Queen’s Park Swizzle

Post image
101 Upvotes

For some reason the Queen’s Park Swizzle came into my head today.
I’ve never even had one.

I went down a rabbit hole of what the right rum is, and whether or not it needs a float.

I found Make and Drink’s fantastic video and went from there.

60ml El Dorado 12

30ml Appleton Signature.

30ml Strained Lime Juice.

15ml 2:1 Simple

3 Dashes of Angostura

Small clump of Mint

Shell of half a lime.

Swizzle everything.

Garnish with more mint.

What do you think?

Be kind I’m only recently experimenting with home bartending. I got really excited and invited some friends over, and they requested Mai Tai’s

I thought I got everything for a bit of a take on the Royal Hawaiian, but being new I missed a key component: the Orgeat.

What else do I have that’s nutty? Well, I substituted more simple syrup (rich) AND…. I don’t know if I’ll get crucified for this but, walnut bitters. Not gonna lie, I loved it. What do y’all think? Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

1 oz Bacardi Light Rum

1 oz Brugal Anejo Rum

1/4 oz Cointreau

1 oz Orange Juice

1 oz Pineapple Juice

1/2 oz Lime Juice

1/4 oz Lemon Juice

1/2 oz Simple Syrup

3 dashes of Walnut Bitters

Here’s your chance to share what you’ve been thinking without worrying about starting a conversation, asking a dumb question, or anything else. If you’ve got a thought you’ve been thinking about tiki, share it here!

Torpedo Juice was first mixed in World War II and made from pineapple juice and the 180-proof grain alcohol fuel used in US Navy torpedo motors. The US Navy then added poisonous additives to the fuel alcohol to discourage people. Recipe was two parts ethyl alcohol and three parts pineapple juice.

Trader Vic’s in Emeryville?

If I’m more of a tiki cocktail enthusiast rather than a tiki esthetic guy, is a visit to this Trader Vic’s worth my time?

Inflatable Fish Floats / Glass Alternatives

Hi Everyone, we recently moved and I am rebuilding my home tiki bar. The space is significantly larger than the last so a lot of room for more decorations. Most of the money though has gone into building the actual bar, lighting, fridge, freezer, AV stuff, etc. I made a few purchases to enhance my collection of tiki stuff I brought with me to fill out the space but really want more glass fish floats.

I saw that Tikiland Trading is now selling a four pack of inflatable fish floats that look great in the photos. I have scoured the internet looking for something similar to make my own and have been hitting dead ends. Finding a 6-10" seamless inflatable translucent yet colored (blue, red, green, etc) option has been near impossible.

Long term, I want to invest in some nice glass ones to go with what I have already but a little short on budget given the build out. Anyone else found some glass alternatives in the 6-10" range that look nice?

Thanks for the input!

Goood morning Rum Runners and Adventurers!

My family and I are heading down to the Coast to visit Clearwater.

Are there any must visit tiki spots or adjacent spots? I saw the Morgans Cove Pirate spot. But wondering what’s closer?

Bahia Sling

I picked up some Tempus Fugit Creme de Cacao recently and found this recipe when looking for ideas on how to use it. Definite tiki vibes and a fun refreshing drink.

Bahia Sling

  • 1½ oz Cachaça (I used Avuá)
  • 1 oz Fresh lime juice
  • ¾ oz Passion fruit syrup
  • ½ oz Crème de Cacao

Garnish:

  • Lime wheel
  • Sprig of mint
  • Edible flower

Instructions:

  1. Add the cachaça, lime juice, passion fruit syrup, and crème de cacao to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add a small scoop of crushed ice and shake briefly but vigorously.
  3. Strain over fresh crushed ice into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with the mint sprig, lime wheel, and edible flower.

Wife and I got burnt out on our standard house margarita and decided to jump into tiki. Just getting started with this pickup of a few foundational bottles. Any gaps that could use filling or recommendations?

Just really getting into tiki and rum, and it appears I've fallen into the rabbit hole. About a month ago I had Bacardi Superior and some bitters. Just got a shipment from K&L today with Worthy Park 109, Rum Fire, and Rhum JM Terroir Volcanique.

That semi-annual sale email hit my inbox right after an email about a raise and damage was done! Excited to finally get my hands on some bottles not available in PA. If anyone has any recommendations for the Planetary coconut rum I’ll happily take them. 🤩

Plantaray Original Dark

This is one of the few "specially" rums available where I live. I don't see it called out often in recipes. What drinks does it work well in?

My hope is that it's good enough to be a "workhorse" on my shelf that can replace some special-order-only bottles. If the consensus is that it kinda sucks I guess I'll keep plugging along with the high-price, hard-to-get bottles.
