Question / Suggestion Risks of parking a motorcycle in N. Providence?

I am meeting some people at a bar on Smith Street in N. Providence and a few people told me "I wouldn't ride your motorcycle there, someone will definitely mess with it, maybe even knock it over". I'd be there from 6pm to maybe 10 or 11pm.

Anyone here familiar with the area and agrees with that?

Question / Suggestion Looking for mental health professionals who specialize in people on the autism spectrum

Upvotes

I (37M) have autism and generalized anxiety disorder, and I'm very high functioning, but I also suffer from anger issues, and I've tried several methods to keep them in check, but with little success. Today, I had an appointment with my psychiatrist to discuss this, and not only did she not give me much in the way of help despite me telling her some possible causes, but I am now considering firing her as well as my current therapist. If anyone knows any mental health professionals in this state who are better-equipped to treat people on the autism spectrum, please let me know.

Question / Suggestion Does Pawtucket have the most speed trap cameras?

I’m talking red light cameras, speed traps, school zones. I don’t go through often but I swear Newport ave in Pawtucket is just FILLED with these traps. I really feel like every few months there’s a new one that pops up.

Out of all places in RI I feel like this city has the most or at the very least has the most so close together? That’s just Newport ave too. It’s also down cottage, benefit, armistice, near those schools next to hasbro….they’re multiplying!!! 😂

Also speaking of those schools next to Hasbro, what are the actual times those school zone cameras are on? Because I’ve been told it’s set during specific days and times, however the yellow flashing light will be going off even at 7pm on a Friday night? Or it could be a Sunday morning and people on that road (Newport ave) are going 20 as if school is in session rather than the regular 30 lol

Discussion Second Beach

This used to the the best beach in the state. Clean, never too crowded, good swimming. But since I’ve lived here the fees have nearly doubled (40$ a day for weekend parking!!), and we have a nonresident pass which was grossly expensive, yet they still make us wait in the mega long lines with the paddocks who need to stop and pay. The beach is more crowded than ever despite the price and half the time it’s coated in red tide, aggressive seagulls, and rude people blaring loud tunes. We used to be okay with paying a bit more for the peace and beauty of this beach but now it feels no different than Misquamicut or Scarborough.

Question / Suggestion I am looking for apple trees for sale, heirloom varieties

My puppy stripped the bark off two of my trees this year so I am looking to replace them. I am looking for heirloom variety so no Home Depot or Lowe’s, but does anyone know of any farms or orchards around here that sell actual apple trees? I am in Rhode Island, but will travel to nearby Connecticut or mass. Thanks!

Question / Suggestion Updating address on vehicle registration

I moved within the state & I’d like my registration to reflect the updated address- if I have updated my address on the dmv site last week & order a duplicate registration cert, will my address be updated? Or is it necessary to go into the DMV?

I don’t mind going in if I need to, but if I can skip it obviously I will lol. (& I know I could do it through AAA, but my spouse is covered under their parents’ AAA account & we are able to use that for most things we have needed, so it doesn’t make sense to get another one for me)

(ETA: The reason I need/would like the updated address on my registration is because it will make the parking permit for my new neighborhood cheaper!)

Thanks! 🫶🏻

A massive sinkhole opened up at a construction site in Providence Tuesday evening, according to authorities.

In a social media post, the Providence Police Department confirmed the sinkhole opened up near Blackstone Boulevard and Irving Avenue.

Drivers are being asked to seek alternative routes while workers assess the sinkhole, though one side of the roadway is still open.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told 12 News he expects the sinkhole to be repaired by Wednesday morning.

The sinkhole opened up as a strong line of thunderstorms moved across the state.

Question / Suggestion Apartment concern

Heya!

I currently reside in Coventry, RI in a first floor apartment which I’ve been in for a few months.

My landlord has promised by the summer that we’d be having a new front porch and stairs installed. When we moved in the porch apparently used to have steps to exit through the front door. However, the landlord put a piece of plywood and screwed it in to block off the exit. I was hopeful and had believed my landlord when they stated this when I initially signed the lease. I was slightly hesitant as I was concerned about the fire safety / fire code situation as typically most apartments need to have at least one exit for each apartment floor (there is an upstairs apartment). This is to my basic understanding of any apartment of having an exit and fire escapes.

There’s a side door that my upstairs neighbor and I share to exit the apartment with a shared hallway.

It’s now been 7 months and no new porch or even temporary steps to be able to enter my apartment vs using the shared hallway. Which the side entrance is supposed to be the private entrance for the upstairs Neighbor.

All and all, I’m sick of paying 2200$ for an “unfinished” and possibly unsafe apartment. God for bid there was a fire and I couldn’t escape as technically the side door isn’t a direct exit to the outside it’s to a hallway.

Should I contact the fire Marshall? Or is that spiteful? I don’t want to upset my landlord but to charge us such a crazy amount for rent and lock us in for a year just to never get what is promised or should’ve been done before we moved in.

I’ve asked my landlord several times and their excuse is “I am getting very close to replacing the porch. I thought it would be done already. But I need to renew the permit”. Won’t tell me what permit and I’ve heard that they’ve needed a permit since day 1.

Please let me know what I should do. I think it’s unfair to pay so much for an apartment that is possibly not up to code and we were practically pushed into moving into with false promises.

Thank you

News Rhode Island went all in on the World Cup. Many businesses think it paid off.

Rhode Island made a concerted effort to make the most of World Cup euphoria. It created a non-profit to help prepare for the tournament, and took advantage of the state’s proximity to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., to position Providence as an alternative to official host city Boston. A free trolley service from downtown Providence made it easier for fans to explore the area. And the Ghana Black Stars team chose Bryant University in Smithfield as its home base, bringing with them a wave of excitement as the tournament began.

Providence’s Fan Zone recorded approximately 125,000 visitors during the tournament, current estimates from the city show, and became the only official FIFA-sanctioned location in New England after Boston shut down its Fan Festival 16 days into the five week tournament, when the World Cup group matches were over.

“Our primary concern was getting people to Providence to watch the games, to enjoy the culture, and to spend some money while they’re here,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said in an interview. “What I’ve heard is that people came.”

Discussion Anyone else feel like road rage and impatience has increased a lot the last few years?

I’m NOT saying this is new. There’s always been impatient drivers and people who have serious road rage.

My point for this post is I feel like it’s gotten worse over the last few years and I’m wondering if anyone else has had similar thoughts.

There’s so many examples I can give. Luckily none of them involve me and another drive but I’ve witnessed them happen right near me.

- Light just turned green and the person behind the guy in front of the line honks the horn. It just changed my man. Also it’s probably safer to wait a slight 1-2 seconds just incase some jackass on the other side of the road wants to run their red light.

- When you stop to let pedestrians cross on the side walk, especially if it’s while you’re turning right. The person behind you will honk the horn, put their hands up in the air and then try to cut around you.

- Someone starts tailgating another driver because they’re driving not only the speed limit, but more often than not quite a bit above it. (Also why is it at least 90% of the time pick up trucks? Does the height of the vehicle change your perception so you don’t realize just how close you are to the car in front of you?)

- A person is trying to take a left or right but they can’t move because there’s way to much traffic coming from the driver side of traffic and the person behind them lays the horn. (Ahh yes you should totally drive into oncoming traffic that way the person behind you can…also drive into oncoming traffic?)

And now that I’m typing this out, I just remembered something that’s happened to me a few times.

I’ll be driving through a parking lot at a normal, safe speed. Not too fast, not crawling either. Then someone comes flying across the parking spaces at what feels like 30-40 mph instead of driving through the actual lanes. So I’m moving straight and they are driving diagonally and now we both end up slamming on the brakes, and then THEY throw their hands up at me like I’m the problem.

Dude… you’re the one cutting across empty parking spaces at high speed. I’m driving where I’m supposed to be. If you’re going to do that 1. At least slow down and be cautious of oncoming traffic and 2. Don’t get mad if you have to slam your breaks for something you did wrong.

So yeah anyone else feel the way I do? Again I can’t emphasize enough I’m aware there’s always been bad drivers and people with anger issues or impatience. Im asking if you noticed it increase a tremendous amount over the years. Especially 2020 and up.

Question / Suggestion Looking for Johnny Cakes mentor

Been trying to dial in this classic RI recipe with difficulty. I'm cooking on a cast iron pan, plenty of fat in the pan, medium heat (and heated thoroughly) but still have some trouble with sticking and the cakes are still taking about 20 minutes to fully cook, whereas I keep reading 3-5 minutes per side.

If you're a wiz with this recipe I'd appreciate being able to DM and share pics and get feedback!
