How Can Small Acts of Kindness Improve a Patient's Experience?

Healthcare is about more than treating illness. Compassion and human connection can make a meaningful difference in a patient's experience.

The Party Treatment Initiative, sponsored by the National Pre-Medical Association (NPREMA), was created to bring joy and encouragement to patients by celebrating birthdays, holidays, graduations, and other important milestones during their hospital stay. The initiative also gives students and community members an opportunity to volunteer, serve others, and make a positive impact through simple acts of kindness.

As we continue to grow, we hope to expand the Party Treatment Initiative to colleges and communities across the country. Volunteers, supporters, and student leaders all have an important role in helping this mission reach more patients and families.

You can learn more about the initiative here: https://www.nprema.org/thepartytreatment.

For those who have volunteered in hospitals or community programs, what have you learned about the impact that compassion and human connection can have on the people you serve?

My ESC Volunteering Experience in Italy

Post image
3 Upvotes

From 15 June to 6 July, I spent three weeks to volunteer in Bergolo, Italy, a small village where I learned, worked and built connections with people from different countries.

We took part in restoration, gardening, cooking and preparing the Outdoor Festival. In our free time, we explored the area, including a hike to Savona to reach the sea.

The experience gave me new skills, unforgettable memories and friendships that I will carry with me.

[Volunteer] Experienced Mobile App Developer (Flutter) looking to build a free app for a good cause or community help

Hi everyone,

I’m a specialized Mobile Solutions Architect and Flutter Developer. I’m looking to dedicate some of my time and experience to give back to the community by developing a mobile application completely for free ($0) for a meaningful, non-profit project.

If you are running a charity, a community initiative, or have a solid idea for an app that genuinely helps people (e.g., education, health, mutual aid, logistics for donations, etc.), I would love to build it for you.

What I bring to the table:

  • Cross-Platform Development: High-performance, clean UI apps for both Android & iOS using Flutter.
  • Production-Ready Quality: I build apps with scalable architecture, robust state management, and reliable validation.
  • AI Integration: If the project requires smart features, I can integrate AI capabilities (like Gemini or smart search components).

What I am looking for:

  • A clear, well-thought-out idea that aims to help people, not for commercial profit.
  • Someone dedicated to managing the project/content while I handle the tech side.

If you have a project that matches this, please drop a comment or send me a DM with a brief description of your idea and how it helps the community.

Let's build something impactful together!

Remote volunteers needed for nonprofit supporting first responders and animals in emergencies

Hi everyone,

First Responders’ Veterinary Network (FRVN) is a nonprofit organization being built to support first responders when animals are involved in emergency incidents such as motor vehicle crashes, structure fires, evacuations, livestock incidents, kennel emergencies, and other animal-related public safety situations.

We are currently looking for remote volunteers who can help with non-veterinary support roles. You do not need to be a veterinarian or have emergency-response experience to help.

Areas where volunteers could make a real difference include:

  • Social media support
  • Website updates
  • Graphic design
  • Fundraising research
  • Grant research
  • Donor outreach support
  • Email/newsletter writing
  • Volunteer coordination
  • Data entry and CRM support
  • Podcast/media outreach
  • Corporate sponsor research
  • Creating educational materials
  • Local fire/EMS contact research
  • Administrative support

This is a good fit for people who care about animals, first responders, emergency preparedness, public safety, nonprofit work, or community service. Most tasks can be done remotely and on a flexible schedule.

FRVN is not an animal rescue or shelter. Our goal is to help build a responder-aligned veterinary support network so animals can receive earlier professional support, first responders can work more safely, and communities can be better prepared before emergencies happen.

If you are interested in helping, please comment or message me with your background, skills, and how much time you might be able to contribute each week.

Thank you for considering helping us build something meaningful.

What keeps you volunteering long-term without burning out?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently researching volunteer sustainability, volunteer retention, and burnout in volunteer-driven organizations.

For those who have volunteered (or currently volunteer) in nonprofits, community organizations, student organizations, advocacy groups, etc.:

  • What made you stay committed to volunteering?
  • What contributed most to burnout or made people quit?
  • What did your organization do that genuinely supported your mental and emotional well-being?
  • How did they help volunteers balance volunteering with school, work, family, or personal responsibilities?
  • If you could change one thing about volunteer management, what would it be?

I'm especially interested in practical systems, habits, or policies that made volunteering sustainable rather than overwhelming.

Thank you for sharing your experiences!

The celebration doesn’t end when the last float passes. On Sunday, June 14, The Trash Foundation is organizing volunteers to walk behind the parade and help restore the streets,

I am looking for 50 volunteers to walk the back of the parade and pick up trash. Registration is required to make sure we have enough supplies.

Why Education Is Still the Most Radical Act of Kindness?

There is a quiet kind of injustice that doesn't make

headlines. It doesn't announce itself with sirens or

spectacle. It simply shows up every morning when a child

wakes up in a shelter home, an orphanage, or an

underserved community and has nowhere purposeful to go. No classroom that sees them. No teacher who knows their name.

We talk about education as though it is already a given.

But for milions of children across India, a quality

education, one that actually builds skills, confıdence, and the ability to imagine a future, remains painfully out of reach.

The Gap Between Schooling and Learning

There's a difference between being enrolled in a school and actually learning. A child can sit in a classroom for years and still emerge without the ability to read fluently hold a basic conversation in English, or navigate the digital world that now governs almost everything from job applications to government services.

This gap between schooling and real learning is where inequality quietly compounds. The children who fall into it are not less capable. They are simply less resourced. And that is a problem society created, which means society has the responsibility to fix it.

What Real Intervention Looks Like

Doing something genuinely different. Rather than offering one-off donations or surface level support, Unessa Foundation runs Project Sneh, a volunteer led learning programme designed specifically for children in orphanages and shelter homes.

Project Sneh doesn't just teach children to read. It teaches them literacy and numeracy, conversational and business English, digital basics, and life skills the full toolkit a young person needs to transition from surviving to thriving after they turn 18 and age out of institutional care. Sessions are hands-on, activity-based, and led by real volunteers who show up consistently. Not once. Not for a photo op. Consistently.

That consistency is what changes a child's relationship with learning. When someone keeps coming back for you, you start to believe you are worth coming back for.

Why Volunteering in Education Matters

One of the most powerful things about the Unessa model is that it is volunteer-driven. That means ordinary people, students, working professionals, anyone with a few hours and a willinaness to teach, can directly shape a child's

trajectory. You don't need a teaching degree. You need

presence, patience, and the belief that every child deserves a real shot.

Volunteering in education also has a way of changing the volunteer. When you sit across from a child who is trying to decode their first sentence in English and you watch the moment it clicks something shifts in you too. You

understand, in a way no article can fully convey, why this work matters.

The Bigger Picture

Education is not just about individual children. An educated generation is a healthier, more economically stable, more empathetic society. Every child we fail to reach is a loss that ripples outward in potential unrealised, in cycles of poverty that continue, in a future that is smaller than it needed to be.

The most radical thing we can do right now is choose to act on that understanding. Donate, volunteer, or simply amplify the work of organisations that are already on the ground doing this difficult, essential work.

How do you actually track who showed up vs who signed up?

I've coordinated crews for events for a while now and the thing that still gets me every time is the gap between the roster and reality. People sign up, the schedule looks fully staffed, and then on the day you're somehow short three people at the one station that can't be short.

Self-reported check-in never worked for me. People mark themselves present from the parking lot, or a friend checks them in, and you don't find out a spot was actually empty until something's already on fire. So I've ended up relying on team leads physically confirming their people, which works but doesn't scale past a certain size and falls apart the second a lead is busy.

I'm curious how others handle this, especially with volunteers where you can't exactly discipline a no-show. Do you overstaff on purpose and accept the waste? Keep a standby list and scramble? Some check-in system that actually holds up? Low-tech answers very welcome, I feel like I've overcomplicated this.

5 Simple Ways You Can Help your Local Community Today

Want to make a difference in your community but don’t know where to start?

From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, from the bustling streets of Western cities to small outskirt villages across the countryside, every person is most welcome.

Although, most people are often sceptical on how to help the needy ones even though they want to but end up doing nothing. The main reason being most of us think that only MONEY can help these communities.

But you need to know not only just by money, but also from volunteering at a local anganwadi, to teaching the underprivileged kids or cleaning the neighbourhood may also help to strengthen community bonds.

Looking for quick, simple ways to help your local community today? Whether you have 10 minutes or a few hours, this blog shares 5 practical ways by which you can give back to your community right now, aligned with India's spirit of Seva (service) and Madhyasth Darshan (the philosophy of coexistence).

·       Volunteering at Local Centres (anganwadi, community kitchen, or animal shelter) is always a smart move.

·       Teaching Underprivileged Children at Unessa Foundation (https://unessafoundation.org/) is a promising step toward education for all.

·       Joining a Cleanliness Drive where you have to pick up litter, plant trees, or paint walls can also be a great start!!

·       Donating blood at Medical Camps can be a direct life support system for many.

·       Mentoring Youth with career advice and skill development can also be very impactful.

Do these volunteering ideas feel too demanding, or are they exactly the kind of small actions that spark big change?

If people don’t commit to helping their communities, the impact is severe. Globally, over 1.5 billion people volunteer monthly, but without persistent engagement, gaps in education, health, and social unity widens — leaving millions of people vulnerable. In India, many statistical records highlight that millions of children still face poverty, lack of education, and child labour without consistent volunteer support.

 So now, you tell me:

In building stronger social bonds, what matters more — time or money?
