My apologies for posting late.

It's July! Summer is well underway!

With the warming weather are there any menthol lovers out there? Which products are your favorites, and when do you reach for them?

Do you find yourself switching up your routine, products, or fragrances when the weather warms up? Do you switch from a balm to a splash? Do your shave prep with cold water instead of hot? Vice versa? Let us know!

What else are you looking forward to this summer?

New wetshaver? This is the perfect place to ask questions.

Question What makes a nice razor?

Post image
51 Upvotes

I bought this dorco razor for about 11,000krw to save money and see if I liked using it. And funnily enough I REALLY enjoy it. Its almost the highlight of my day getting to use this bad boy. But the more I see all the much more expensive razors on the market, its got me thinking. What is the actual difference between this and a razor 10x the price. What is it about a more expensive razor that makes it better and will give me a better shave, if theyre all using just a single blade?

Pre shave: shower and Waitrose glycerin soap bar

Razor: 1958 Gillette TV Special flare tip super speed

Blade: Personna GEM PDG (37)

Brush: Captain Fawcett Synthetic V

Bowl Captains choice copper

Soap: Stirling Barbershop

Post shave: Stilring barbershop aftershave balm

A nice classic pairing today which resulted in a very relaxing shave.

4 passes with the deceptively mild yet efficient TV Special and Stirlings amazing barbershop scent.

Outstanding glide from the shaving soap and glycerin pre shave bar, making for a quick, problem free result.

The kind of shave you're a little sorry to end so soon.

Happy hump day.

I hope your week's going well!

Because of u/Poor-Pitiful-Me post about how his razor was altered after being improperly cleaned and seeing how the company took care of him is what made me want to buy from them. Great customer care means a lot to me. I’m now a proud new owner of my first Henson razor.

First impressions with the Futur

Post image

I bought some pre shave cream from Proraso and after a very hot shower decided to go full retard and do the entire shave on level 6 . I keep my beard so it’s mainly from my chin line down and from the top of my beard line up to keep the beard aliened etc . I did 3 passes on the top of the beard and 3 passes on the neck line . This razor definitely has aggression and I’m very grateful for aftershave . It was extreme and like a very Spicy food I enjoyed it when others probably would be creating the return label . I also used the included merkur blade .

Question Vintage Double Edge blades

Hi Wet shavers! I've got these baldes as a bonus on the local garage sale. Do you know if they are still good? Can you shave with them?
There are more available, the price is low, but if you can't use them, isn't worth it...

Discussion Why I No Longer Purchase Badger Brushes

I'm not new to wet shaving but I am new to this group and this my first pay.

I have badger, synth and boar brushes They all make lather and I manage to get good shaves with DE safety razors and straight razors with them all.

The badger has been my favorite but I will no longer consider buying badger brushes because of the cruelty the Chinese use while slaughtering the animals.

I'm not a PETA fan or even a vegetarian. But the methods used to harvest badger fur is unconscionable.

Boar hair is a byproduct of the food industry, ( mostly China) but the slaughter is much more humane and is regulated.

Harvesting horse hair doesn't harm the animal.

I haven't thrown away the badger brush I own but just will not buy another.

BTW, my daily driver is now s a nice boar brush and I have a Trafalgar synthetic for travel and giggles.

I would be happy if gifted a horse hair brush but see no practical use for adding another to my kit. But feel free to sell me on horse hair if you're inclined

I am NOT intending to shame badger users

But some here might wish to consider the harvesting methods in their buying decisions.

If I new what I know now, I wouldn't have bought one.

Pax

I've been using Feather blades and a Merkur 34C for years, and a Bic disposable gives a better shave

Years ago I bought a 34C and a number of blades, it was totally fine and enjoyable. Recently I went travelling and forgot to pack my razor, so just grabbed a BIC disposable razor pack (pivot head, little green strip, three blades) and.... it shaves way better. So far no razor burn, no risk of cutting. I'm really annoyed because I 'enjoy' the shave with a safety razor, but the disposables give a way better end result for less effort.

Is this known and just something I didn't realise, or is there something else going on here?

Found my missing Tabac

Post image

This was a nice shave. As well as the Tabac (I forgot how good this soap actually is) there's also my Goodfellas' Smile Bayonetta razor. Solid brass, made in Italy, very nice razor. Put in a Feather Hi-Stainless blade, these two go together surprisingly well. Efficient, not a single nick or cut. Top it off with the budget Old Spice A/S (I wish I had the old Shulton formulation.) Good early AM shave, now off to work.

You can see in the first picture the cracks in the honing Stone were due to me opening the box upon delivery and it not being clicked in place I dropped it on my kitchen tile. I have glued it back in with CA glue it’s also missing one of the metal retaining clips. Don’t know what they’re actually called but it broke off when I removed the stone to glue it back in

And you can see in the third picture the handle still has its original grease in it

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (Epic Shave!)
Smoothness: ★★★★★ (BBS Perfection)
Irritation: ★☆☆☆☆ (Zero Burn)

Time of Day: Morning ☀️
Blade Uses: 2
Passes: 3

Razor: RazoRock Lupo 95 CC
Blade: 7 O'Clock Super Platinum
Soap: Stirling Soaps and Co. Executive Man
Brush: Yaqi Aqua HighMountain Silvertip Badger
Aftershave: Old Spice Musk
Fragrance: JPG Le Beau Paradise Garden

I don’t think any other soap brand comes close to Stirling when it comes to variety and consistent performance. I loved using Executive Man for the first time, reminded me of Creed Aventus. Idk what element it hit but ever since I shaved I have this urge to restock the Creed Aventus in my collection.

Also I’d like to know do you all load similar amount of soap from the tub while lathering with a badger as you would with a synthetic, or do you tend to load a bit more? Because I felt like I needed to load a tiny bit more than I usually do for my three passes shave routine. DFS+ regardless.

Topped it off with Old Spice Musk and JPG Le Beau Paradise Garden.

Thanks for reading. Happy shaving 🪒. Cheers 🍻

SOTD Finally found my go to razor!

Post image

* Pre Shave: Dove sensitive bar soap
* Razor: Timeless Aluminum Slant
* Blade: Personna Gem Diamond Glide
* Brush: Simpson T3
* Soap: Proraso red tub
* Post shave: Thayers, Stirling sandpiper balm

This razor just blew me away. This is my first aluminum razor so the weight caught me a bit off guard and feels less heavy duty, if that makes sense. Using it feels very mild but what really impressed me was how it handles against the grain. On the very edge of my jawline where the bone is and my neck, my hair grows sideways towards my ears. To get that hair it takes multiple passes against the grain because the hair likes to hide away in the difficult areas and to get my jawline i have to go over thinner skin on top of hard bone. Before id always get massive to moderate irritation when going against the grain in those spots but this razor can get through it like nothing and leave my skin feeling like it was never there! This razor is very difficult to cut yourself with imo. I shaved very quickly and without much care about my technique after seeing how good it felt and I expected some irritation, but all i got was a small weeper from a bad pass.

This is definitely my go to razor and I don’t see myself wanting to use anything else! 10/10

Question Where can recycle used razors in Turkey? Or just safely dispose if not possible.

Most of the blades are eighter turkish or founded in turkey. Its a shame people use 5 blades over DE/single

SOTD Tuesday Afternoon Shave

*️⃣ Razor: Oliworks Meteorite stainless steel
*️⃣ Blade: Personna PDG (2)
*️⃣ Bowl: Captain’s Choice Obsidian
*️⃣ Brush: Kent BK8 Silvertip
*️⃣ Soap: Stirling Unscented with Beeswax
*️⃣ Balm: Nivea Sensitive
*️⃣ Splash: Brut Classic

A fabulous afternoon shave today - everything just performed perfectly.

Although Oliworks calls their #3 baseplate "aggressive," it really isn’t. It is just quite efficient, and the PDG blade makes it come alive.

SOTD Wicked_edge homecoming

My last post on this sub was ten years ago, that was also around. The time of my last safety razor shave.

In that time, I have grown out a full beard, gotten married, had two children, and embraced my male pattern baldness. I found myself sticking to cartridges for my head just because it was fast and easy and my time is in high demand with the kids, but today, I was talking to a guy at work who showed me one of his EDC pictures and it reminded me of the SOTD pictures here that I had taken. The more we talked the more I had the urge to break out the gear and give it a go.

It was...... OK.

I'm way out of practice and shaving my head, particularly the back where I can't see, is way different than my face. I came out with a few cuts, and it's not the smoothest but it was cathartic. I'm gonna have to rotate through some different razors and pick up some better blades (we aren't gonna talk about the Walmart blades I had to use tonight). Overall, it felt good to have a bit of a ritual again, and I still smell amazing!
