Any idea why the leave stems are twisted. White stuff in the twisted stem balls.

Crabapple 'Adirondack' leaves and root flare

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Hello all,

Would you be able to help identify the disease on this tree's leaves? The tree is a young crabapple of the 'Adirondack' variety. Most of the leaves seem okay, it's just a handful that stood out to me that had those brown spots, and a small leaf or two had yellowed. It'd also be helpful to know how serious the disease is in practice - can the tree fight it on its own in good growing conditions? Returning it to the nursery would be complicated for several reasons, so we'd rather avoid that unless absolutely necessary.

Also, another important question I have is about the root flare. Are those visible roots adventitious roots, or does it look like there is some actual root flare showing there, too?

Location is Northern Europe.

Thank you in advance.

Finish cut on poor compartmentalizers.

Upvotes

On trees that don't do a great job at compartmentalizing decay(silver maple comes to mind), is it best practice to leave a slightly longer 'stub' on your finish cut? Would this additional wood help the tree seal off that wound and prevent decay form moving closer to the trunk?

Magnolia tree pruning help

Upvotes

Hello! This magnolia tree is about 3 years old. I want it to be a single trunk tree but am unsure of how to achieve that. This tree was planted with my grandmothers ashes so I really don’t want to hurt it in anyway. Any help pruning or otherwise would be appreciated!!

Is my Ginkgo tree okay?

This is the third year I've had this tree and am starting to get a bit concerned, mainly due to the condition of the leaves. In one of the attached pictures you can see he is growing up and out but it just doesn't appear happy if that makes sense. Any advice is appreciated.

What’s happening to this Photinia?

Post image
Upvotes

Middle of three photinias (I think?) suddenly started looking like this. I did some pruning to all three just after the spring bloom to let some light in the canopy, with the end goal of reducing the amount of overhang over the yard in a few seasons.

I noticed the middle photinia started looking odd last week. For context, I sprayed some 2-4d on the yard about a month ago to prep for over seeding in the fall, but was very cautious about over spray. No other plant has had a similar change.

Peach borer prognosis

Thumbnail gallery

My chokecherry tree looks to have peach borer damage. I found several empty pupas at the base, and the leaves suddenly became curled and crispy in the last couple of weeks. I’ve sprayed the base with permethrin, but I’m worried it is a lost cause. Any advice?

What do I do with my Ginkgo?

Post image

Location: Tooele, UT. Planted it about a year ago. A late frost was making it look really sad this spring so we fertilized it, it grew way too many leaves and became really top heavy and ended up snapping in half. This basal stem popped up. Is it going to survive? Anything we should be doing to help it?

Trim a spiny crepe myrtle tree without killing it?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Is there a way to trim back this crepe myrtle without killing it? It's been here for nearly 30 years and the trees around it shade it. There are four in the back yard in similar states and I'd love not to have to remove them since they've been here for so long. They don't get 6 hours of full sun but they green up every year. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Does this looked trimmed properly or can there be more done?

Had some light trimming done to lower branches and some that overhang the house and sidewalk. How does it look?

Moving a loquat

This is my loquat, grown from a cutting of a 20 year old tree taken roughly 3 years ago. It currently stands at around 7 feet tall and is healthy.

We are planning on building a house and are getting our home ready to list. I would very much like to take this with me. The current plan is to dig it up, plant it at a friend's home for the next year-ish while our home is being built and we're ready to dig it up and plant it again.

How successful do you guys think this will be? Any advice about how to do this properly?

Help with new Crab Apple Tree

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi All- hoping someone can help me diagnose / save a newly planted Crab Apple tree. It was planted in early June, zone 6, and immediately started dropping leaves. I think my watering has been consistent - never swampy, a good soak when the top inch or two is dry, root flare seems good. Any thoughts? Appreciate any help!

Hoping for help for my tree

There is some evidence of lantern fly eggs all over it each year, and then the black moldish substance I’ve heard comes from those pests. Now there appears to be some holes strategically all over as well and some other issues as well. Not sure if it’s a woodpecker or what!

What is snacking on my young birch trees? Possible culprit included.

Thumbnail gallery

I planted these trees in May and have noticed leaf damage on each of them, handful of leaves per tree.

I found the guy pictured in photo number theee on one of the unaffected leaves. Looks like a Japanese beetle? From my research, the holes he would make in the leaf doesn't match what I'm seeing though.

Either way - best way to treat this and prevent it going forward? Trees seem otherwise healthy and have been growing quite quick.

Pretty sure I need to trim these

We recently moved into a house and this is one of the trees in the back yard. The area around the trunk was originally heavily covered in soil and plants which we removed.

I’m pretty sure I need to trim these down/remove them. I’m just wondering two things: 1. Best time of year to do it and 2. Best method.

Moving into a 100+ year old house is expensive so we don’t have the $$ to hire a professional on this one - the “professional money” is going to fix things that would burn down the house if we tried to DIY it.
