So this morning, I received an email letting me know my appeal to continue in the Faculty of Science had been denied for the following school year, and that I'm required to spend time away from UBC. This is actually my second time being required to withdraw, the first being following the 2023-2024 winter term.

I'm getting pretty close to the 180 attempted credits limit (I only have 37 left). I still need 34 credits for graduation, but I started UBC in the 2021/2022 session, so 2028/2029 would be my last year in the 7 year limit. I was thinking about using my year away from UBC to take some course equivalents at another institution , just to lower the number of credits left to graduate.

I'm feeling kinda lost and I'm not sure what to do. What are my chances of even being readmitted (again) at this point? Should I even bother to reapply next year or is it just over for me

Hi, I’m an incoming second year. I was looking at possible minor options and I’m considering a minor in commerce. However, I’m concerned about how it would affect my GPA since I’m interested in med or optometry after undergrad. My GPA is ok at the moment, but the averages for commerce classes are in the 70’s and I don’t want my average to drop drastically. I was thinking that a commerce minor might allow me to have a backup plan to work a corporate job if grad school doesn’t work out for me.

I know this is kinda an untraditional minor for people in my major so I was wondering if anyone’s done this? And would it actually help me career-wise or should I just stick to FNH or maybe consider a minor in something else?

Edit: Also I should add that in order to apply for this minor, I need econ 101, 102 and math 100. I have already done econ 101 and math 100, so the only thing I’m missing is econ 102.

Hi guys, I got admitted to UBC!! I'm so excited. That being said, on my email they say "While an official high school transcript is not required to finalize your offer of admission, I encourage you to have an official copy sent to our office as some coursework may be required for registration purposes". My second half of senior year, I didn't do too hot; I didn't fail any classes or anything but least to say I got senioritis. I already did 30+ credits of courses at my current uni too.

I'm just extremely paranoid, they can't rescind my offer for shitty senior high school scores that happened a year ago, can they? BTW they should already have my high school transcript on file, because I've already sent it, but apparently they don't.

So, I was on a trip recently, and I missed my housing offer. I reached out to multiple people in the housing department, and they all basically said that first-year on-campus housing is currently full, and there's not much they can really do. It's looking like I might end up having to search for off-campus housing, which would kinda be a big issue, especially this close to the school year. Is anyone else in the same situation as me/ does anyone know anything I can do in this situation?

I reallly like music. To the point of which my playlists on Spotify have been capped at 10K songs, currently my second one is at 5500 songs, and this one is the one that has been on REPEAT.

However, I know little about actually making it myself, in the sense of the production needed. I mean asides from garage banding during elementary classes, or recording random humming and melodies one might create in the shower, or on the bus home or even while walking, to jotting down some lyrics on your notes app. I feel like everyone has this bug in them to just CREATE.

I am working full time at a kids camp for the summer, and today we had this amazing music producer come in and make music with the kids! Just by being around everyone, I was totally amazed and blown away with the creative liberty someone can have to create literally ANYTHING and EVERYTHING they can possibly create. It was filled with so much positivity, and belief that you can literally create whatever you put your mind to and it was truly inspiring. Everyone seemed enjoy themselves to the fullest with the experience.

That being said, it kind of made me want to make this post and really start to create some music! Well, to be frank making solo music ALONE, without knowing very little, for me is very daunting. I think that it would be a very uphill battle to climb alone, and something I WISH I had full time to really get into. However by making this post, I was wondering if there are different people that know certain aspects of music making that could potentially come together and collaborate with a student band with me!

What I would bring is creativity and passion in lyrics, and melodies I would say I have a knack for catchy beats (though that can be said by anyone!). But truly, instead of letting this summer's free time be passed doomscrolling or sleeping in, why not try something new? I am going into my fourth year now, and I have realized that I never really entertained any hobbies outside of recreational sports to get that additionoal boost of physical acitivty.

So PLEASEE if you are reading this, and you either A) know a lot about music, or B) know very little like me but have that creative part of you ITCHING to at least start in the direction of making music, please reach out! I hope to create an instagram gc, with people who are interested and we can go from there!

Excited to join the Vancouver campus this coming September but a bit worried about commuting there and getting to and from classes.

In terms of getting to campus, I’d love to bring my car bc I may be staying late some nights to do research and don’t want to take transit if possible. But I know parking in or near campus is either expensive or dismal or both. Any advice?? I was thinking I’d park as close as possible and bring a foldable bike and bike the rest.

And in terms of getting to and from classes, I remember the campus being huge. I’ve looked up some of my buildings and they while they don’t seem impossible I think a foldable bike will give me some relief. What do you think??

My parents won’t be able to help me move and I can’t drive nor do I have a car, so I’m currently researching ways I can move in solo. My first thought is getting an xl uber but I’m not sure if it’ll fit all my stuff (I have 4 large containers) and it seems a bit pricey. If that’s my best option I’m fine with that, but if anyone has experience moving alone please let me know what methods you recommend and how it went for you.

Hi everyone, I graduated from honours MBIM with a minor in data science this May. I'm finishing up a USRA in August and then I have no idea what to do about getting a job. I'd love to do something research related as a research assistant (and I know I'm qualified), but I can't seem to find more than a handful of positions to apply to. Is there some sort of central place that UBC posts research assistant positions besides the internal Workday system? Is it totally uncouth to email random labs that I'm interested in asking if they have space/funding for a research assistant? Do any of you guys know someone who's looking for a research assistant? I'm honestly okay with anything, I'd just like to stay somewhat in the research world before I (hopefully) do grad school.

Writing this while crying and absolutely gutted. I worked hard to achieve and maintain a 90 average at UBC while juggling part-time jobs, hoping it would help me get a scholarship to do two exchange semesters, just to find out one month before I'm supposed to go that I didn't get any of the scholarships I applied to. I feel like I can't breathe. I have no idea how I am going to support myself for my year abroad. It's so stupid, but I was really counting on getting one of the scholarships, and now I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do anymore. None of this feels worth it anymore. I don't know what to do.

I’m curious how many applications it’s been taking everyone to land an internship or job!

I’ll go first:

Internship #1 (last year, off cycle)
• 160+ applications, 13 first rounds

Internship #2 (this summer):
• 60ish applications, 2 first rounds

Internship #3 (just locked it in for an off cycle internship):
• 25+ applications, 6 first rounds

I just thought it’d be encouraging for people to see how others are also struggling and applying for A LOT of jobs/internships before actually landing one

And also to see what it’s like for students searching in different industries! Mine were all related to finance in some way

As you can see, the first one really helped me build credibility and get interviews much easier afterwards.

For anyone who has taken FNH 200, especially in the summer online second semester w Judy, what advice would u give for the flexible assessment? I finished the first midterm today but I am not sure how hard she marks the assignments so if anyone has advice on how to maximize the grade lmk!
