demo is by Ty Suite, a long-time Everyday Looper user. It was performed, recorded, and filmed entirely inside the beta on an iPhone, through the speaker, with no headphones.

You can test it here (free beta, iOS 17.7+):

https://testflight.apple.com/join/pz5ArsEg

I'd especially love feedback from beatboxers, since this isn't my area of expertise: what works, and what doesn't?

Happy to answer any questions here. Cheers !

Just played Marvel Rivals with one of the GOATS

Yooo!! I’m sorry I just had to share this with someone and no one I know will get it.

So I play Marvel Rivals after work and after a particularly hard day, this dude called Dr. Napom shows up in my team. Fully expecting it to be a non-beatbox reference, I asked if he follows beatbox and guess what, he rolled!! It was actually Napom!!Guys, it was epic!!

I spent the game fanboying and probably being an annoying idiot on voice chat! I sucked ahh cos I was so distracted! But, it definitely lifted my mood!!

Thank you Napom for being such a legend, you were so polite and you defo deserved MVP!!

Love you beatbox community!!

What was the old name of Bookie Blanco?

I remember that before he became Bookie Blanco, he used another name. Between Arthurban and Bookie Blanco, there was another name he used. Does anyone remember what it was? Or am I just tripping?

Normal Voice vs Throat Bass/Kargyraa vs Vibration Bass vs Vibration Bass w certain textures

Wanted to make a post to clarify an issue I'm seeing in videos regarding different basses. It seems like sometimes throat bass and vibration bass are conflated, and sometimes vibration bass and vibration bass with specific overtones are conflated, leading people (at least myself) to be very confused on what they're actually doing. My goal is to help clarify some of these discrepancies for new learners of the technique, and beatbox as a whole, as a lot of people are coming from hearing crazy bass sounds from wing and inertia and wanting to learn them.

The best way I can describe it is:

You have your normal voice

----one subharmonic down----

Throat Bass

Choose your texture:

More grovel, whistle overtone kargyraa style, more chest for deeper fuller tone, etc.

----subharmonic below throat bass----

Vibration Bass

Choose your texture:

Classic tongue going really forward like remix or Osis

Completely controlled and separate overtone like WING

High pitched completely separate overtone that rattles your head and feels like it's 100% through your nose

Inertia Style: As much power as possible regardless of consistency

Etc.

The main thing I think that has confused people is WING, cause he's cracked. So when people first saw Dopamine and heard the bass he used at the drop, they were like "damn his throat bass is cracked," but this isn't the case, he's even more cracked; that's higher pitched vibration bass (yes vibration bass can be pitched lol). Throat bass is kargyraa, which is just an overtone creating a subharmonic register. When people first learn it it's rather grovelly, but over time it smooths over, which is why Mongolian throat singing videos sound so clear. It's almost like the throat bass when first starting is getting some of the vibration bass vibration noise without the control, giving it the grovel.

This vibration bass is COMPLETELY different from what Remix teaches in his video guide on vibration bass (not a criticism or anything just trying to help clarify). Yes one needs to push harder on throat bass to get vibration bass, but after pushing, you can decide whether it has the Remix texture or some other texture. He uses a specific, more tongue forward texture, but this is NOT necessary for vibration bass. Vibration Bass is merely utilization of false vocal folds to create an overtone which results in a lower pitch.

This is, at least, what seems like the best way to talk about vibration bass, though one could argue the specific Remix/Osis texture is vibration bass, and that the overtone separately needs a different name. I think we just need to avoid calling every deep bass a throat bass or vibration bass randomly, as it gets confusing for learners of the technique.

Hope this helps some lost soul trying to understand wtf all the basses are from the few YouTube videos actually available on the subject lol

Cheers
