Oddly Specific 🎯 Flickering lights?

Just saw it in [r/Burnaby](r/Burnaby) and I did noticed my lights flickered at lease a dozen times in the past hour. Wondering if anyone else noticed?

Not sure if it’s too hot and everyone had their a/c on?

Edit: just found BC Hydro did issue a news post about high power usage due to hot weather: https://www.bchydro.com/news/press_centre/news_releases/2026/summer-electricity-demand.html

Food πŸ˜‹ I’m coming to Vancouver/Richmond to eat the best Chinese food in North America - Where should I go?

Hi folks, I’ve heard lots of people say Vancouver and the surrounding area have incredible Chinese (particularly Cantonese) food, and am headed out from NYC to try as many places as I can. Really just optimizing for food quality- if it’s out of the way and expensive and has horrible service, that’s okay.

I’ve done some initial research and have put together the following list. If you have any restaurant suggestions, dish suggestions at these restaurants, or think something on the list is merely decent and can be skipped, I’d love to hear it!

Dynasty Seafood Restaurant

Lanxuan

Ho Yuen Kee

Max Noodle House

Golden Paramount Seafood Restaurant

Mott 32

Chef’s Choice Seafood Restaurant

Yue Restaurant

Kirin Seafood Restaurant

Seaport City Restaurant

Empire Seafood Restaurant

Chef Tony Seafood Restaurant

Red Star Seafood Restaurant

Wang’s Shanghai Cuisine

On Lok Restaurant and Wonton House

Kwong Chow Congee & Noodle House

Green Lettuce

ChongQing

Fisherman’s Terrace

North Noodle House

Lanzhou Beef Noodles

Chili Pepper House

Joojak Restaurant

HK BBQ Master

Hei Hei Rice Roll

Pearl Castle Cafe

Memory Corner

Uncle Lu

Ho Yuen Cafe

Hao’s Lamb Restaurant

Anna’s Cake House (egg tart)

Maxim’s Bakery (egg tart)

Suggestions from this thread:

Dragon Wok

Chuihong

Old Xian's Noodle House

The Fish Man

Chili Pepper House

Xiang Chuan

Yummy Dumplings

Tin Tin Harbour Seafood Restaurant

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ How do you get through to Vancouverites?

I moved here from Toronto about a year ago, and I have struggled with moving past superficiality in my friendships. I am an extrovert, and have made lots of friends since my move, but I often feel like my warmth and effort are not acknowledge or reciprocated. It is very disheartening, and makes me doubt whether these friends will actually show up for me in my time of need. People have flaked on me, cancelled plans last minute, or not made any effort to make new plans. My friends are both, locals and immigrants, so I doubt that geography has anything to do with this. However, I do get a cold vibe from Vancouverites in general, and I wonder if I will ever be able to connect with them on a deeper level.

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Better way to start a life in Vancouver?

Sorry for my poor English. I am moving to Vancouver later this summer from China due to company business update, and a little bit nervous about future life here. I don't have any North America experience nor families or any familiar friends along with me, also my work will be fully remote so I don't expect to meet friends from my career. How usually locals meet friends or common-interests or join any local community here? Any advice or suggestion on starting better social life besides basic life assistance?

Like, My main interest in China is J-POP, and it used to be easy to attend some Japanese artist events or take a weekend travel to Japan (It will be hard to achieve this in China starting from 2026, but I believe it will only be even harder in Vancouver) and meet some local friends during event or travel. I might need to find some new ways of living to adapt to life here.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Mouse trap tips

Hey Van! Not sure if anyone is on the same boat but I’ve noticed a pretty big uptick in mice.

Unfortunately mice have started to come into my apartment and pretty alarmingly even during the day. They don’t seem to care about me (if I’m sitting quietly on the couch I can see them)

I have found success with peanut butter last winter but it now seems to not be doing the trick.

Any suggestions on what to put on the traps?

These guys seem to be spawning everywhere.

And yes I keep food locked away and no food left around the place.

Thank you in advance, I’m getting really tired of my place feeling β€œdirty”

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Any tips for finding an entry-level job in Vancouver?

Hi everyone,
I’m currently in Vancouver on a Working Holiday visa from Germany and I’m planning to stay for about a year.

I’ve recently started looking for a job and have been handing out my rΓ©sumΓ© in person as well as applying online. The problem is that I can barely find any places that are actually hiring. Most businesses tell me they aren’t looking for staff at the moment, even if they keep my rΓ©sumΓ© for the future.
I’ve seen a few cheap fast food chains advertising jobs, but apart from that it feels surprisingly difficult to find places that are actively hiring.
I did apply online for multiple Tim Hortons stores but I’m not sure if this will work.

Is this normal right now, or am I missing something?
Also, would you recommend looking outside of Downtown? I live a bit south of Downtown and I’m wondering if I’d have better luck applying around my local area instead of focusing on Downtown.

I’m open to pretty much anything: cafΓ©s, restaurants, retail, hotels, customer service, etc.
I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Hello!

I was wondering now that the twitter account for news 1130 is gone, does anyone know where I can get live traffic updates that isn't me looking at Google maps or on the news or radio?

Anyone have another social media account I can follow?

Thank you!

Food πŸ˜‹ Seasonal food in late November

We recently visited Vancouver and loved it. We were told at the time that world cup brought extra energy. Nonetheless, we have already booked a return trip for the last week of November. Now I just found out that many consider November to be a bad time to visit because of the weather. Even better, I can see Vancouver at its "worst." We loved the food in Vancouver and Richmond. So I wonder if there is any seasonal food that we should try in November. Thanks again.

Medical πŸ’‰ Spider bite?

Hi fellow Vancouverites - I was working in my garden last night and woke up to this injury this morning. I assume a spider got into one of my boots and got me when I was taking put the recycling before bed. Didn’t feel it until I started moving around and now it hurts like the dickens. I’ve taken a Claritin to see if the swelling comes down but what are your thoughts? I know some of you have had bites in the past but I haven’t - is this what they look like? Relevant as it took place in Vancouver.

Pic in comments.

Medical πŸ’‰ LTD claims in Vancouver - what to expect in general?

NOT ASKING FOR LEGAL ADVICE, just want to know more about how it works here.

Our family moved to Van from the US (Texas) about 15 years ago, and we’ve run into an unexpected but serious problem with LTD. We’ve all been Canadian citizens for a long time now - we work and pay taxes here - and recently my aunt suffered a serious spinal injury and is now going through the LTD-associated bureaucratic hell. I don't know what to expect. Before that my another relative (who already passed away) tried to apply for LTD in the US, but to no avail - rejection after rejection. Can anyone tell me what are realistic chances of getting your LTD claim approved in Canada? Sorry if this is a silly question, but we have absolutely no idea where to ask...

Oddly Specific 🎯 Teddy Ruxpin at Expo 86 Vancouver. Does anyone recall this or have any videos or pictures?

Hello im a huge archivalist for the animatronic talking toy known as Teddy Ruxpin. After hearing about teddy ruxpins involvement at Expo 86 in the "Californias" pavilion ive been on the lookout for footage and or photos of the giant teddy ruxpin that was said to be there. Ive been able to locate old news clippings claiming it to be there but no videos or photos of teddy ruxpin actually being at the event. At the Californias pavilion they did give out a very limited outfit for teddy ruxpin too.

If anyone has photos of the California pavilion that include Teddy Ruxpin please let me know. Id love to see them and hopefully archive them.

Thanks!

Travel πŸš— ✈ Why does the 10 bus have no a/c?

Pretty much every other bus I’ve been on has a/c, or good ventilation- I commute via the 10 bus the most ~45/1 hour journey each way every day and it’s awful in the summer especially rn just feel so humid. Is there a specific reason why this is the only bus route with this issue?
Not to be a complainer as it’s convenient and don’t have issues getting the bus itself, I just noticed, it’s my 2nd summer in Vancouver and noticed the same last year.

Thanks!!

Fashion and Beauty πŸ‘— Niche Boutiques to Sell New Clothing

Hello,

I've a small collection of women's clothing made from natural fabrics, that I curated from different brands. Some of it handcrafted, not mass-produced. Fashion that respects the hands that made it and the body that wears it. I only have a few pieces in each of the designs. Prices vary from $40-$120. Any recommendations of boutiques who might be interested?

Edit: These are everyday wear Linen blouses, sundress and two pieces.

Oddly Specific 🎯 ELI5 - wildfire smoke map time

Do people who are much smarter than I know, is this current time at the start? forecasted time? Do i take the time it has and minus 7 hours?

https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/

because when i click on it, it says 07/22/2026 0900 on the bottom left - but if that is UTC time, then that time has already happened?

I am looking at how bad the smoke will get for the rest of the day

Housing and Moving 🏑 What are your opinions on Reside Property Management? Wondering if having a tenancy lease with them would be a good experience

Reside Management has already shown us a few rental listings. None that we were quite interested in yet. But there is one we might like. Just wondering if anyone has had good or bad experiences with them as a tenant.

Any tips or stories would be helpful for us to make an informed decision.
