I was exploring a part of the Amazon jungle on a topographic map and I discovered this geologic feature of 6-7 km in diameter with a rim 100-200 meters above the surroundings ground. Do you guys think this is a caldera? I marked the rim with a red dash line. It is located at the coordinates -8.81,-74.73 see https://opentopomap.org/#map=12/-8.81/-74.73

It seems previously unknown. I don't find any mention of either calderas or extinct volcanoes in the area. One "smoking gun" is that the river that crosses the interior of this caldera is known as the "boiling river" because its water is heated to 99°C in some hot spots (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanay-timpishka)

look i did warn u this one is kinda stupid. im not super super knowledgeable on volcanology, my area is ecology & evolution. but i was thinking about climate change, and that volcanos have historically plunged the earth into colder temps, like 1817, and im wondering if we got truly desperate enough, could we set off a volcano to lower temps, knowing the cost/damage?

I just think its the lesser of two evils. Everyone dies, or a lot of people die. And everyone isnt just humans. plants. animals. everything. or a lot of everything dies but not everything. id choose the volcano any day. if part of the problem with climate change is the heat spiral feedback loop of death, like an out of control fever for earth, you have to break that fever somehow, right? i learned somewhere that dropping things into volcanoes can be far more volatile than just melting into the volcano. That makes me wonder how percarious some are, and if theyre sensitive enough for us to trigger them.

In the meantime ill continue assuming the government and humanity will do nothing about any of it and just keep brainstorming shit we could do to fix it. and guerilla garden like mad. having to hope for regular famine instead of extinction really is a kick in the head.

Mount Mayon is one of the most famous volcanoes in the Philippines. It is located in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region. It is known around the world for its almost perfect cone shape, which makes it one of the country's most beautiful natural landmarks. Aside from its beauty, Mayon is also an active volcano that has erupted many times throughout history.

According to a popular Bicolano legend, the name "Mayon" came from the beautiful maiden named Daragang Magayon, whose name means "beautiful lady." She was admired by many because of her kindness and beauty. Magayon fell in love with a brave warrior named Panganoron. Their love faced many challenges because another powerful man wanted Magayon to become his wife.

A battle took place between the warrior and the jealous suitor. During the fight, Panganoron was struck by an arrow and died. Magayon, filled with grief, embraced him and chose to die beside the man she loved. The people buried the two lovers together.

After many days, a magnificent mountain rose from the place where they were laid to rest. The mountain became known as Mount Mayon, symbolizing the everlasting love of Daragang Magayon and Panganoron. Many people believe that when the volcano erupts, it represents the mountain's powerful emotions, reminding everyone of their tragic love story.

I was present for episode 51. The roar, the heat... It was amazing. Epic day.

I recently visited the Calderón Hondo volcano in Fuerteventura, one of the best-preserved craters in the Bayuyo volcanic field. It's fascinating to see the stark contrast between the arid landscape and the volcanic structure, which stands at roughly 278 meters above the surrounding terrain.

Being able to look directly into the crater offers a clear perspective on the island's relatively recent geological activity (approx. 50,000 years ago).

As a geology enthusiast, I found the preservation of the crater rim particularly impressive. Have any of you had the chance to study or hike this specific volcanic field?

One doesn't think of the words 'active glacier-covered andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc' when hiking thru the woods and meadows here. But it certainly is.
