Squadron Coms update — finally cracked it, all 4 wingman voice states working

Quick followup to my earlier post, after a lot of debugging, Squadron Coms is fully working now.

All four states fire correctly: order acknowledgment, kill confirmation, combat chatter (reacts to real hits, not a timer), and recall.

The satisfying part: acknowledgment worked from day one, but the other three stayed dead silent with zero errors, turned out the mod's setup cue only runs once ever per save, and it had already "completed" back when it only knew about acknowledgment. Every feature added after that never got initialized in my existing save, since a completed one-shot cue doesn't re-run just because the script changed. Found X4's built-in versioned-patch system (same thing vanilla uses to backfill old saves) and it clicked into place immediately.

Also fixed two real bugs from live testing: wingmen tracking a friendly ship if one got accidentally targeted (false combat chatter, no enemy around), and player actions occasionally getting talked over by ambient chatter — now acknowledgment/kill/recall always take priority.

Still needs testing but give me your honest thought please.

ELI5: What are the different ship weapons actually good for?

I've played this game for years, but my ADHD brain refuses to latch onto raw stat comparisons, so I've just defaulted to Pulse Lasers on everything and focused on building my economy instead. It actually felt like a breakthrough when I realized how useful the Ion Blaster was in making other pilots bail: it drops them out of Travel Drive, brings down their shields, but won't wreck their hull too quickly.

Could someone break down what the various ship weapons are actually good for, in plain terms? I'm not looking for a list of "put this weapon on that ship", but the reasoning behind weapon choice. Things like: are Pulse Lasers actually solid for general use or just a safe default, whether Ion Blasters really are the go-to for disabling ships and making pilots bail, or whether the "right" weapon changes depending on what you're fighting versus what you're flying.

Basically the logic of why you'd pick one weapon over another, not just a stat table or list of pairings.

Update - Implementing squadron comms system. Will post more tonight of gameplay

Hey guys i have another quick update for my sound mod!

Im implementing a Squadron Coms. Still mid-testing, but here's what it will have. ill be uploading a clip later on tonight showing these systems working.

  • Order acknowledgment — hit the "attack my target" hotkey, and a random wingman voice barks back something like "Roger, engaging!" almost instantly. Not the same line every time and all custom audio.
  • Kill confirmation — when the target you sent them after actually goes down, you get a callout for it. Tracks multiple targets independently, so retargeting mid-fight doesn't cause a kill to go unacknowledged.
  • Combat chatter — the newest piece. Ongoing radio chatter while you're actually landing hits on the enemy, so it feels like your squad is narrating real progress instead of going quiet the second the first line finishes.

The tech, briefly, for the curious: this is all built in X4's Mission Director — an XML-based scripting layer the game exposes for exactly this kind of thing. A few things I'm kind of proud of:

  • The order-ack hooks the same internal signal the vanilla squad-attack hotkey uses, so it's reacting to real game state, not guessing at your inputs.
  • Every category uses a "shuffle bag" so you hear every line in the pool once before anything repeats — no hearing "Roger that" three times in a row.
  • The combat chatter reacts to actual hit events landing on the enemy (hull and shield damage), with a cooldown plus a random chance layered on top — so it comments on real progress without turning into a machine-gun of voice lines every time your guns are firing.

This is one piece of a few separate audio mods I'm building (ambient fleet comms, hull impact/damage sounds) before eventually merging them into one. All one-actor AI-generated voice for now, but multiple distinct pilot personalities is the plan down the line. I would be open to people who want to lend there voice for actor profiles with your choice of call sign. if your interested please dm.

Still tuning pacing and volume, but it's already made flying with a squad feel a lot less like flying alone. Curious what kind of lines/situations you'd want your own wingmen reacting to — low health? evading a missile? calling out reinforcements? Taking suggestions before I record more.

Oh hey, the Aral Sea is full!

Been visiting Earth sector and noticed this neat little detail. It seems terrans have managed to restore the Aral Sea to it's original state. I wonder if it's intentional or the devs just accidentally used some older space pictures of the area

I visited the Xenon Hub in Eleventh Hour (again)

Was curious to see if there were any updates/upgrades on it since I last travelled to it 4-5ish years ago (Still craving for a Xenon Themed DLC where this thing is playing a role in!)

With my 32km/s Yasur and Travel Mode/SETA glitch it was quite fast this time (it's 140.000kms from the sector center).

Measured the size this time, it seems to be about 30.000kms large (if SETA is really 6x)

nearest one can get before "entering atmosphere"

I've seen some of the newer players struggle with station building, so I made a beginner-friendly guide that walks through the basics of planning, building, production, and a few tips that helped me along the way.

If anyone has feedback or thinks I missed something, I'd really appreciate it. Always looking to improve my tutorials.

Automating collection of items from asteroid mining?

Upvotes

Asteroids Apart, can drop spacefly eggs, lodestones and unstable crystals when mined. Is there a way to automate the collection of these resources alongside regular ore/silicon mining, without having to manually fly out and pick them up?

15+ year player review of guppy.

I ignored the guppy for so long due to cost. But now i have no money issues I’ve been donating my carrier fleets to factions I want to push back on a enamy to preserve balance (donate them on enamy systems of the faction i donate to)

Yea, gupoy is expensive. But as a rapid responce fleet it’s amazing if you decide to forgo gate defencd. If a System is colapsing i can rush my guppys to the conflict in no time. My 12 guppys with 10/6 fighter bomber ties down the enamy till my main fleet arrives. Guppys arrive in 1/3 time time as my main fleet and can save a bad situation better then any other quick response fleet ive built. It’s a very specific ship. But when stuff goes wrong its so nice to have a fleet of guppys to secure the areas till main fleet arrives

Modified i'd have a fun story?

i wouldn't believe myself tbh,

it ALL began when i got done capturing the Erlking, seemed easy enough, lets go for more, so i scoped arount 18 billion (btw in german it's called 18 trillion i guess?) if you wanna sue me, tell them i told you that the german client said "Achtzehn Milliarden" (so 18.... LOTS of "0") just for your mcdonald happy little sue finger that you didnt call sue with anyway,

enough with the funny haha stuff, the erlking capture is easy because it just sits there (hell, if have bothered to get some vet marines, i might've got it in the first run) waiting to get picked up,

1st attempt, OOS:

i positioned 2 of my lovely hercules (um, vanguard? idrk, i'm on the german client) the ones that can carry 219 marines, ofc them being building ships they cant move around fast (that'll come in later) and i fitted them out poorly aswell, thinking of "cannonfodder" kinda way, "you spend 15 million to get a unique ship", anyway, i positioned them OOS next to the erlking, started the capture attempt at "very strong", "very strong", the odds at the 3rd stage were ~2780 attack power to ~1200 something in defense, and because RNG is a bitch, i lost,

not to matter! (arsch leggn) i thought to myself because there seems to be always a cap on a capture attempt (why? do marines not like standing in line?) so i hopped in my moreya, and flew into the sector, because after the first OOS attempt failed the Erlking just vanished from the radar, i can see that as anti-cheese-mechanic, "heheh buddy what now" -thing, but i couldn't see it anymore on the map screen, but my two herculesesesess (?!) were still there, and still in "capturing mode", so i still had two lines pointing towards the ship, so i flew in.

2nd attempt, IS:

that was bit of a mess because i set the max order of marines you can send a little wonky, more like, "mhhh sure" from ship 1 and "yeah the rest" from ship 2, and since i lost the first boarding, without the ship in map scope, only if you were in sector (have i mentioned that before? it didnt vanish, just from radar, but if you were in-system and close enough you could still target it) which meant, manual labour, so i docked at the hercules with the most marines and gave it thee old manual go, which turned out pretty nicely, if you watch out for those station plasma turrets, bit of waiting around and tanking the stations defense drones were no problem for even teladi shields (imagine if you'd go saucer saiyan mk3?!?! yep, for me, terran building is weird)

3rd, which is kinda the point of this post?

i thought, in my ~1500 hours i have in this game, it would be time for something new, and cap a (on the german client) PGS plunderer, the one's that always roam around in L ships, and i got my sight on a Basilisk (ship variation mod) love the thing, perfect for quick striking, but as i learned, i tried the OOS attempt, the ships were ontop of each other from every direction looking, the hercules wouldnt send the pods, it was set to highest of high settings, nothing happend, then i got kinda miffed. traveled into the sector, by that time i had in-sector-teleportation unlocked (first reason for that was to find the erlking blueprints in avarice and in case of the "big wave" you know, savety and that boring stuff) why was i miffed? oh yeah, because at the same time i teleported to the hercules, it sent off all of the marines, the opposing basilisk was aggro'd (red) but instead of fighting a weaponless civilian ship (mine), it flew away.... FAR away... 6370,3 km to the north-east direction in Black Sun V to be exact, and the capture pods of the hercules were *beep beep* -in behind at a blistering 110m/s T_T

long story short on that one, i caught up to it with my hyperion, killed my own capture pods to reset the the actual capture, and here we go, a basilisk with one engine crawling towards my supply ship while it being 6000+ km away from the next gate, and it only took like 6 hours :D

but hey, such is the game o7

Modified Huge update on Fleet comms mod - Now with hull damage sounds in real time

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a quick update after a couple of days of coding and sound design for the mod.

Everything you hear in this clip has been created specifically for the project so far, including custom fleet command voice lines, ambient bridge chatter, and new ship audio.

The biggest breakthrough has been getting custom audio fully integrated into the game and using logic to trigger dynamic hull damage sounds based on incoming damage. If you listen closely, when the green laser hits my ship you'll hear my custom hull damage effects playing. Instead of relying on the default audio or lack of, I created my own basic hull warping, metallic stress, and internal impact sounds to better represent what it would actually sound like from inside a capital ship under fire. I plan to queiten the outside to actually reflect being inside the ship.

The long-term goal is to simulate the experience of being inside the ship, where the audio reflects what's happening around you. For example, once shields fail, you might begin hearing the hull groan, warp, or thud under heavy impacts. Those sounds are all driven by gameplay logic and scale with the amount of damage the ship is taking, giving the player meaningful audio cues rather than just visual feedback.

This is still very much a work in progress and there's a lot to refine, but I'm genuinely excited about this milestone. It finally feels like the project is starting to come alive, and it's opening the door to a much more immersive combat experience with sound.

Meme Displaced building the dock

Upvotes

can’t believe this is so hard. the Displaced mission teleports me to the Grand Exchange and tells me to build a dock. I click all the buttons, find a builder despite having no satellites because I’m in a different ship, and it eventually tells me that it needs energy cells. I spend over an hour flying around to find them, and when I get back I can’t give them to the build storage. I can’t transfer to build storage because “your ship must be docked at an object to transfer wares” (there’s no dock I’m supposed to be building one) I can’t trade with building storage because the kestrel they stuck me in doesn’t appear in the pulldown menu, just my 2 ships back in Terra that have no route here because I was teleported. How am I supposed to progress this mission?

Fleet Ideas

Upvotes

I am about 20 hours into my first play through. As I work to get my mining operations up and running I have been thinking about long term goals. While my main ambition is to setup a full on industrial mega corp, that will have to come with military support for protection and sector security. From my digging around it looks like Terran ships are the best(correct me if that is not accurate). Also digging around I have found that factions only buy there own ships and modules, and Terran economy doesn't need to be flooded with ships and stuff as it breaks. So I will probably just make ships and modules for my own fleet, but sell wares that all factions can use. So with keeping to just Terran ships, what is the best possible setups I can do for the fleets. So like an invasion force, pirate hunter teams, police forces, and any other fleet types I might need but am missing.

Elite: dangerous player starting out

Hey everyone!

I have a couple hundred hours in elite dangerous and I have purchased X4 foundations without any dlc's recently. The reason was that I wanted to play a space game with more content, and also reason. I love elite because of the scenery the feeling of the ships the vast universe and the reason that I can do whatever I want, but after a long time of playing the game becomes kinda pointless. I believed X4 would change that for me, also I love strategy games like Crusader kings, Total war and Civ, so I thought this was for me. However upon completing the tutorial I'm feeling the same pointlessness, nothing adding up to something bigger. The control of the ship and the graphics are way worse and I'm having a hard time learning the game.

I came here for advice on how to learn the game, feel immersed like a true spacepilot, and overcome the feeling of knowing nothing.

Fellow Elite CMDR's who swapped, how did you manage to enjoy this game?

New player advise needed

Hi I have around 20 hours in the game and looking for some advise.
I build a profitable station with around 6 medium miners and 6 transport vessels. The station produces mostly stuff from
Ore and silicone.
I also got the main Hq and now I don't really know what to do next.
No dlc btw.
What should I do next?
Any advice welcome

M Mass Driver Turret vs M Meson Stream Turret

I'm trying out some new tactics and I know folks have been real happy with the meson stream since 9.0. But I'm wondering what your opinions are between the two. I'm noodling out the longest range M-sized turret boats as fleet/station support.

The Boson Lance, Boron Ion Pulse Turret, and Meson Stream are all in the 8k range. The mass Driver is 12k range.
The Meson Stream is a beam weapon, instant hit
The Ion Pulse Turret disables engines/turrets
The Boson Lance is the fastest projectile
The Mass Driver is the most damage per hit

I'm leaning towards the mass drivers for my 'back line frigates'. But I'm wondering what your thoughts are on them too.

H gave up on life after L turrets got knocked out

Not sure if this is intended behaviour. I was hunting an H in the Memorial to get that data shard for the blueprint research, and I quickly knocked out the big seismic guns, after which the H just shut down. It just sat there, with fully functional engines and medium turrets, taking a pounding from my plasma turrets, making no effort to get in range for its needler turrets.

It did not bail (can they even do that, like the fighters?), it just kinda...gave up, and took the long range bombardment. I still destroyed the engines, just in case, but it stopped right when I destroyed the large turrets, and the engines were fully operational for minutes after that, and still stood still.

Just a tiny Xenon fleet

This is Tharka's, at the Gateway to Hatikva's.

Vanilla game, 1d 22h into the save.

What's ridiculous about this, I saw maybe 2 K at once in Hatikva's. If the Xenon had even a tiny brain, they'd send this whole fleet and demolish the opposition.

Instead, they send one tiny task force at a time.

Also I have bad radar coverage here, so there might be more in the sector.

Modified Mod to track missions.

I'm searching for a mod that i can see where is the objective of the mission easily.
Ex.:
There's a mission to destroy some spaceship and it marks exactly where it is.
Or
Need to find a station and it sends me where it is without needing explore 30 minutes
