I really need to vent and find out if anyone else has survived a mother like this, because I genuinely feel like I'm losing my mind.
What hurts the most is that I had been away from home for two years. I honestly believed that time apart might change something. I came back hoping for peace, a fresh start, and a safe place to heal. Instead, within days, I was thrown straight back into the same toxic cycle of suspicion, criticism, and constant monitoring. It honestly felt like a cruel slap in the face.
My mother has this deeply toxic mindset where she views almost everything I do through a sexual or male-centered lens. If I do something that makes me happy, dress nicely, take care of myself, or simply exist as a young woman, she assumes I'm doing it to attract boys.
Recently, because this environment has completely destroyed my self-esteem and years of comments from other people have made me deeply insecure about my appearance, I don't enjoy going to social gatherings or meeting people when I'm not feeling good about myself. Today she mocked me for avoiding social events and implied that I was acting like some overly modest woman hiding from everyone. She heavily hinted that there must be some boy controlling me or influencing how I dress and behave. The constant attacks on my character are exhausting.
The worst part is the gaslighting. Whenever I try to talk about how much she's hurt me or defend myself, she immediately changes the narrative and portrays herself as the victim. She tells other people that she has done nothing wrong and that it's all in my imagination. She makes me sound mentally unstable, as if I'm inventing the abuse, and it leaves me questioning my own reality while feeling even more isolated.
Edit: What makes me feel even more alone is that my father has always been emotionally, financially, and physically unavailable. He is technically present in the family, but he has never been someone I could rely on for support, protection, or comfort.
Because of that, I feel like I have nobody I can truly trust. Every relative, family friend, or person I try to confide in eventually ends up taking my mother’s side. Sometimes it genuinely feels like people are more invested in keeping me obedient and unhappy than in understanding what I am actually going through.
The same thing happened with my career. I never wanted to pursue neet, but I was pressured and emotionally forced into preparing for it. I spent years trying to meet expectations that were never really mine, and in the end I could not clear the exam. Instead of accepting that this path is not for me, my mother still keeps insisting that I should “try one more time” and start preparing again. Hearing this repeatedly feels suffocating, because it reminds me that my own wishes, interests, and mental state have never really mattered in the decisions made about my life.
To avoid explosive arguments, I usually stay quiet. But suppressing everything is destroying me from the inside. Sometimes she pushes me so far that I experience intense, frightening urges to physically lash out at her. I hate feeling this way and I don't want to act on those thoughts, but years of bottling up my emotions have turned me into a pressure cooker that's constantly about to explode.
On top of all this, I'm also dealing with PCOD, which has completely turned my life upside down. The hormonal imbalance, combined with living in a constantly hostile environment, has left me struggling with severe mood swings, overwhelming anxiety, and constant irritability. Trying to regulate these emotions while living with someone who continuously triggers and provokes me feels almost impossible.
Sometimes I genuinely feel that parents with this kind of regressive, misogynistic mindset should never have children, especially daughters. When the people who brought you into this world look at your clothes, your expressions, your decision to isolate yourself, or your behavior, and immediately question your character or morality, it breaks something deep inside you.
I feel trapped, mentally exhausted, and completely drained. If anyone has lived with a parent like this, how did you survive without losing yourself?
