Procedural Question Parole Hearing Impact Statement for predator family member after ~20 years, any advice is appreciated.

Hello all, in a few months is my (M35) younger sisters (F22) fathers parole hearing. I’ve been asked by the court to give a next of kin impact statement at the hearing, along with other family and my sister.

She’s 22 now, let’s call her Cori, my sister. He is in prison for what he did to her for several years, I’ll go into no details but you can assume the nature of the crimes against her when she was six and younger. It's what you're thinking it might be. He's pedo, she is his daughter.

Initially this felt like a benign obligation, but over time it’s sunk in how important this is. Not only to keep him in prison, but as an event in my sisters life. This is the first time she will see him after almost 20 years. Not that she’s been missing him, but more like a dragon that she has to slay a few more times in her life. This is just the first battle.

I’m curious of the experiences of others, how has this gone for you? How hard did you try with your statements? Any advice for someone who has never done this before?

How can I keep my sister safe? She’s always been fragile, made worse by our mothers overt, overly protective (and quite mentally ill) behavior. Cori’s been hobbled and though she’s in her 20’s, she ‘feels’ like she’s a young teen, greener than green in all things. Never had a boyfriend, never had any kind of job, no school after high school.

A big part of the impact I’ve witnessed is this, it affected her education, and as such, her maturity. She’s got a panic disorder according to our mom, that was the reason that Cori did her last few years of school via packets at home. Basically, she’s been stunted socially, mentally and emotionally since he went to prison.

I am concerned with hurting her by saying what I would think is important to say. But I’m also trying to help her and our mom to write their statements in the lead up. Neither of them are particularly well educated, so I’m there to help them speak their minds as clearly as possible to give the best impression to the parole board.

I just want to help my sister and keep this POS off the streets for as long as I can.

If anyone has any advice at all, please, a concerned older brother would very much appreciate some outside perspectives.

I posted this in some other more therapy minded subs and I didn't get many answers, but I was pointed here as you all may have first hand advice on keeping him in Prison and do's and don'ts of this process.

Please, if you have any thoughts, I’d love to hear them. Even slightly off topic or anecdotal thoughts are welcome.

Thank you.

Procedural Question Parole

A good friend of mine, who I grew up with ended up killing someone over a decade ago. He was given 15 years for manslaughter and was paroled in February of 2026. He was recently put back in prison until the expiration of his sentence in January 2028 for a parole violation.

My question is how tough is parole and is it even worth doing?

News Grievances in Federal Prison Rarely Succeed. Here’s How Prisoners Would Change That.

For people who have a complaint about federal prison conditions, obtaining relief is nearly impossible, a new investigation by The Marshall Project and NPR found.

With the help of the Jailhouse Lawyer Initiative, a network of incarcerated legal experts, we surveyed incarcerated people, attorneys and advocates about how they would fix the remedy process. They also shared tips on how to navigate the system as it currently exists.

I am wondering what non fiction books made the biggest impact on prisoners. Besides religious or biblical or religious.

News The Prison Rules You Won’t Find in Any Handbook

Every prison and jail has a handbook full of official rules: how to buy food at commissary, how to send and receive mail, what counts as a violation. But the rules that matter most — the “unofficial” ones that govern how well you fit in and how quickly you can get settled — aren’t written anywhere. Most people learn them the hard way.

Missteps in prison can carry real consequences. Here’s what incarcerated people wish they had known when they first arrived.

Survey What would happen if every prisoner had their own tablet with unlimited access to streaming services?

I was having this discussion with a colleague today about how he tries to limit his kid’s screen time, but sometimes it’s too tempting to just hand them an iPad so they’ll be quiet for ten minutes while he gets something done.

I know some prisons allow inmates to have tablets and they can rent movies for exorbitant fees, but what if they just gave one to everyone with unlimited access to content (but without any ability to communicate with anyone on the outside)?

People could watch online seminars, research topics, or just play Candy Crush. Hell, let them watch porn all day, it’s not hurting anyone. It seems like a lot of problems in prison are the result of people being bored, and this would be a relatively cheap and easy way to keep people occupied.

I’m sure there are aspects of this I’m not considering, so I’m curious what this community’s thoughts are.

Anybody else have a culture shock coming back from prison. I haven’t even been away that long and feel like it would’ve been easier to finish up my time in prison than be on home confinement

Self Post How did your lawyer fall short?

I am a law student with a good bit of experience in criminal defense and I’m hoping to become a criminal defense attorney (particularly a public defender) once I pass the bar.

I’d be interested in hearing about people’s experience with their defense attorney, especially on the public defender side.

What did your lawyer do well? How did they fall short or mess up in your opinion? Is there anything simple that your lawyer could’ve done to make the process better overall?

A freshman’s dorm mattress at Mississippi State University. A Georgia Medicaid patient’s eyeglasses. The goalpost padding at Bauxite High School in Arkansas. The burn ban flag at the Boerne Fire Department in Texas Hill Country.

This project by photographer Daniella Zalcman shows the casual prevalence of goods made by prison labor in public and private spaces nationwide.

Procedural Question Mail Delivery

For those on the outside or even inside.. I have an inmate pen-pal that sent me a letter on Monday, June 15th, 2026, that's when the letter left their hands, but it's now July 4th and I still have no letter.

The mailroom at the prison, which is in Oregon, says postal mail moves very slowly, but almost 3-4 weeks, sounds outrageous. I will say, I live out of state in WI, so I don't know how much of a difference or factor that is for why the mail is slow.

I was just seeing if anyone has any feedback on this situation with mail coming or going to a prison.

Procedural Question Workout and Hygiene

There are these anecdotes and also videos about inmates doing huge volumes of burpees and push ups in their cells. How does hygiene work in this case? These style of workouts would make someone very sweaty and the smell in that small space would be unbearable. There are no showers in the cell. What do people do? What happens if your cellmate doesn't workout?

Survey For those who have been to prison in the last few years - did you notice any smartphone withdrawal?

Serious post not trying to be disrespectful, I'm trying to break my smart phone addiction and I'm wondering how people who have gone to prison who had high screen time found going without the internet/phone.

I understand this is probably a minor concern when going to prison but for some its probably the first time in the last few years they've been without their phone.
