Is Zwift just harder than real life?

Hey all, got my Zwift 1-2 months ago and shortly after got a Canyon bike.

When I use my Zwift it feels significantly harder than outside.

Outside I can do 90k without feeling broken but on the Zwift I do 30k and feel totally drained.

A friend of mine who has way more experience at cycling told me that it sounds like something is wrong as the estimated FTP from the Zwift is a good bit lower than way I experience outside.

I have entered my correct height and weight, I use clipless etc. but for some reason it feels significantly harder.

Do you have any experience with this?

Thank u !!

New to virtual shifting

Post image
4 Upvotes

When Zwift sent out the US$10 deal for the Cog and Click I decided to give virtual shifting a try. I use an older Specialized Roubaix as my dedicated indoor bike. Elite Justo trainer. Removed the 2x11 groupset and installed the single speed setup. Wolftooth 42T chain ring and 18T Zwift Cog and Tanke chain tensioner. Done four Zwift rides with the setup and I am liking the smooth and quiet use. Find for Zwift I am using virtual gears 8 - 20 to keep cadence around 80. I use 100% Trainer Difficulty.

Technical help Help getting started.

Upvotes

Hi there. Fairly avid cycler here, mostly gravel and mountain, looking to get into zwift for our long canadian winters. I’m starting from scratch (currently have a Kaiser spin bike, but I’ll sell that) and looking for some help designing a decent set up in my home gym.

My budget is probably around $3k CAD somewhat flexible. I’m thinking of getting the Zwift Ride as I’d like it to remain set up, easy to use and interchangeable for me and my wife.

My main question is what do I use to run zwift? I’d like to have two wall mounted screens in front of the bike, one for zwift and one to stream tv.

I’s appreciate any advice about how best to run zwift or any other advice you have. I’m starting from scratch so id like to get it right the first time.

Thank you.

Hardware Missing Handlebar Clamp

Upvotes

I scored a zwift ride and kickr core 2 with cog for an incredible deal on Facebook Marketplace. I can't really complain about anything because it was so cheap, but it was missing the handlebars and most importantly the handlebar clamp that attaches the handlebar to the ride. I figured I can just find a cheap handlebar somewhere but I would still need to be able to attach it somehow. I reached out to Zwift but they refused to send only the clamp and I would have to pay for the whole handlebar assembly which is a lot of money. Curious if anyone has any ideas? I have a 3d printer so maybe I'll try to make something with that, but not too sure how I'll handle the tightening aspect of it. Thanks!

Discussion New Business: Rent out Assioma pedals to calibrate Zwift setups?

Okay, this is mostly tongue-in-cheek but given the number of posts about "my power feels off", it seems like people need a way to verify that their trainer is providing the right resistance/recording the right power to/from the rider.

Since nobody knows if it's just a perception thing for a newbie users or if there is indeed something wrong in the setup, we need a way to independently verify power. Enter the Assiomas.

Realistically, I'm not sure what the damage/return rate would be and whether you could actually make any money on this but it seems like someone could send out a single sided version of the pedals for say, $50 for a week and it would allow the user to know one way or another what's going on - or at least be able to blame the trainer or not.

Any Venture Capitalists out there want to go in on this with me?

Zwift on ipad M2 vs M4

Hi!
I have both an ipad M2 and an M4. On the M4 I noticed I have shadows for bikes, while on the M2 that's not happening and graphics are overal slightlyl worse. From what I read on a few release notes, shadows should be shown also on the M2. Did anyone else notice this?

New to Zwift - FTP builder too high?

Hi all,

I just started with Zwift. What a great way to workout and improve my fitness level. I just did FTP ramp and got a score of 248 with ~85kg. Im trying to improve so I am following the FTP builder for 6 weeks now.

This morning I did the foundation training which focusses on zone 2 training. My heartrate during this session however is in zone 3 and a bit too high i guess. Average around 135.

Is my FTP too high, or should I just continue and will my heartrate decrease by time?

Finally cracked an hour. Started off as a Z2 workout and about halfway through on turn 10 I started getting a hunch I might be on track to do it so upped the pacing a few beats. What a good feeling. This is with usually 1 stationary bike workout/week but plenty of other endurance 5-6 days/week.

Beginner races?

I want to race against other beginners just for fitness really, I joined a race called evo sprint cc or something and I couldn't pick the lowest category since my race score was too high for some reason (I've never raced and only been on the bike twice).

I got smoked right out the gates, they were doing 300-400w for like 5 minutes and by then I was dropped and to make matters worse it was some map where you just ride in circles so as they could ride in a pelaton and I was alone they just lapped me again and again. I tried to hang on but they quickly dropped me, they were pushing 200-250w average and that was the lowest race I could find.

Did I pick the wrong kind of race or is this the lowest bar of entry?

Discussion Zwift riders, your support is needed: Academic survey on professional road cycling fans

Hello everyone,

I am currently conducting an anonymous survey for my bachelor’s thesis in Sports Management about fans of professional road cycling.

The aim is to identify different types of fans based on their motivations, fan behaviour, connection to the sport and their own cycling activity. Since many Zwift riders also follow professional road racing, your perspectives could be particularly valuable for the study.

If you follow professional road cycling, I would greatly appreciate your support. The survey takes just under five minutes on average.

English survey:

https://nilsbrinsmead.limesurvey.net/cyclingfans?lang=en

German survey:

https://nilsbrinsmead.limesurvey.net/cyclingfans?lang=de

The survey will remain open until Saturday, 25 July. It does not matter how closely or regularly you follow professional cycling.

The study is an independent academic project. It has not been commissioned, funded or influenced by my employer. Neither the individual responses nor the results will be used commercially.

Every additional response would help me greatly. I would also appreciate it if you shared the survey with other professional road cycling fans.

Once the thesis is completed, I would be happy to share a summary of the aggregated results and the identified fan types.

Thank you very much for your support!

Cheers,

Nils

Discussion Pulling Trigger on a Zwift Ride

I've been using a 2001 Specialized Roubaix on a Wahoo KICKR Core 1 Smart Trainer because I really don't want to use my primary bike. However, the Roubaix is showing its age, so I can either spend $300 to rebuild some stuff or spend more money and get the Zwift Ride Smart Frame to go on it.

I've pretty much decided on getting the Zwift Ride, but wanted to make sure there was nothing I needed to know beforehand. There is no planned upgrade anytime soon, I hope? I know the frame could go on sale around black Friday, but I really don't want to wait, and won't be needing the bundle.

I do plan to get the tablet extension accessory. But any other thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated!

Hardware Did you switch out your Wahoo trainer?

I found out the v5 isn't compatible with the digital shifting, so I'm stuck with manual shifting and my derailleur is not happy

Have any of you given up on your v5 or did you learn to deal with it?

TBH, I've been riding Zwift since COVID, so digital shifting would be new for me anyway.

FTP Increase Now I understand why Leg strength is important. Maybe I should have listened to my peers ages ago.

Post image

I’ve massively neglected my strength training in the past, mainly because I hated having DOMS and not being able to get on the bike but since I’m over that curve now, man what a difference. My endurance hasn’t really changed massively but on climbs and threshold rides, I feel like I’m able to just sustain much longer efforts without dying. Over the moon with the direction of my fitness at the moment.

Why Zwift on Windows is a piece of sh*t!

I don't get it, you guys acquired Rouvy, go there and learn a fking thing!

I have been using zwift on almost all the platforms without a glitch. Then I moved my setup to a gaming PC and been using Rouvy since then had few issues related to zwift controller and HR monitor, but all sorted after they updated it once acquired by zwift. There was zero performance related issues. Now I start using the zwift from this month and it's a day and night difference.

  1. It takes forever to load, initial loading as well as ride-start loading, like a full scale AAA game!

  2. I use multiple monitors and if a zwift is open on one, you can't do anything on the other. A click outside, on the other screen, minimises zwift. Solution offered - use zwift windowed mode. U guys serious? Never had an issue with Rouvy running on one screen and watching movie on the other.

  3. This is a deal breaker for me. When deep into a workout with ERG mode ON, it turns off randomly. I have to pickup the gears manually to reactivate ERG. Facing this issue multiple times so far. That's just frustrating. Rouvy on windows is breeze to ride. Zwift on the other hand is a nightmare.

Do something guys, get your sh*t together! Update the zwift app on windows OR move your app to rouvy on windows OR make the subscription interchangeable

Technical help Zwift and Garmin distances have diverged: why?

First, here's my gear:

Head unit: Garmin 830
Rear Hub: Cycleops G2 Hub
Pedals: Garmin X220
Trainer: Yahoo Kickr Snap

I like riding Zwift (despite the bugs). I've been pushing harder on my failing health lately, so I'm spending more time looking at my numbers than ever. 56 now, I've been riding road bikes "seriously" since I was about 14.

A few days ago, Zwift on my laptop wouldn't detect my trainer. I'm not positive what fixed it, but I disconnected the trainer from power for a few minutes, and connected with it from the Wahoo app on my phone for the first time in ... well, a long time. That fixed it up; I could connect from my laptop again.

After that, the distance recorded by my Garmin head unit hasn't been quite right. Before the reconnect incident, the Garmin was recording approximately the same distance that the in-game route had in Zwift. After it, it's about 15% low ... sometimes worse.

I know that the zwift distance is an imaginary number from an imaginary world, computed based on my input weight and power and the frame and wheel choice in Zwift, and drafting and so on. But the numbers were quite close, and were close for a very long time. What happened in that connection reset to knock them out? And if the trainer is adapting resistance for the course, and being moved by my power, why shouldn't they be pretty close?

Here's the actual data:

Clipless Pedals and Shoes

I intend to purchase the Zwift Ride and fell that it’s time I purchase clipless pedals and shoes. Should I be looking at roadie shoes or xc shoes? I’m only considering xc shoes bc it might also be the perfect time to also go clipless on my Pivot Switchblade MTB.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks!

What halo bikes do you hope will be added?

Cervelo has plenty of options, the classic P3C, the P5X, the Barrachi. Same with Trek. The 5500 (the Lance Postal Trek - ok, maybe not), the Y-frame, the original 904. Canyon has a couple, the new Predict and the EcoSpeed. BMC has the Impec, Giant could do the MCR, Scott had a couple cool Plasma concepts.

Personally I'd love Felt to have the TA/FRD and do some track racing in Zwift.

Clipless pedal or not

I have a old gravel bike on a jet black Victory. Started indoor training 1 month ago and enjoying it so far. Around 340 racing score for now.

I am not convinced to add clipless pedal to my setup. I think they are useful for safety outside, not slipping, etc. But I fail to see the benefit of using that inside? Also not convinced they give power increase after the GCN comparison on road, it is marginal. Why do you guys use them? Trying to see the opposite side arguments, thanks!
