Northern Trail

I just finished a rewatch of Northern Trail and wanted to know what everyone thought of this season and the cast!

I like this season, even though it's neither the most adventurous nor the most dramatic season. I feel like you would not see most of these cast members on modern reality TV, but that's part of the appeal of the season. Old school RW and RR had the most interesting cast dynamics - you really get into who these people are and what they've been through and what they're about.

My thoughts on the cast:

Anne - Every time I watch a season that Anne is on I'm reminded of how annoying I found her. However, it's a harmless kind of annoying. She just seemed like she needed so much attention and was constantly melodramatic. Someone on the season mentioned in passing that she looked like Nancy Kerrigan and that's all I can see now when I see her, lol. Her relationship with Tim the doctor was interesting?

Jon - He is such a weird mixture of silly, goofy, and quirky but also at the very same time extremely serious? You would not see someone like him on a TV show nowadays just because the producers wouldn't know what to do with him - he's not easily boxed into an archetype. I felt bad for him at points because it seemed like he was on the outs of the group but he had a genuine heart and always tried his best.

Dan - the All American boy. I mean he literally is just the embodiment of "all American", right down to being the son of an NFL player. He's so chill, athletic, good at everything. I feel like I can think neither here nor there of him, because while he was cool he didn't really contribute too much to the vibe of the season.

Tara - the All American girl; no wonder she and Dan were an item! I feel like they are two of the most "normal" RW / RR / Challenge alumni of all time. I didn't realize until this rewatch just how young she was on the show. Yes, Roni was the 18 year old stepping away from her mother, but Tara wasn't much more worldly herself and some of her opinions were downright naive. But, she's a cool chick. I wish we saw her on All Stars.

Roni - One of my favorite cast members of all time. First, her voice and accent are so soothing. I could listen to her recite an audiobook. You could tell she was closed off at the beginning of the trip but really opened towards the end (after her outburst after NYC). Even at 18 she was so self-assured, mature, and just approached every situation with such grace. Having her come back for All Stars was such a treat.

Noah - The 90s version of a f#ckboy, lol. With the frosted tips and the single-eared piercings and everything lol. I mean, he was definitely cast to be the flirt, but at the same time, that wasn't his whole persona. That's what I miss about this old school style casting. Even Noah had depth to him and was interesting to get to know.

I liked the "American summer road trip" vibe of this season. The missions weren't always the most exciting, but it was cool just to watch the cast go to different cities and meet people and just be young people out in the world all over the US and Canada. The drama really only came down to Roni blowing up (rather deservedly so IMO) on Dan, Tara, and Anne after the NYC stop, but they immediately apologized and you could just tell that after that, they all came to a better understanding of each other. They tried to make some sort of drama out of Dan having a love triangle but both he and Tara were too chill about it lol. I love the 90s backing tracks too!!

🗺️ The time Adam, Blair, Ellen, Sophia, Steve and Jisela somehow arrived in the middle of the Sahara Desert and immediately failed their first mission after Jisela fell off a helicopter, fell off a camel and threw up in some poor local mans bowl. Meanwhile, the gang verbally abuses a herd of camels.

Episode where they had to perform in Drag

I have a random memory of two teams having to perform in drag. And one team clearly did better (with i think a spice girls song) but we're knocked down a peg because one of the guys wasn't wearing shoes. And the other team did the Shoop Shoop song and won and then the losing team made signs or said Shoop Shoop sucks.

Does this ring a bell to anyone? Could've also been the challenege

MTV The Making of Road Rules Season 2

Real World gets all the love and attention, so it was nice to see something that gave Road Rules attention.

RW's crew works hard to pull its show together, but RR's crew does a lot more heavy lifting since its cast is always on the go doing physical things.

Though it had its rough spots (someone broke into the Winnie in New Orleans and stole production tapes, someone on the crew quit, and someone was almost fired), the Road Rules crew brought it together to produce a great show.

Roni Martin on her Challenge All Stars return, Road Rules Northern Trail, and more! EP #143

From 2022. I enjoyed this Mike Lewis interview with Roni.

Jon and Beth from Real World have a podcast, and Jon's been saying that Road Rulers are RW rejects, but Roni really wanted to be on RR because of the opportunity to travel and see the world. She said she didn't want to be on RW.

Her anecdote about how she got on RR was interesting.
