Do I have this air filter set up correctly facing up?

Two brand new Carrier infinity units and still this chattering during AC startup. Last 2-15 seconds and seems to be loudest at the air handler.

Water pours out of at least 5 to 6 different points in this HVAC system about once a day around three in the afternoon. They have checked the drain pipe and say that it is not clogged. The filter has been cleaned. It’s not super humid where we are. it is a bakery kitchen.

I wanted some input on whether or not the prices I am being charged are fair. This is for a rental property and I don’t live in the area. I was recommended an HVAC tech who could do some work for me on the side. I feel like his prices are lower than if I just called a random company but they seem a little high to me. I just want to be sure I am not being taken advantage of. This is in North/Central Florida.

The unit is original with the home so it’s about 20/25 years old but in relatively good condition. New tenants moved in and said the unit was not cooling the house properly. They set it to 72 but it wouldn’t get below 76. So I called this guy.

He said the blower motor was bad and needed replacing, the capacitor was low, the coolant was low, and the condenser coils could use cleaning. He was upfront and said the only thing I NEEDED was the blower motor and the rest could wait but since it’s old and if I wanted to do everything I could to try and get the most life out of it, he would recommend doing the other things as well.

He replaced the blower motor, the capacitor, added 2 pounds of R22, and cleaned the condenser coils and charged $750. He originally wanted $880 but we negotiated down to $750.

He also said that if the unit dies within a year he would subtract this price I paid from the cost of installing a new unit.

We spoke about adding a soft starter and he said that would be $175 if I wanted just to protect the unit and increase the lifespan (I ultimately declined).

Some of his other prices: on another unit that was about 5 years old where the compressor overheated he charged me $520 to add a soft start and capacitor.

He has also quoted me a whole system install for a 1500 square foot home a 3 ton heat system for $7,750 (the brand was a carrier owned brand but not carrier. He said it was the same just not labeled carrier).

So, how are these prices? Are they good deals or is he taking advantage of me?

My dad does a lot of repairs himself and he said the blower motor is either good or it’s not and it can’t be “failing” like this tech told me so I am not sure who to believe.

I have a water leak coming from my down flow York air handler. Small amounts of water leave the air handler where the gas freon enters the handler. Should I open up the right side of the air handler to see why this is happening?

I’m 18 months into my first home. The sellers added a 24 month home warranty instead of replacing the 24 year old HVAC. Fine, we love the house. Of course, we’ve had trouble with the thing on a regular basis. Every time there’s an issue, the warranty company charges us 80$ and sends out the their preferred contractor to put a band-aid on it. It got to the point where I’d hire someone to diagnose it and only then can the warranty company so that I could verify their story.

Well, a month ago my air conditioning went out during a heat wave. I call an independent to diagnose, turns out my old-ass air conditioner has a leak. The outside cables are frozen, definitely a leak. The independent tells me the thing needs replaced, even if they wanted to repair it, the unit takes R22 which they don’t make anymore. So, armed with this info I call the warranty company, and they send their guys out, who proceed to put a bunch of R422B in my system. Thankfully I have it all on camera. I didn’t complain at the time because I know nothing about HVAC and figured my system must’ve been retrofitted at some point. For context, they didn’t even find the leak as there must be “two refrigerant incidents before the warranty company will allow us to find the leak”.

Fast forward to this week, my house hasn’t been hitting the thermostat temp consistently. I’m keeping it above comfortable room temp, the AC is always well above (unless it’s a cool day). I call the warranty guys and tell them there’s still an issue, they charge me anyway. I tell them I want a different contractor. They send a new contractor, much more professional, he tells me my coil needs cleaned and that my system is not retrofitted. I tell him what happened with the previous contractor and he lets me know it’s a problem that should be fixed.

I send the warranty company my evidence and they go radio silent but go ahead and authorize repairs by the new guy AND try and send the shitty R422B guys back to “fix their mistake”. Keep in mind they don’t tell me what they’re going to do— I assume because they don’t know or want to know. As I see it, the only thing that can be done is draining my system, finding the leak, fixing it, and either retrofitting or using R22 to charge my system back up. The warranty agents don’t seem to have the time or inclination to understand, and they insist I must let the shady contractors back to remedy the issue, which I will not allow.

Does anyone have a similar story? Can anyone advise me as to how I can get a good outcome here?

I live in socal where summer is just kicking off. My wall unit was just replaced end of April, so this is only my third time using it. The first time I used it last week, it was crispy cool & the room felt good. It didn’t extend all the way to my kitchen (open concept kitchen/living room situation) but the living room side cooled down noticeably. Yesterday & today, though, I’m feeling almost nothing. The air is cool when I stand right up against it, but once I’m 2-3 feet away I can only feel the cool when my tower fan pushes it onto me. If the tower fan is off, I feel almost nothing.

I understand it’s just hot out & if that’s just it then fine. I will say, though, that my old wall unit did not have this problem. The entire kitchen/living room could be noticeably cooled. So I figured I’d ask if I should just reset my expectations w this new unit before I submit a maintenance request.

I have a Carrier Infinity heat pump system.

I received a code 84 High Pressure lockout signal. I noticed the condenser cooling fan was not running. Technician looked at it and said probably the fan motor was bad. He suggested getting a whole new unit. (This one is 10 years old). He also said he could replace the fan motor and order a new defrost board as a backup.

I put a heavy duty fan blowing on the side of the outdoor condenser assembly. A few minutes later the heat pump was running and the condenser cooling fan was also running! Any thoughts?

I have a Rheem water heater that's only 3 years old. A few months ago it started to send me this message:
"An issue has been detected with your Heat Pump Water Heater Gen 5 named Heat Pump Water Heater located in Home: T005 Heating source defaults to elements due to low airflow. If issue persists, please contact Rheem Tech Support 1-800-995-0982 or your local plumbing professional. Reference Alarm Code T005."

There's not much stuff next to it so it should have enough space. The filter looks clean, and I cleaned it anyway just to make sure. Still I receive such message every day. Any advice what I can do about this, please?

I’m trying to replace a dead motor in my heat recovery ventilation unit. I did take out one fan, but I’m having a tough time taking the other fan out. I can’t access that 3mm as it’s seated deep inside. Is there a way of taking this out that I’m missing? Also, are there any places that sell the whole assembly so I can replace the whole motor and the fans? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have been given a quote of $500 to clean the air handler in the crawlspace under my 1350 sq. ft. house in South Carolina. New unit was installed in 2020. Is this price reasonable? And how often should it be cleaned? Thanks!

From what everyone is saying, I should change the air filter monthly and have a go at cleaning my outer unit first (myself, thanks to YouTube) before shelling out $500 for cleaning the air handler. Have I got that right?

A family member is upsizing their AC and has offered this unit to me.

My current AC unit is a Amana. Probably 20+ years old. Likely installed the same time as my furnace in 2001. All the labels and stickers are weathered and unreadable.

My house is a cape cod (1.5storey) 1100sqft.

Any problems with this air con? Should I have it installed.

I am looking for a thru wall ac unit that fits what seems like a non standard size sleeve. The sleeve is 24” wide x 14 3/8 tall. The old unit was already removed so I don’t know what was there before. It seems like they are all designed to fit a 26” wide sleeve.

I’m considering installing a new central AC system for my home in Saratoga County and recently received a quote from a firm I was considering for around $8,500. Before moving forward, I’d like to know if that sounds reasonable for the area.

For anyone who has replaced or installed central air recently, how much did your project cost? I’m very curious how much factors like size, efficiency rating, brand, ductwork, permits, and installation complexity affected the final price.

Are there any questions I should ask the HVAC contractor before signing the agreement? I’d appreciate any advice or experiences you can share. 

Is this overkill? We've just gone through the worst of the heat we get around here, max temps around 90° and feel like 110°F we've been renovating our newly purchased house and of course the ac that passed inspections died 2 days after closing. We've been using an older window AC my dad had lying around and to be honest it's been doing a fair job of keeping the main part of the house comfortable as long as we keep it running. The house is heavily shaded, but it is an older 1960s house. The windows are double hung.

I feel like 2.5 tons is overkill considering that's what my MiL just had put in her 2,200 sqft house that was built in 1970. On top of that she just paid $9k for the new AC and furnace to purchase and install but I'm being quoted $7k just for the ac and install. We both have crawl spaces the only difference is hers is accessed through the house and ours is accessed outside.

So I went up into the attic in the house we’ve lived for a few months and noticed this. I figured it was installed incorrectly so I wanted to confirm here. The float detector is on the outside of the drip pan? 🤔 I went ahead and corrected it but let me know if I’m in the wrong.
