Left clutch and wallet on 8:10pm ferry last night from block island to new London

Took the 8:10 ferry off the island last night and after getting in my uber I realized I left a small LV clutch which contained a maroon Gucci wallet on the ferry. My uber wouldn’t turn around…. called ferry services they are saying they don’t have it but no one has used any of my cards so — maybe a Good Samaritan found it and is trying to get it back to me? I never do dumb stuff like leaving items behind and I had just recently treated myself to that new wallet after a particularly rough year so, I feel like a complete idiot …. Praying there’s a good person out there and thought this might be worth a shot

Air quality and plans tonight?

Anyone here right now doing anything differently because of the wildfire smoke and air quality? I'm here with my two young kids (both under six), trying to decide what to do tonight. I can't imagine the air quality in our rental house is much better than it is outside, but I'm hesitant to follow through with our plan to bring them to the beach down at the Bluffs this evening to explore. Any thoughts?

Tips for a first timer.

I've never been to Block, even after living less than a mile from the ferry in PJ while at URI. Finally planning a day trip in the coming weeks, and then an actual vacation in September/October ish. Looking for any general advice/tips you'd like to share, and also answers to some questions.

  1. Is it doable to spend the day there with no transportation; not bringing a car or bike, not renting a bike or moped? I don't really imagine that we'll be looking to do much exploring on our day trip, with it being more of a beach day, but are taxis readily available if we wish to take one? And how much, approximately, would a taxi cost?

  2. What beach should we go to? I know people won't want to give up their hidden gems, but out of the popular ones, which is the best? I hear mixed things about Ballard's. We're thinking that it'd just be the easiest option, because we probably wouldn't take beach chairs on the ferry, and renting either chairs or an umbrella seems like a good solution. And, being near a bar is definitely a bonus. Are you able to go to the beach at Ballard's without a rental? Are there other bars on the beach you'd recommend instead? We're planning for a weekday, so we don't need to account for the crowds as much.

  3. Best spots for coffee/lunch/souviners/etc on the island. I know there's a limited number of shops and restaurants, but I'd love to hear a concise list of recommendations.

Thanks for reading this far, and for whatever insight you have for me! (Can you tell I'm chronically Type A???)

Current access to Mohegan Bluffs beach?

Been going to BI my entire life but haven’t been the past few years. Mohegan Bluffs is one of my favorite spots on the island but I read about the bottom of the stairs being closed because of erosion. Anyone know the current status? I’m able and willing to hike a bit and take any path. Thank you! ☀️ 🏖️

Pt Judith Parking options for 10 days

Where is the best place to park for 10 days in Pt. Judith? Will be arriving at noon on a Friday. Made the mistake before parking just past the boat and that was $60 for 2 calendar days plus $12 in fees so total $72. OUCH.

Is the best place going straight at the end of the access road? Looks like there is a state lot and another lot there. Is one better than the other? Someone said they didn't like that state lot. They both ae about $180 prepaid for the 10 days thru parking apps.

There is also the lot (state??) across from the Ferry standby lot. Is that one cash only that I have read about?

We also may have to cut the time short so not sure if prepaying is the right way to go. The apps say there is a prepay discount but not sure how much saving that really is.

Update: So <24 hrs that spanned 2 calendar days was $72 at the expensive lot just past the ticket office but the lot at the end of the access road was ~$130 for 9 nights (10 calendar days). Interestingly that lot was less expensive in person than using their web site that said there was a discount for doing online. Yes, better deals taking your car or the plane but sometimes you have to have quick access to a car on the mainland.

Best way to spend a day on BI

My friend and I are planning to take the ferry from New London to spend the day on Block Island later this month (July). We are older women (how did we get old, lol?) We can walk some but due to a disability we can’t walk very long distances. I’m not having luck with car rentals (one place went out of business, another is booked, another advertising an incorrect phone number, voice mail full, etc). Are there taxi tours of the island? What is a good beach to hang out at? Do they rent beach chairs? Where’s a good place to eat? What does everyone recommend?

Im trying to impress a lady with a old world lobster dish.

I know we're not in Maine, and i can't drive up the road and find a guy with $3 per lb lobster out of the front yard, but do yall have any local legends where I can do for fresh crustaceans that isn't Dicks Fish? Looking for the little guy I can build a great relationship with.

Thanks for everything!

Block island Triathlon on August 1

Hello! I was planning on registering for the triathlon on August 1. I booked my lodging back in January when the registration wasn’t open yet. I waited too long, and it is sold out! I am posting in case anyone’s circumstances have changed and they would like to sell/transfer their registration.

Thank you!

Luggage storage for day trip?

My husband and I are doing a day trip to Block Island on our way to a wedding. We’re taking Amtrak up from NJ and won’t have a car. As we will be biking, hiking, and swimming on island, then going to a formal event the next day, we will have either a medium size suitcase and small backpacks or two carryon size suitcases in tow. Are there any inns/hotels on island that offer luggage storage? It would literally be a drag to haul luggage around all day.

Pt. Jude Friday July 3rd Parking

Hi,

Is it realistic to expect parking will be easily attainable this Friday before the fourth? I was thinking maybe getting there ~8am but not sure if that’s good enough.

Thanks for the replies.

Planning a trip - looking for recommendations

Hi! Planning a trip later this summer for some mid week dates - looking for some food recommendations. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been and honestly wasn’t super impressed with some of the places I went to last. (I miss Finns!) any recommendations for places to eat/drink? Best food and/or drinks you can’t live without each time you visit? Will also take some other recommendations of any activity if not a great weather day? Thanks in advance!

How is the ride on the block island ferry?

I am death afraid of vomiting. Is sea sickness common on these rides? I’m not prone to getting seasick but am wondering if it still can be bad? I’ll be leaving at 7pm

I made an enamel pin! 🚤

I lived on Block Island for three long summers above the kitchen of Dead Eye Dick’s from 2002-2004. Since then, I’ve been in Memphis, TN teaching middle school English. I’m thrilled to be visiting the island in July for the first time in 22 years. I made an enamel pin to celebrate the return and I have some available for anyone who’s interested. Check the comments for a link to see the pins. Or hit me up the third weekend of July to meet me and get one :) Looking forward to the return and a breakfast at Ernie’s, another place I worked those summers. Thank you!

e bike rentals on block island?

My boyfriend and I are going to block island on a weekend in july. I heard E bikes are great! I want to know though, how well will it help with the assistance up hills as i heard that the island is very hilly. We both exercise regularly, but i also don't want to feel gassed constantly going up the hills there, i want to enjoy the experience. Will an E bike help with this?

Block island with a baby!

My husband and I are headed to block island later this week with our 4 month old. From my reading it sounds like there are plenty of trails and beaches to walk. But wondering what trails most recommended for a family
With a baby - looking for trails that would accommodate stroller or in a carrier.

TIA!

Is it dumb for the BI triathlon to be your triathlon ever?

I’ve done the bike route and I’ve ran on a beach before, but it was years ago and only two miles. I’ve also never done any kind of open water swimming and won’t be able to until the week before. I have no swim cap or anything like that and done plan on getting any. I also only have a mountain bike. I’m not trying to break any records, I’m just trying to finish and have fun.
