Deltarune Chapter 5 Hey so why do we still think FRIEND is the TAIL OF HELL Spoiler

Pink debunked it in Chapter 5 when she confirmed that there is no singular FRIEND, rather they're a group of cat device things.

It was already clearly false before Chapter 5 because FRIEND clearly didn't have a tail but even now people take this clearly false theory as fact without even questioning it.

Discussion Undertale characters are way more evil than I remembered now that I think about it.

Upvotes

It has been a lot of years since the last time I played this game, and rethinking about the events and the characters' actions during the game now... Things were way darker than I perceived back then, so I decided to write this post and share my thoughts about each character and how evil they are.

Normal enemies: Most of them probably just attack you out of obligation since humans are hunted by law; still, it's hard to argue it justifies trying to kill a child that is not even trying to hurt you... Most of them are definitely evil.

Toriel: She let at least FIVE children go out of the Ruins knowing very well they'd have basically no chance of survival; it already started like this. She kind of tries to stop you from going outside and being killed by the monsters, but the fact that she just gives up this idea and lets you go makes the case difficult for her. She also asks you to never come back... I genuinely don't understand the reason, but I highly doubt it makes up for the possibility of letting a child die in Snowdin while she could accept them back in and offer refuge. We could argue that actually keeping them trapped in the ruins would be considered kidnapping, but in this case it'd probably be justified. I guess she's mostly irresponsible than evil, but it's still stupid.

Papyrus: It's a kind of hard case; his puzzles are actually harmless, and he's not even trying to kill you. He still hurts you, though, which would already give him jail time in real life for child assault... Like most characters anyway. Things get harder to judge after that because of Undyne; he knows very well that she wants to kill you and kind of tries to help you... Really badly, it's arguable, but maybe we could give him the benefit of the doubt this time. He's evil by real-life standards, but for the game standards, he's actually pretty innocent. More naive than evil I guess.

Undyne: Easily the WORST case in the game. I already disliked her back in my first playthrough, but reflecting now, she's actually much worse. Most enemies just give up fighting you, but she's really insistent and just keeps chasing you again and again. We could argue that she thinks all humans are bad and that explains why she wants to kill us so badly, but like I said before, it simply doesn't justify trying to kill a child who's not even trying to hurt you. It's even worse in her cutscene before her battle; she makes it very clear that she was watching us. She watches us being kind with other monsters and being completely harmless and still says that it would be better if we were dead. So besides successive murder attempts, we also have psychological abuse here. If it were a normal child instead of Frisk, this would be a hell of a traumatic experience, not something that could be solved with a simple date, as Papyrus thinks. Undyne is 100% evil, and I still despise her.

Alphys: Quite low in guiltyness, all of the "Mettaton attacks" she fabricates only fall into child assault at most since they don't actually kill you, and the last battle against Mettaton wasn't part of her plan anyway. Compared to Undyne... I genuinely don't think there's much to judge here.

Mettaton: Besides evil... I guess he might actually be a psychopath... I mean, his plan is to kill a child in live for entertainment! And to become a star on the surface? What about all the monsters stuck undergound? He doesn't even want to do something to help them? Not even Alphys? What the heck is wrong with you man?! And the fact that he stops not because of mercy but because "the monsters would have no stars left in the Underground"... No, even Undyne kind of has a redemption arc after your date with her, but Mettaton's case is absolutely stupid. 100% evil.

Asgore: Hehe... How do you even start with this guy? He was the one who created a law to kill any human who falls into the underground, INCLUDING CHILDREN. Like Toriel said before, he could pass through the barrier with one soul and get the remaining ones pacifically (in a cemetery or waiting for people to die in hospitals, I don't know), but instead he decided that it was a better choice to just... Let six children die... Evil.

Flowey/Asriel: Simple, right? A case can be made on the fact that he was unable to feel empathy while he was Flowey; personally, I don't think this justifies anything he did. But hey, that's why the game asks if you want to forgive him or not.

Sans: The most innocent one here, an absolute angel... Oh wait, he lets you kill 80% of the underground before doing something just because of the promise he made to Toriel... Damn, we almost had it this time...

Chara: Evil. The only thing she does in-game is erase the world at the end of the genocide route (with or without the player's consent). What calls my attention the most is that she implies that she was the one in control all the time; that means she could've stopped us if she could? It's hard to say exactly, but if that's the case, then it's one more thing to think about. Now, about the "non-in-game" things she does... She tried to kill the humans in her village back when she was attempting that stupid plan with Asriel. She hates humanity. And she was smiling when Asgore was sick, right? I don't remember much about this part honestly, but considering Asgore wasn't evil, that was kind of cruel on her part. Ah, and she wants our soul, which makes it hard to measure how "evil" this is because it change almost nothing in the game.

Ironically, the only monsters in this game who are ACTUALLY good people by real-life standards are probably the NPCs in Snowding, Hotland, etc. Although some people would still argue that their lack of action on defending us or trying to change the status quo still makes them evil. What do you guys think?

Theory W.D. Gaster is actually an Amalgam of two separate entities in Undertale.

For a whole decade, the biggest mystery in Undertale has been discovering who W.D. Gaster really is. For years, the standard answer was simply that he was the ancient Royal Scientist of the Underground. However, after spending a lot of time analyzing the lore and connecting the dots, I’ve formulated a new theory about his true identity—or rather, their true identities.

  1. The Rule of Fonts: As we all know, Sans and Papyrus always use the fonts they are named after in their dialogue boxes—this is an established pattern in Toby Fox's world. When the entity we call "Gaster" (the pale face) appears in the game, he just stands there as a speechless, cracked figure and vanishes. However, it is highly likely that if he did have dialogue, he would speak in the Aster font (since his name literally contains it: gASTER).The other half of this entity would be the "W.D." part, which stands for WingDings—the famous font that uses symbols and emojis as characters. He is the one who "speaks in hands," exactly as the River Person warns us in Hotland.

  2. The Universal Rule of Amalgams: In Undertale, Amalgams are monsters that melted and fused together because their physical bodies couldn't handle high amounts of Determination/Energy. Instead of dying, their essence was forced into a single, shared vessel. When the disaster at the CORE occurred, this exact type of fusion likely took place. Instead of dying or disintegrating, the scientist (W.D.) and his assistant or relative (Gaster) were violently melted together into a single universal file registry due to the CORE's massive energy output.

  3. The Antifusion: What we encounter in Undertale’s hidden rooms aren't just "shattered fragments" of one single scientist. They are an Antifusion—a glitchy, failing attempt by the game's reality to process a fused being.A massive piece of evidence for this is the internal file name of the "W.D." entity (the condom-like sprite). In the game files, it is literally named REDACTED. This proves that his consciousness and voice were censored and erased by the world, while the other half—the pale, empty skull face—was left behind as a mindless shell under the code name mysteryman.

  4. The Symbolism of the Monochrome: In Deltarune, the protagonists never kill a single monster. Enemies always run away, get tired, or spare you, and the combat is full of bright colors. Undertale presents the exact opposite: the combat grid is completely monochrome (black and white, with very few exceptions like Sans' flashing eye or Omega Flowey). When you deplete a monster's HP in Undertale, their soul shatters, and they turn into gray dust.Using this symbolism, we can interpret that the monochrome entities in Undertale are essentially "ghosts" or dead reflections of what they once were. The same applies to Gaster's Followers: they are entirely gray, hollow-eyed, and speak in empty riddles because they are the desaturated ghosts of citizens who once lived vibrantly in the Light World.

  5. Conclusion: W.D. Gaster is not, and has never been, just a single pale man with hollow eyes. He is two distinct individuals forced into one name. This theory allows us to perfectly separate the rare encounters in the game: sometimes we meet "W.D." (REDACTED), sometimes we meet "Gaster" (mysteryman), and sometimes we just hear echoes of the tragic cosmic Amalgam known as "the man who speaks in hands".

What do you guys think?

Discussion Who would you say is UNDERTALE's Secret / Super / Shadow Crystal Boss?

Sans

Pros:

- Is the most likely to actually have a Shadow Crystal, given his seeming knowledge of the future.

- Fits the "vibe" of a Secret Boss the best

- Fight is very hard

Cons:

- Isnt really that "secret"

So Sorry

Pros:

- Is by far the most hidden, requiring some really obtuse steps in order to encounter

- Exists outside the bounds of the map, kinda like Jevil

Cons:

- Absolutely does NOT fit the vibe of a Secret Boss

- Was a fanmade kickstarter character

- Fight is quite easy

Mad Mew Mew

Pros:

- Character you encounter in the main story that gains a new form in an optional superboss encounter, exactly like Spamton

- Is somewhat hidden

- Is literally a Secret Boss in Deltarune

- Fight is quite hard

Cons:

- Only exists in the Switch release

Sans (most fitting)
So Sorry (most secret)
Mad Mew Mew (bit of both)

Deltarune Chapter 5 Is Fighting Pink Worth Anything? Spoiler

(Originally posted to r/deltarune but I don't have enough karma)

I mean, basically the title. I love video games, but I wouldn't really consider myself a gamer, because despite loving to play them for the story I am literally cheeks at anything that requires real gaming skill. I've sunk genuine hours into Pink's fight, and haven't gotten past 50%. I know if I kept trying I'd eventually beat it, but I honestly just don't want to (I know, how lame of me, but I play video games for the fun of it, and this actually just feels like a punishment atp). Is there any in-game reason to complete this fight? I know there's lore and all that, but I could just look that up or watch someone else's play through. Is there anything that would justify me specifically completing this fight?

And if there is, somebody please give me tips on the bomb attack because I truly don't have the brainpower to understand how to dodge that :'p

Discussion Ranking Knight Candidates by how many Shelter Codes they have access to: Spoiler

The shelter codes are the main clue towards the identity of the Knight. Susie says it herself, the Knight must be someone with ties to the Mayor, who attends Church, and has something to do with the police. We are clearly intended to use this fact to deduce the identity of the Knight.

Which is why it is so odd to me that Knight Discussion rarely bring up the codes in spite of Toby Fox himself drawing attention to them. So here I'll be ranking the main Knight theory candidates by how able they are to know each of the three codes. I'll be giving each code category one of three markings:

[X] Means they couldn't know the code.

[O] Means they do or likely could know the code.

[?] Means they could know the code, but it relies on making assumptions.

These candidates will be judged by their ability to know all three codes by themselves. This list will not be accounting for potential accomplices in the conspiracy simply just telling the Knight the codes they know.

Note: There are two separate church code categories that account for the code being safeguarded by Alvin or Toriel respectively. As I have heard of some theories that the Delta Rune code is kept by Toriel and not Alvin.

8th Papyrus:

Mayor's Code [X]: Papyrus is known to admire authority figures in Undertale, that being Undyne and Asgore. It's not unbelievable that he would try to ingratiate himself with Carol like he did with Undyne. Unfortunately, I doubt Carol would ever trust him enough to tell or show him her code.

Church Code - Alvin [X]: There is no indication of Papyrus being religious or attending Church.

Church Code - Toriel [X]: Sans is certainly... 'connecting' to Toriel. But Papyrus himself has nothing to do with Toriel outside of that.

Police Code [X]: Papyrus could try and strike a friendship with Undyne like with Carol. I still doubt he would be able to convince her to give him the code.

Conclusion: The only way this is possible is if Gaster gave Papyrus the cheat codes instead lol.

7th Dess:

Mayor's Code [?]: She's Carol's daughter so she is seemingly in a prime position to learn about this code. I mean, the code is literally found in her guitar. The only problem is that the code itself implies it was made AFTER Dess's disappearance, given that the code is clearly 1225 which is heavily associated with Dess. So this pretty much depends on whether the codes were set up before or after the Dessappearence.

Church Code - Alvin [X]: I don't think there are even any mentions of Dess attending Church at any point. Sure she was probably brought to Church by her mom at some point but she doesn't seem to have any strong personal connection to it.

Church Code - Toriel [X]: Toriel is a family friend, but she is neither part of the conspiracy nor is she personally connected to Dess in any special way.

Police Code [X]: Asgore is a family friend, but Dess has no real special connection to Asgore specifically outside of the disappearance. Same goes for Undyne and the police in general.

Conclusion: Dess knowing all three codes is completely reliant on her accomplice['s]. Carol, if she is working with the Knight, would be able to just tell her about her own and Kris should at least know one. Ultimately, there are simply too many unknowns in the equation for Dess Knight to fit cleanly as the answer.

6th Noelle:

Mayor's Code [O]: It would honestly be more shocking if Noelle didn't know about this code. Not only is Carol her mother, the code is found in Dess's guitar which Noelle would almost certainly go and inspect at some point out of grief and nostalgia.

Church Code - Alvin [O]: Noelle definitely goes to Church and is part of the choir. If she wanted to she could probably find the code without arousing suspicion. Bonus points for being in the Church when Susie points out the Knight probably attends Church.

Church Code - Toriel [?]: The Holidays and Dreemurrs have drifted apart in recent years. In addition, Noelle has no known association to Toriel. Although we do know that Noelle has stayed overnight at the Dreemurr residence whenever she got locked out of her house.

Police Code [X]: Noelle has nothing to do with Asgore, Undyne, or really anything to do with the police.

Conclusion: It was looking good at first but It just doesn't seem feasible for Noelle to know about the police code.

5th Asriel:

Mayor's Code [?]: It's not impossible, but we just don't know enough to say for sure Asriel had to opportunity to acquire this code by himself. If the narrative ever makes mentions at any point that Asriel visited the Holiday house after Dess disappeared please tell me and I'll mark this an [O].

Church Code - Alvin [O]: Asriel was once in the choir so, similar to Noelle, he probably had a chance to find this code.

Church Code - Toriel [O]: Toriel is Azzy's mom, same as Kris.

Police Code [?]: We just don't know enough about Asriel and Asgore's relationship after the Dessappearance to determine this.

Conclusion: It's plausible enough, but still relies on a few assumptions.

4th Kris:

Mayor's Code [O]: It's not hard to imagine Kris going to the Holiday house and finding the code in the guitar. We know from Noelle that Kris has helped Noelle outright break into her own house whenever she got locked out after Dess left.

Church Code - Alvin [?]: Kris apparently used to play piano at the Church, but they have stopped doing so in recent years. There doesn't seem to be much pointing to Kris knowing Alvin's code.

Church Code - Toriel [O]: Toriel is Kris's mom, it goes without saying that Kris would be able to find where she hides her code.

Police Code [?]: Asgore may be Kris's dad, but the two of them have drifted apart ever since Asgore got divorced. Furthermore, it can be inferred that Kris was unaware of the code hidden in Flowery's pot, given that Flowery secretly told Susie about where the code was hidden which is completely pointless if Kris already knows where it's hidden. Ultimately, we can't know for sure one way or the other if Kris actually knew the code.

Conclusion: Kris is the first candidate who potentially could know all three codes by themself. While Kris being the Knight is highly unlikely, we must still acknowledge that Kris would be able to fulfil the base requirement of knowing all three codes.

3rd Carol:

Mayor's Code [O]: She probably wrote this code in the first place.

Church Code - Alvin [?]: Carol doesn't bother attending Church even when her own daughter is part of the choir and her dying husband is risking his health to attend. However...

Church Code - Toriel [?]: Toriel doesn't seem to like Carol. However...

Police Code [O]: Works closely with the police and personally supports Asgore's investigations. We even know that she visits Flower King since she leaves a note there telling Asgore to pay his rent.

Conclusion: This is all assuming that Carol doesn't already know all three codes by default because she's the mayor. I personally imagine she's only supposed to know the mayor code, otherwise what's the point of the other two? In any case, she has no direct connection to the Church and is on bad terms with Toriel so she has low chances of having access to the Delta Rune code. That being said, she's still one of the characters with the best chance to actually find all three codes.

2nd Kriselle/Amalgam:

Mayor's Code [O]: Both parts would know this one.

Church Code - Alvin [O]: Noelle is part of the church choir.

Church Code - Toriel [O]: Toriel is Kris's mom.

Police Code [?]: This one is still spotty, but still totally possible for Kris.

Conclusion: Yeah this one pretty much checks out besides the small problem of the police code.

1st Rudy:

Mayor's Code [O]: His wife is the mayor, she honestly probably told him what the code is and where she put it. Even if she didn't, Rudy almost certainly went to go check the guitar at some point. Even if he isn't the Knight, I imagine he knows this code.

Church Code - Alvin [O]: Rudy likes going to Church so much that he'll risk his health over it. He's probably been attending for decades by now, it's not hard to believe that he'd be able to find the code if he looked for it. Bonus points for being in the Church when Susie points out the Knight probably attends Church.

Church Code - Toriel [O]: Rudy is like the only adult from the good old days that Toriel is still on speaking terms with. And someone would have to go pick up Noelle whenever she stayed overnight at the Dreemurr house.

Police Code [O]: Rudy literally brings up that he's Asgore's best friend every time you choose to talk to him. I have to imagine that Rudy visited Flower King at least a few times, so he definitely had the chance.

Conclusion: Out of all the potential candidates, Rudy is by far the one in the best position to acquire all three shelter codes. That's not conclusive evidence for him being the Knight, but it is a major factor that should be considered.

Question Is there ANY way to retry the fight with the Knight after losing?

Post image
Upvotes

I've finally got the chance to fight the Knight and am currently stuck in the fight (shocker, I know). But the thing is, after losing it is such a pain to have to close the game, get in, watch the whoooole cutscene with Tenna being disarmed over and over again, it is incredibly boring.

And I get it, if you lose the story keeps on going because Tobias the Fox wanted to the whole "the party is not strong enough to defeat this guy yet", but like, is there not anyway to retry it without closing the game? (I am playing on PS4)

So, back again with the dumb questions, thank you all for answering my question on how to start the Neutral Route, now that I finished it... uh, how do I start the Pacifist Route? Just asking before I do anything stupid and mess everything up.

Edit: Ok, I'm a bit of an idiot, I should've specified, my bad. So once I finish the Neutral Route, do I reset my save file?

Edit 2: Thank you so much guys! I still feel bad for not specifying my question.
