Must-have Online Fire Info Points

In case anybody needed to see this, the NWT Fire facebook group has been posting diligent and critical updates constantly. As well, there is an online Live Fire Map with ongoing perimeter updates.

I still use firesmoke.ca to get an idea of the wind forecast but I find they purge the perimeter of the existing fires too fast, where the other interactive fire map above is cleaner and more detailed.

Stay safe everybody.

Will the feds prop it up? Will the territory crumble?

What are your thoughts on what's to come?

Looking for Pagan community

Moved back to Yellowknife and now I’m wondering if there is (or not) a pagan community up here? I’m an eclectic pagan and wondering if there are meet ups or is this more of a solitary path up here.

Pants recommendations

Hi all! I am from Mexico and it is my first time traveling to Yellowknife to see northern lights! This is also my first time seeing snow, so I am bit intrigued by how cold is the weather up there.

I was watching some videos on how to dress for those kind of places and for the pants they recommend doing the base layer, then a fleece layer and lastly a soft shell, but they say I might want to get an additional layer for water resistance. How many layers do I really need?!

I am a bit confused with all this info, a point of view from someone with more experience is much appreciated!

PS we are traveling the first 2 weeks of October and we are also doing Vancouver/Calgary, so if I could reuse some of the gear it would be perfect!

Recommendations for prescription eyeglasses in YK

The time has come when I need glasses for driving. There are 2 optical stores in town that seem to fit. I have health insurance, so I think its 600$ max. Could that work at these stores? Which shop do people recommend?

Thank you.

Month long stay in Yellowknife

I've just come back to Canada after a year of being abroad, I have a remote job and nothing tying me down to where I am right now (Ontario) and I wanna travel as much as I can in the meantime

How's Yellowknife like for someone in their late 20s/early 30s - I don't expect to make it a permanent home but would love to come up north and experience it for a month or so

Hi all,

I’m Anishinaabe from the south visiting the area for a conference — I was curious if there’s any young Indigenous person/people who want to spend time showing me around! I have some cool things from my home to trade for your time

I know that Mahsi Cho is nearby and I definitely want to check that out before I leave but I would love to see more of the land. I’m only here for 5 days but I’m so grateful to be here, this place is truly special 🌱💗

Miigwech! Message me so we can exchange socials :)

How is it here?

I am currently from the USA, and am looking at a conservatorship job with the Government of Northwest Territories in the museum system in Yellowknife. It is around 126K a year, with the governmental benefits, but i would like to ask the locals as to how it is in that area of Canada, and if the 6 figures is more of a honeypot than what is really there. Thanks for any and all information.

Variety of meats in Yellowknife

I know it'll sound silly, but do we have beef liver here as an option? I've been to (I think) all grocery stores and no luck yet. I reaaaally miss it, just sucks that I have to supplement iron because of that.

Hidden Gems

Hi you gorgeous humans!
My husband and I are in town for the first time and are looking for hidden gems of things to do. Most of the suggestions we have been given aurora based or fishing based and whilst I love a good adventure, fishing ain’t it. 😂
We have a car and are up for (almost) anything.
Bonus points if there are Indigenous communities we can support whilst here.

French Classes?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone had any leads on private french tutors/classes in the city. I know College Nordique offers classes but unfortunately it doesn’t fit with my schedule and I prefer working 1-on-1. I’ve tried searching for a french tutor online this past month as well but haven’t had much luck. I can only pay for so much trial classes lol.

Would appreciate any recs! Thank you.

Fishing Tours

A group of 5 girls is coming up for a bachelorette party this summer, and we’re looking for recommendations for a full day fishing charter. We’d love a fun, beginner-friendly guide with a great local reputation. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Camping gear rentals?

Are there any shops that rent out sleeping bags, pads, and camp stoves in Yellowknife? 🏕️

I'm spending a few weeks in & around Yellowknife in July, and camping for a portion of that. I'll be traveling with my tent but hoping to rent the rest of the gear on arrival. Thanks in advance!

Working at Stanton Territorial Hospital?

Hello, using a throwaway account as I’ve got an offer for a job at STH nursing in the ICU. I’m currently in Toronto and super interested in visiting/living in Yellowknife for a bit! I’m wondering if there’s anyone who could give me some firsthand info about working at STH or in the ICU there? I understand it’s not going to be like downtown Toronto and it will be frigid when I come (January) but would just like some more info regarding what shifts are like, work culture, patient population etc.

Extra info on places to try/visit in the winter months also appreciated! Got some ideas already but want to make the most of my time!
