These have been pretty popular with rainbows, coastal cutthroat, and brook trout the last few weeks for me. Fairly simple to tie with a couple colors of brassie wire (or this in 0.2mm) and whatever you want for thorax and hackle.

The one with the black fur in the back is the Yamsi Special found in Dave Hughes' Wet Flies. I ran into that earlier this week after I'd been tying these in a few variations, so I figured I'd tie some of those up too. Fur "hackled" wet flies have worked well for me both with western and tenkara fishing.

I am very new to Tenkara and wanted to get the Maxcatch Triple Zoom (short version). It comes in a combo starter kit, but I'm planning on just getting the rod.

This leaves me without any line. I live in Germany, and it's quite hard to find Tenkara equipment here. I asked ChatGPT, and it seems a 3.0# level line is basically just 0.285mm (0.011″) Flouro line. I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with this and if this would work (I would probably paint it neon orange).

I am experienced in UL fishing, and also fish flies with my spinning rod.

Hey guys. After 12 years I'm finally in the market for a Japanese made rod. Looking for user experience and reviews of the rods in the title. Wanted to try for a Tenkara Bum 40 but it seems like they're out of stock.

I would get either rod in 6:4. Only have budget for one or the other.

Spin fisher man hoping to get my first Tenkara rod. Just have a few questions that I hope you guys could kindly answer!

1. Do Tenkara rods have a power/action similar to spinning rods? If so, is there one that's great in most applications?

2. Am I limited on what type of flies I can throw? Obviously I won't be able to throw streamers, but can I throw nymphs, emergers, and dry flies?

3. Is the tippet line the exact same as fly fishing line? Can I just use fly fishing tippet on the tenkara furled line?

4. What happens if the line (not the furled line) attached to the tenkara rod itself breaks?

5. Are there any brands based in Canada or brands that ship to Canada?

I'm debating on buying this sling. I currently run a vest plus a small sling to haul a water filter and snacks. I think i'd like a sling that can haul an insulated water bottle plus some gear. I'm concerned the weight of the water bottle will make the sling uncomfortable and i'm also concerned the cross strap wont fit across my 46" chest (i've returned one sling so far because of this). If anyone owns one, I'd love to hear about it.

Hi All. I'll be heading to Japan in a couple of months and plan on picking up a rod or two. Looking for advice on what to go for.

So I'm a long time rod and real fly fisher from Victoria, Australia. We have beautiful small to mid-sized streams with healthy wild rainbows and browns populations. I have dabbled with Tenkara with a cheap but fun Aventik 9" 6:4 rod but got totally owned by a surprise 16" brown on a tiny stream. Also have the equally cheap Maxcatch triple zoom 8'3" - 10'6". Haven't fished it yet (closed season here right now) but has a lot more backbone for the smaller, tight and overgrown streams.

So my question for rods to buy in Japan. I'm tossing up between two single length rods, say Nissin Royal Stage 7:3 in 320 and 360 lengths for my more open streams or am I better off with a Nissan 2 way Pro Spec 360 7:3 to cover both lengths in one rod? I am slightly concerned about the reports of breakages with the Pro Specc though.

Typical fish size is 8 - 12" trout with the occasional surprise up to 16 or 18". Definitely leaning towards 7:3 to have a bit more authority in tight spots and also throw small bead heads as well as kabari and dries.

Any advice?

First time going on a trout fishing trip. Hiked through some beautiful streams and fished along the way.
Primarily caught brookies, then one rainbow, and one cutbow (which I didn't get a good picture of😪). This was a nice switch up from warm water fishing in the summer heat.

I don't have waders yet, and haven't really found a need. Eventually I might. For now my gear is shorts, cheap amazon neoprene socks and trail runners. I have also tried cheap amazon nylon "water proof" socks and I am happy enough with how those work. I wonder if the Backcountry Skinz Liquid Lock socks are an upgrade over the Amazon neoprene stuff I have been using.

I also kayak on occasion and occasionally use 0.5 Hydroskin pants for wading if its a little chilly, but mostly its just shorts and socks.

Looking to get into tenkara for some alpine fishing. I have tons of fly gear that was gifted to me but can't figure out fly fishing for the life of me. Seen this rod on marketplace and wondering if this is a good entry or I should look elsewhere. Only found 1 link featuring this rod. I'll leave in the comments.

Hello! I just got my first Tenkara Rod, that being the Ito from Tenkara USA. I picked up the rod because I travel to the north and Midwest quite often but I live in northern Louisiana and typically fish lakes.

Any tips on fishing murky Louisiana lakes with a tenkara rod and fly? Can it be relatively effective? I see most of the lake posts specifically discussing alpine lakes, ive got hot, Murky, and sometimes vegetation filled waters nearby.

Hi all, I’ve been fishing tenkara for almost 2 years. I started on a TUSA Hane, taking it on hikes and backpacking trips, before getting a tiny ten 3 for smaller waters. Eventually I got a dragontail shadowfire 365 and use that as my daily driver. I sometimes target larger bass and carp, so I also got a TUSA Amago when it was on sale. I primarily fish the Shadowfire and alternate to the tiny ten or amago when circumstances require.

I’d like to upgrade my daily driver from the Shadowfire. I like the feel and length of it but feel like it’s time to get into some nicer rods. Any suggestions??

Husband loves to fish, has been his whole life. He's been wanting a Tenkara rod for a while now. Our friend that's been in Japan has been having no luck in finding an authentic rod. Work has been rough for him, so I want to make him happy :)

He has 4 or 5 different backpacks for different fishing adventures. He has like 40+ rods and reels for no reason. He has experience in fly fishing, regular fishing, crabbing, etc. He mostly goes for trout, bass, salmon- but is not shy of trying to fish all.

What's your best recommendation for a Tenkara rod?

I've been fly fishing for a while, but I'm interested in trying tenkara for travel because it seems so compact. For someone with fly fishing experience, what rod and setup would you recommend to get started?

What should I look for in rod length and action. For reference I live in Western NC so it the blue ridge mountain for Brooks and Stocker Rainbows.

I had my Lillian break but not the rod tip. I can buy Lillian’s from a retailer in the USA (in Canada) and it $6 for a pack of them but $30 duty and shipping. Is there a diy Lillian - it a hollow piece of string right???? Any suggestions?
