After last night's Amber Alert that was sent as a critical alert instead of an actual Amber Alert, I'm looking for a solution where I can receive an alert for a critical alert that's not an Amber Alert. I've installed the Alertable App on my phone and I'm looking at the settings. There's an "Override Silent Mode" option that if turned on will sound critical alerts even if the volume is off. However, if an Amber Alert is incorrectly sent as a critical alert, it seems like I would still get the alert - is that correct?

Any other ideas of how not to be woken up by an emergency alert unless it's actually important?

I moved here from Toronto about a year ago, and I have struggled with moving past superficiality in my friendships. I am an extrovert, and have made lots of friends since my move, but I often feel like my warmth and effort are not acknowledge or reciprocated. It is very disheartening, and makes me doubt whether these friends will actually show up for me in my time of need. People have flaked on me, cancelled plans last minute, or not made any effort to make new plans. My friends are both, locals and immigrants, so I doubt that geography has anything to do with this. However, I do get a cold vibe from Vancouverites in general, and I wonder if I will ever be able to connect with them on a deeper level.

I’m currently in Vancouver on a Working Holiday visa from Germany and I’m planning to stay for about a year.

I’ve recently started looking for a job and have been handing out my résumé in person as well as applying online. The problem is that I can barely find any places that are actually hiring. Most businesses tell me they aren’t looking for staff at the moment, even if they keep my résumé for the future.
I’ve seen a few cheap fast food chains advertising jobs, but apart from that it feels surprisingly difficult to find places that are actively hiring.
I did apply online for multiple Tim Hortons stores but I’m not sure if this will work.

Is this normal right now, or am I missing something?
Also, would you recommend looking outside of Downtown? I live a bit south of Downtown and I’m wondering if I’d have better luck applying around my local area instead of focusing on Downtown.

I’m open to pretty much anything: cafés, restaurants, retail, hotels, customer service, etc.
I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I am particularly hoping to find someone who understands and can help with scapegoating dynamics and triangulation within the family. If they have personal experience of this so much the better. I've looked all over at the usual sites RCC &. Psychology Today etc but can't find someone who's explicitly specialises in this area. I am willing to pay psychologist rates as opposed to counsellor rates. Can anyone reccomend someone? Thank you!

Our family moved to Van from the US (Texas) about 15 years ago, and we’ve run into an unexpected but serious problem with LTD. We’ve all been Canadian citizens for a long time now - we work and pay taxes here - and recently my aunt suffered a serious spinal injury and is now going through the LTD-associated bureaucratic hell. I don't know what to expect. Before that my another relative (who already passed away) tried to apply for LTD in the US, but to no avail - rejection after rejection. Can anyone tell me what are realistic chances of getting your LTD claim approved in Canada? Sorry if this is a silly question, but we have absolutely no idea where to ask...

We earn resonable money as doctors, so if there is any that is more suited to this, that would preferable.

I'm visiting from Montreal and got a membership based on a friend's recommendation. I'm just shocked by the pricing of it. We have Communauto as our drive share service and it's so much cheaper. Ours is 5-15$ an hour depending on the tier of membership.

Any optical shops that can help me fit new prescription lenses to those frames ? I got my latest eye test done at Specsavers but they said they can't retrofit old frames for some reason.

I am visiting Van for about a week, and one thing I love to do is ask locals places they like to go/see/do. I was talking to some of the workers up at The Shed and got some great recommendations. I've looked through a lot of suggestions on here but seeing if there's anything else that's maybe not so well known.

I'm no stranger to the city as I've been coming here quite often, but wanted to see if there's any other underrated spots to go to, to see, things to do.

In general, I'm an avid hiker, but willing to put down a good slice of pizza/bowl of ramen/plate of pasta/as many dolma as I can fit in my mouth. Museums and book stores are always a pleasure to visit as well. And if it's weird, I'm in. I'm super fluid so I don't need to stay in the city or the direct surroundings.

Would love to hear any suggestions!

And if I can't get to this trip, you're damn certain I'll come back to try!

Hi fellow Vancouverites - I was working in my garden last night and woke up to this injury this morning. I assume a spider got into one of my boots and got me when I was taking put the recycling before bed. Didn’t feel it until I started moving around and now it hurts like the dickens. I’ve taken a Claritin to see if the swelling comes down but what are your thoughts? I know some of you have had bites in the past but I haven’t - is this what they look like? Relevant as it took place in Vancouver.

We recently visited Vancouver and loved it. We were told at the time that world cup brought extra energy. Nonetheless, we have already booked a return trip for the last week of November. Now I just found out that many consider November to be a bad time to visit because of the weather. Even better, I can see Vancouver at its "worst." We loved the food in Vancouver and Richmond. So I wonder if there is any seasonal food that we should try in November. Thanks again.
