Fold origami for mental health!

Join What I Wish You Knew, a community art project for mental health awareness. It is a collection of messages that people wish they could share with someone in their life.

If you'd like to participate, you can submit an anonymous message here.

Each message will be folded into a paper petal and become part of a kusudama (origami flower ball).

We're also planning a free origami workshop for mid-August, but we're still finalizing some logistics, so I wanted to share this in the meantime.

I don't think most introverts hate networking.

I think they just don't enjoy the way most networking events are designed.

At least, that's how Mei and I(Jessie) have always felt.

Whenever someone invited me to a networking event, it wasn't the idea of meeting new people that made me hesitate. It was everything that usually came with it.

Walking into a room where you are told to just talk to people.

Sometimes, everyone already seems to know someone. Or you are trying to figure out whether you're interrupting a conversation.

Or maybe you feel like you should have the perfect answer ready when someone asks, "So, what do you do?"

And sometimes it can feel like everyone is trying to sell something before they've even had a chance to get to know each other.

The funny thing is, I actually enjoy meeting people.

I love hearing about what someone cares about, how they ended up doing what they do, or the random stories that somehow come up when nobody is trying to impress anyone.

It made Mei and me wonder if maybe introverts don't dislike networking as much as they dislike environments that don't really make room for the way they naturally connect. And many of us crave deeper conversations beyond just the what do you do question.

That thought stayed with us for a long time, and that is what helped us to create our events and what we named: Slow Networking 🦥 for Introverts.

We didn't want to create another event where people were expected to "work the room."

We wanted to create an evening where conversations could take their time, and where people did not have to worry about what to say or do. Mei and I create the activities and prompts, so all you have to do is focus on connecting!

We wanted that space where it was perfectly okay to spend twenty minutes talking to one person instead of trying to meet twenty people.

We spend a surprising amount of time thinking about the questions we ask.

Not because we're looking for clever icebreakers, but because we've seen what happens when someone is asked something that invites a real story instead of a rehearsed answer.

One person who's now been to several of our gatherings told us something that has stayed with me.

He said our prompts helped him articulate himself, and that he talked far more than he normally would at networking events.

That was probably one of the nicest things anyone could have said.

It reminded us why we started doing this in the first place.

We're hosting another Slow Networking gathering this Thursday near Dupont Station.

We'll have two small sessions, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, with a maximum of 12 people in each group.

This time we're also experimenting with something new.

During the second half of the event, we're setting aside some time for group brainstorming sessions.

Sometimes talking through an idea with thoughtful people helps you see something you'd never have arrived at on your own, and we thought it would be fun to make space for that.

There is a ticket price of $25, which helps cover the venue and allows us to keep these gatherings small.

Here are a few of the top $ free watch parties today.

Nathan Phillips Square

Big screen, some seating and lots of good angles. There are a few food trucks and the city hall cafe is pretty good value. There are 2 small soccer fields where people play and lots of space. This is gonna be fun and busy today

Evergreen Brickworks

This one will be outdoors with lots of room. Just get there early because Brickworks on a weekend is always packed anyway. The atmosphere so far has been more family-friendly and relaxed than super rowdy.

UofT Front Campus
It's obviously very student heavy, but this is basically in the heart of UofT on their big lawn with a giant screen. A great viewing option that won't be quiet.

Humber College
They've done the second half of the World Cup really well. They have free screenings and live music by their students. Plus food trucks and drinks.

Stackt Market

Adidas took over Stackt and the back area has a big screen and lots of room for people. But it will be full today and they will cut it off when it's packed. There's lots of food and activities around there and you'll close by the official Fan Fest at the Bentway.

Pride House (Sugar Beach)

George Brown's Waterfront Campus has an inclusive indoor space showing all the games and it will be open again today. Right next to Sugar Beach where there will be a dance party at 8:30p

Brazilfest @ Earlscourt Park

If you want to go have a great day at a park with Brazilian entertainment and food and watch the finals, this is perfect. Bring blankets or chairs of course.

Scadding Court Market
A great west end option that's at Bathurst and Dundas. Their food options are always great too, laid back vibes here.

Columbus Centre
They have been a soccer hub all summer and today will be another great day there.

Jamii Hub
This non profit is throwing an indoor viewing party today in The Esplanade. They will have drinks and food with proceeds helping their cause.

Parkdale Hall
Some politician is hosting this, I forget which one. That means free snacks and drinks and an indoor option.

Authentic Indonesian food, live music, and cultural performances at Sankofa Square downtown. This is worth timing around the rain if you're into good food. If you get there for noon, you may beat the rain. Plus, in my experience, they sell out of the good food QUICK.

Weather will be annoying but the art and vibe are worth it. And might be less crowded than it would otherwise have been. They are handing out masks if the air gets bad. For their 20th anniversary, they have a wedding theme and welcoming people to come as wedding guests. Will a lot of people do that? Not sure.

Minds In Motion STEM Inc. (MIMS) is a hosting a robotics competition at Aurora Public Library on August 4. The competition is meant for people with no robotics experience who want to have fun, win some prize pool, and get free lunch.

Entry is $ free, you can compete in teams or sign up solo and be paired up later!

So excited to share this upcoming Dungeon Crawler Carl trivia night at Steadfast Brewing Co near Lansdowne & College (301 Lansdowne Ave). I am a huge fan and really looking forward to this one, would love to meet some other fans!!

Doors open at 6:30, trivia starts at 7:30 and is on books 1-5, possibly 6 (will double check).

Costumes encouraged!
