Haul Unexpected new vinyl haul from Goodwill

Post image
111 Upvotes

Found a random group of newer records in the middle of all of the typical thrift store records at my local Goodwill. Not really familiar with any of these albums, just a few of the artists, but an unexpected find. All in shrink and half unopened. All of them had promotional use only stickers on them. So far I've only listened to The Cure and that's a keeper.

Collection Just got into vinyl collecting like a week ago, here is my Haul.

Hello everyone, this is my first post here!

So I will just give a quick overview of each record:

-Led Zeppelin III Original 1970 pressing, third variant with correct Peter Grant credits (well, removed), and no 'Celebration' misprint. However, the sleeve seems to be the earliest possible as it features the Peter Grant credits inside. One of my favourite albums of all time, and now can’t wait to hear the A5/B5 matrix (included in the deadwax, along with the occult quotes). The plum/red on the label also looks so good in real life.

-Queen Original 1973 pressing, Blair’s cut of Queen’s debut album, with the 'Blair Rules’ and 'Blairs' in the deadwax. Everything looks rather clean and nice, with the sleeve including all the credits and info to support it being a first pressing

- Led Zeppelin II 1971 Japan Reissue. The album has all the stuff in the deadwax to support this reissue, along with the Japanese Quality Control stamp thing. It also has the ¥2000 price on the back. This is the cleanest of any of my records (except for the two sealed ones I have, those are obviously unplayed), and has only one visible surface scuff on side one, and a couple small cosmetic scratches along on that side. Side two shows virtually no signs of play, so I can’t wait to hear it as these Japanese records were supposedly very high quality.

-Presence 1980’s West German Pressing. I was not fully able to confirm what year this specific record is from, but I at least found the timeframe it could be from. The Alsdorf plants are known for their high quality records, so I can’t wait to hear it, especially that it might get me to like some songs on the album as listening to them on Apple Music is sometimes harsh on the ear

- Play the Game 1980 original 7’’ single. One of my favourite Queen songs from the early 1980s, getting this as my first single was nice, especially with the B-Side of 'A Human Body’, which is not featured on any Queen album

-Bohemian Rhapsody 12’’ 50th anniversary edition single. Obviously the song is legendary, so I was bound to get a single of it one day. Seeing a translucent blue vinyl made me want to get it even more as I love how both translucent and coloured records look, so why not get one.

-Rock and Roll 2018 Record Store Day 7’’ single with B-Side 'Friends’. Two previously unreleased versions of two great Led Zep songs on a coloured vinyl. What More can I ask for. Both this and the Bohemian Rhapsody are sealed, so for the first plays, they will be completely clean.

Sorry if this is a very long post, but I’m just so happy to own all of these now. Haven’t played any of them yet, so I’m very excited for that, especially that plum/red A5/B5 of Led Zeppelin III.

Also, does anyone want to guess my two favourite bands? ;)

Stevie Wonder Japanese market on Motown VIP-6365. Truly a journey in music on his album. I'm not a massive Stevie fan, but I really enjoy this album from start to end.

I was pretty stoked to find this in nearly unplayed condition. Love the artwork front and back and I couldn’t pass it up for $1 at the local thrift store

Also grabbed some nearly unplayed 45’s for $1 from Prince, Kiss, The Who, and The Undisputed Truth

Discussion Do Greatest Hits albums have a place in your collection?

Post image

I keep stuff like Steve Miller and Eagles Hits around for visitors and normies who don’t give a shit about my Japanese pressings of Kiss albums. I rarely spin a greatest hits album alone, just for the reason I tend to gravitate more toward deep cuts.

Steve Miller is the tits, tho.

I recently got to see Ladytron live and it was awesome, and that re-upped my efforts to find a couple of their albums on vinyl. Velocifero is my favorite album of theirs. I happened to spot a pretty rare limited-edition pressing of it when we stopped to a local record store for the BF to pick up an order. And it was in white marble, my favorite of the colors it came in. Wasn't cheap, but it was way less than it's currently going for on Discogs and I get to support one of my local stores! It also comes with a fold-out poster with thank-yous on the back. All of it's in great shape and I think it sounds just fine. 🎧

French pressings from Pathé Marconi, which i recently swapped Pathé Marconi vinyl care inners into Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road. All 70s pressings. Red Album is a second pressing. Sgt Pepper is a 1974 pressing, Abbey Road is a 1973 reissue, and Blue Album is a 1973 first french pressing. Red Album, Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road are from my grandparents, their Blue Album was stolen by a trashmate friend. Decided to get one for my birthday, from a good friend this time, who gifted us vintage pressings of Jean Michel Jarre, Pink Floyd, Eagles, etc.... Sgt Pepper has the cutouts btw ! Red Album and Blue Album have their OG inner sleeves.

Haul Today’s haul

I always check out the local record stores when I travel for work. Here’s what I got in Northampton, Massachusetts today.

I think that’s the only Roxy Music record I don’t already own.

The Bukka White is killer. I’ve been listening to a fair amount of delta blues lately, so this will probably be in heavy rotation when I get home.

The Mary McCaslin sounded terrific from what I heard online. Judee Sill vibes or something like that.

And I’m an unabashed fan of old country music. Hank Jr is kinda awesome.

Discussion What's your worst sounding record?

Not talking about surface noise, clicks, pops, or scratches. I want to know what records you have in your possession that are abominable and abysmal when it comes to their primary function - relaying sound to the intrepid listener. I'm talking about a pristine record that could be a virgin to the diamond, and yet sounds like it was mixed and pressed by a drunk 5 year old as a joke.

I was going through my Kinks records today and saw my "The Live Kinks" record from Reprise Records. I remembered listing to it when I bought it for a few bucks and thinking it was the saddest and most head scratching official release of any record I had ever heard. I don't know if it was a total cash grab or what - but it's basically unlistenable. I can't even imagine a child in 1970 listening to this on a shitty turntable with built-in speakers getting any enjoyment out of this. There is no need to go into further detail as that is not the point of my post.

It just got me pondering - what are some of the most egregiously unlistenable records you have in your collection? Bootlegs are not ideal for this conversation but are welcome all the same. I will say there are two useful things about this live Kinks album. If you wanted a 30 minute sample of screaming over muffled bar music, or if you wanted studying the approach Dave had to guitar, as his lead guitar chops can be heard gloriously loud during some songs. Not enough to save this complete failure of a live album by any means. To top it all off, first song is listed as "All Day and All of the Night" as the opener on both sleeve and label (their most famous song) - yet it's actually the obscure "Till the End of the Day" that kicks things off into the world of horrible 1960's live album recording. Almost seems like it was on purpose. This record sssssuuuuucccckkssssssss!

Record Björk - Greatest Hits

Post image

I grabbed this from upstairs out of the secondary listening room. She has affinity for greatest hits albums and compilations where I suppose I am a completist and a greatest hits collection to me mean the entire discography… Lolz 😆

Either way I don’t have enough Björk in my life so this will do this morning. Lots of work to do and this album is mastered so well I can just get immersed.

Discussion First Steppenwolf's album

Hi everyone!

I've been looking for the self-titled debut album by Steppenwolf on vinyl for a while now, and I was wondering if it's normal that there seem to be so few copies available.

On Vinted I've only found one listing, and it's shipping from Germany. On eBay there are a few more, but since I live in Italy, the shipping usually costs more than the record itself.

Is this album actually hard to find, or am I just not looking in the right places?
