Meta Breaks, moderation, sobriety...what "this sub is about."

Hey everybody.

Since the New Year and a welcome influx of new members, there has been an uptick in confidently wrong pronouncements of "what this sub is about."

As the lead mod, being confidently wrong is something I reserve only for myself, so I would like to make it clear how we go about choosing content that is inside or outside the rules.

To begin with, I took over the lead mod position four years ago, and I have made exactly one change to the moderation policies in that time, which is to remove posts discussing moderation from people who indicate they are minors. We remove those posts and have a respectful discussion with them about quitting until they are older. If they aren't open to that then we let them participate here as harm reduction, but we owe it to them to talk them through stopping at a young age first.

Again, that's the only change.

Outside of that, I have worked very hard to maintain continuity with the moderation policies that were established from the day of the sub's founding.

Our mission is, to state it as clearly as I can, to help people who are taking a break, figuring out the best way to moderate, or trying to figure out what a healthy relationship with weed looks like for them.

We are not leaves and we are not trees, and we should leave the discussions of quitting for good or smoking without issue completely to them.

But I will say, because this is where most people get it wrong, that contemplating stopping for good, and wanting to talk about it, is part of trying to find a better relationship with smoking.

If you want to smoke and are having problems, and are trying to figure out whether to find a better way or quit completely, then that discussion is fine here. If you then decide to quit for good then we refer you to Leaves.

Relevant to that, there should be absolutely zero "take this to Leaves" or "wtf I'm here because I didn't want to hear this shit" or any variation of those rude BS comments.

If you see something that you don't think should be on the group (like "I'm quitting for good, what's the best way to...") then report it and don't comment. Being rude to other people or trying to be a Petioles mall cop is out of line.

I know people just love when moderators post about the rules, so I suspect I will be greeted as a hero, but if you have any questions I'm happy to answer them if I can, but I am going to filter them before they go up because I'm not an idiot. :-)

Love you all, and I'm happy to have the oppotunity to do my part to help keep this place running.

Discussion I’ve never known what my medication is like without weed. That needs to change.

My ex and I bonded deeply over weed. I’ve had my medical card for six years and it helped me so much with my mental health. In the aftermath of our breakup, we both realized the negative impact weed played in our relationship; it created a lot of stagnation due to poor self discipline and avoidance of the problems in our relationship.

I was always selective with my strains, the purpose, and the form. I always saw it as beneficial, until it wasn’t. It’s gotten to the point where even sativa strains aren’t giving me any boost, energy, or uplifting high. It’s all just… fog.

I took a step back and realized I have been smoking weed since I first got diagnosed with ADHD and put on meds. I don’t even know what Wellbutrin feels like without weed.

I have severe CPTSD and anxiety, and I felt like weed helped for a while, but it’s quickly become a habitual problem. My usual routine includes smoking as soon as I log off work (I work from home) and before bed. But sometimes it bleeds into all hours if I’m bored or unable to focus on a task I want to get done (yay executive dysfunction). I don’t want to feel foggy when I wake up. Or have this jittery urge to smoke when I’m understimulated or I can’t decide what to do with myself. Or jump straight to my bong after work. It’s affecting my focus, my drive, and my daily ability to be productive.

The thing is… I have community. I have a social life. I have routines and things to pour myself into… but I can’t always stick to that, and weed becomes my comfort. It’s just easier to smoke and cope, enable myself almost. I realize my medication would probably make all of those actions easier, but the weed is masking the motivation.

I am deeply anxious about nightmares given my CPTSD. How difficult is sleeping without it? I plan to only take a puff of a vape or an edible before bed, not my bong or joint. It’s so easy for me to binge smoke on those. Weekends are for smoking, but only after I get certain things done and do other things to feel refreshed, confident, and healthy.

I want to try to restructure my relationship with weed, something to enjoy as a treat and pastime, versus a reliance. I worry I’ll struggle at first when I am experiencing executive dysfunction, as I’ve previously turned to weed to get me going, but it doesn’t always help. Perhaps switching to edibles or vapes during these moments could help.

Thanks for reading — if anyone has any tips, let me know ☺️

Discussion Sober…but at what cost?

Hey guys 👋🏻

Currently on day 8 of a t break…but tapered slowly for about a month so only had 1 semi bad night of sleep and have no issues with sleep or appetite because I planned it out and eased my way into sobriety.

My issue is that I can’t work out or do anything productive or healthy with my day. Although I’m not having these types of physical withdrawal symptoms, it’s like I don’t have a single crumb of dopamine and my energy has completely tanked. My screen time has skyrocketed, I’m bed rotting, haven’t worked out when I’ve been consistently doing it 4x a week before this, diet has gone to shit, don’t want to do anything and it’s got me in a feedback loop now.

This brings me to the question: Yeah, I’m sober rn, but at what cost? Life doesn’t feel worth it (not in a suicidal way). When I’ve done longer breaks the motivation just never ever came back and never improved. I’m talking after months, even though I’m not a heavy user when I’m smoking (although I’m consistent and do it everyday, it’s not all day) I maybe take one to two hits a day max but usually just one small one. I don’t get it.

I’m in trauma therapy and probably have undiagnosed ADHD as my sister, mother, and all of my cousins from that side have it, so maybe these two things are playing into this.

Wondering if anybody has come to the conclusion that if cannabis is making you wanna live and be here and do healthy things then that should be enough? It’s like I can’t take care of myself without it, even at very low doses.

For years I’d only smoke maybe 2 weeks every few months but as I get older it’s like everything has gotten worse and I just feel insanely burnt out and this is the only thing that makes it better to some degree. I also have chronic health issues and picked the cannabis up more regularly since December to help with some acute issues that cropped up.

Last year before that I was doing it 2 weeks on and 2-3 weeks off but took a 2 month break last summer and nothing improved at all during that break and I couldn’t take care of myself or do healthy things without it. So it didn’t feel worth it to take such a long break.

The reason I wanted to take a break is because I have a break from work right now so without the external demand to perform, I wanted to take a break. Also because I’m prone to dissociation and sometimes the weed exacerbates it if I’m using regularly for too long.

Any insight or similar experiences would be appreciated! Thank you for reading! 🙏🏻

Discussion Day 1

I’ve been smoking pretty much all day every day for the past few months. My tolerance is shit rn so I decided to take a little break. My job is super monotonous and annoying for about an other month so I’ve been smoking my vape while at work to keep my mind at ease.

Let’s just say I’m missing that today and I’m in a mood. The “are you okay” questions have begun because I’m keeping to myself and can’t hide my emotions from my face.

Anyone else deal with this shit?

Discussion Advice please

looking for advice. my H has always dabbled in smoking weed very seldom for as long as I know him. I mean maybe 3-4 times a year, tops. in Jan he started vaping other drugs-thc. he is now a shell of the man I married. he stopped drinking 20 yrs ago because he couldn’t handle it, went to AA etc and hasn’t touched it since. now I fear he has a secondary issue. he walks around like a zombie some days, has started to lock himself into the shed while working, asked me for a separation, has been lying to get out of childcare saying he has to work, is very irritable, angry at me, will not make eye contact with me or communicate with me, is totally emotionally shit down, has told me he “feels emotionless” and has zero empathy. oh and he randomly has started to park his car on the street rather than our drive way.. it’s like he is paranoid or something.. I know nothing about this or the likes and would like any input on if this could be down to the stuff or maybe it’s a mid life crisis

Discussion Doing really well this break!

I’m on my first t-break in several years after vaping flower daily in the PM. Work is very difficult right now and I felt like I needed a break so I can show up as my best self on stressful days and also explore new job options. On previous breaks I’ve been so nauseous I couldn’t eat and incredibly irritable. I’m noticing this time I’m just slightly nauseous with a headache and being more cognizant of my negative emotions and dealing with them better. It’s day 5 and I’m already more productive and my anxiety is better. I noticed when using that during the morning or the day if I got anxious about something that feeling lingered or even built up. Now I get anxious for a short time, like a minute or two, then am able to rationalize that feeling away by planning to address whatever is causing my anxiety. My memory is better too! The only thing that hasn’t improved over my last t break are the night sweats. I wake up literally dripping sweat and have the craziest dreams.

Could be worse though. I hope everyone else is having a good day and a tolerable break!

Discussion Day -62

I've struggled with weed for years, and this is not my first post in this sub reddit. The past few weeks I've tried to quit, go on a t-break, and allowed myself to use as much as I want.

Last night while I was smoking on the porch, I was reflecting on how I do love weed. I enjoy it and I like when its fun. But for me, being high everyday is not fun. I feel slower, lazier, more anxious and I've learned that I use it to suppress my difficult emotions. And I'm stuck in a cycle of use, shame, bingeing and quitting.

The other BIG thing that I realized last night was I don't want to smoke this winter. There is nothing really enjoyable to me about having to go outside to smoke a joint in the cold and then come inside stiff from the chill and smelling like weed. Smoking in the summer with the sun out? Peak. Winter time? Mid af. I'd much rather spend this winter cozy inside, working on hobbies and resting.

Normally when I quit I do it on short notice because I am overcome with feelings of shame and regret. But this time I know what my goal is: Stop all cannabinoid use when the season changes. I am not bingeing and stopping all at once. I'm tapering down slowly. I'm buying my last half ounce this Saturday and I am getting high cbd low thc flower. I'll get one last fun edible and two more cbd/cbc/cbg gummies.

The last time few times I stopped smoking I've used other cannabinoids in edible/tincture form to help me manage the withdrawal symptoms. It seems to help with the physical stuff but not with the emotions that came up, which is fine I guess because I need to feel that stuff anyways.

I want to smoke through the weed enjoying it and the summer weather while keeping up with my other cannabinoids and then once I'm done with the flower (hopefully around or by September 1st), start tapering my gummies down so that I am completely off all cannabis by September 20th.

I want to be completly sober from weed for 6 months and then after that, very infrequently. Once a month or less. Weed hits so much better after a long break. Its euphoric and eye opening and so good for releasing/movement. But when I smoke it the way I do, I just fall into addictive tendencies :(

So here's to growing and maturing in my relationship with weed!

Discussion Did getting off carts increase your motivation? Or did you have to stop completely?

No motivation to do life. But I don’t want to give thc up either. I just ran out of my carts but have plenty of edibles and just going to use those to keep me comfortable and reduce my intake. Has anyone else had success with this? Stopping carts, using another source, and then started feeling like participating in life again? Or did you have to give it up completely to regain motivation in life?

Discussion 6 months off and now a few weeks into moderation with strong cravings

Daily smoker as a teenager then around 5 years sober, followed by 10-15 years of mostly daily smoking aside from a few short breaks here and there.

At the start of the year I decided to quit for six months (6 having completed a 3 month break the year before which almost immediately returned to daily), during the six months I noticed a lot of improvements in my mental health, work life and in my home life, more able to pursue hobbies, interests and new friendships.

It was never my intention to quit forever I just don't want to be a daily smoker - I hate the brain fog and how dull life is when weed meets all of your needs instead of being bored enough to get up, get out and try new things.

My new rule is that I can smoke but never more than two days in a row, and always with at least 21 days between smoking sessions.

I finished the six months and smoked my two days - it turned into three.. but now the weed has been locked away for just over two weeks - I'm busy this coming weekend so by the time I smoke next weekend, it will have been 4 weeks since my last smoke. I'll allow 2 days smoking and then lock it up for at least 21 days again..

Anyway - im getting massive cravings.

Absolutely 10000% I will not smoke tonight, I know I won't, I have work tomorrow and ppemty to keep me occupied but the cravings are still coming in waves negotiating with myself to break the lockbox and smoke.. I know I won't but it wont stop..

ig just looking for some wisdom from others..

I'm hoping that in time of I keep to my 21 day rule the cravings between will start to fade otherwise I'll have to consider a permanent quit which I don't want to do.

Also, when I did smoke after 6 months it was a bit underwhelming.

Day 5 no weed. Im on vacation in a country where its illegal, so that i surely cant get any. Ate a beautifull meal tonight, felt fine at first. Just needed to tell someone. I feel so alone fuck this shit

Edit: Thank you guys for the kind words 🫶 i feel much better knowing im not alone with experiencing this!

But every time I try moderation I get pulled back into hourly usage.

I have diabetes and last night I ate an entire thing of mini donuts after hitting a weed pen a million times

I’m literally killing myself

Discussion Quit week 7 years ago and thinking of coming back to it

I quit seven years ago after developing a daily cart habit. I would get through about one 0.5 ml cart a week. I only used it towards the end of the day, but I became unable to sleep without it.

Eventually, I quit and had pretty bad withdrawal symptoms for a month or so, which honestly terrified me and put me off using again. By that point, I genuinely felt like I didn’t enjoy it anymore-it was just a compulsion. I’d also had issues with alcohol, MDMA, and other substances in the past.

Anyway, over the past seven years, I’ve really sorted my life out and am now in a good place. I stayed sober and avoided all substances during that time. I tried alcohol again a few months ago, and now I’ll sometimes drink socially or after a rough day—maybe once or twice a month. I’ve tried kava too, but again, I only use it once or twice every few months.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about weed and the reflective insight it used to give me—almost like it helped me change my perspective and view things differently. At the same time, I don’t know whether this is just my old addict brain speaking. I wouldn’t smoke or vape it now; I’d probably use drops if I did try it again. But I’ve been thinking about weed a lot recently.

Generally, I’ve become addicted to many things in the past, including coffee, alcohol, and other substances. However, after quitting, I’ve sometimes been able to return to moderate, normal use. I also don’t enjoy being under the influence of something all day. Right now, I don’t want to be high all day-I just want to be lightly stoned every so often so I can reflect, appreciate myself, and think about things.

I don’t know. I thought I’d reach out here to see whether anyone relates or can warn me if this sounds like a bad idea.

Advice I’m on day 20 of a T break…trying to go for 30.

As the title says, I’m currently on a T break. The last time I used THC was a vape cart hit on the night of June 30th to say farewell a bit.

My tolerance got way out of control because I had been dealing with some pretty bad pain due to a Sciatica flare up, so I was burning through carts like crazy. It definitely got a bit expensive.

I’m at day 20 and have read that 21 days is a good tolerance reset period. I plan to just go back in gently with low dose edibles before bedtime. Sleep is my biggest issue right now.

Would it help me further to grind on and make it to the 30 day mark? I was taking down two 1G live resin or distillate vape carts per week easily when my pain was flaring up just to give you an idea of how hard I went.

I was hoping after 30 days I would be reset enough that a simple 5mg or 10mg indica edible before bedtime might do the trick. I used to mix in edibles with my vape carts and before my break it got to the point where it took 100mg gummies to even make me feel anything.

I appreciate any feedback! Thanks.

Discussion Stomach appetite issues and smoking

Hi there. I am a super active person when it comes to exercise but I smoke a lot. I have quit several times over the years but I always find my way back. Weed absolutely destroys my digestion and appetite. Has anyone had good success with stomach issues after quitting?

Discussion 100 days clean off carts/edibles

I wanted to at least commemorate it… I was truly hoping to feel better by this point but I’m miserable. Cravings are long gone and I’m truly grateful to have stopped, but some combination of PAWS, lack of healthy coping mechanisms, previously existing anxiety/depression I was self medicating is keeping me down. Here’s to hoping the next 100 days are easier I guess.

Discussion Weed genuinely helped me for a time. Now I wish to cut back.

I was pretty severely abused growing up for being autistic and it led to many mental and physical health issues like obsessive-compulsive disorder, masking, possible PTSD, and other developmental imperilments that left me rather depressed and dysthymic all throughout my life. Idk how I survived it all or even got through school, many wouldn't. College was insanely stressful for me and left me very burnt out because I would pour my energy in just trying to pass my classes since I was having trouble understanding the material like everyone else. It feels like I had some kind of brain damage from it all. That's when at the age of 21 I turned to cannabis and I absolutely fell in love with it. I became quite a daily and passionate user. It genuinely made me happy and motivated for a time. Some of the highest grades I got were in college because of it. I live in a legal state and only ever got stuff from the dispensary.

At the same time tho, it did heighten my obsessive-compulsive disorder to quite a severe degree. I would cope by going on walks and getting exercise to let my mind just play out and then return to my work. I felt very alone in what constantly went on in my head and was rather introverted. Not good for a modern fast-paced world where everyone wants you to network, do a fuck tonne of internships, and be the president of a club to even stand a chance of getting a job. I kept the usage up because at least this felt much, much better than how I did before.

But it never truly did drastically improve executive function or working memory like how I needed it. May have worsened those, actually, and I do remember times of just feeling very tired after using some strains. Yet still I persisted because I liked the feeling it gave me despite it being somewhat of a bad coping mechanism.

Now I wanna be more productive and responsible. I've been using almost daily for about 3 years now and eventually by some miracle all throughout that my OCD gradually went away, and now that I'm antidepressant free, actually have a job, and other important treatments like CPAP and psychedelic therapy, I feel my life beginning to pick up again and spot an opportunity for a tidal wave of potential growth. So to foster that I'm cutting way back on my usage further. Nothing during the weekdays, still limit on weekends. We'll see how this goes.

Discussion When do you use for weed for pain management?

I was curious about other people's approach to weed as a pain relief tool when they're using more moderately. While I was smoking weed for fun, I also used it as a way to relieve physical body pain since I can't take over the counter pain killers because of allergies. Do you have an internal checklist/rules for when you use it for pain?

Discussion This might be mental gymnastics, but my brain likes it.

I've been a bit uncertain about this break of mine. It was never intended to be a tolerance break, just a break to show myself the anxiety about not smoking is unfounded and to take agency back as opposed to smoking compulsively. It's only day ten.

Last night I thought I'd like to try smoking once to see how I do with it and see how it is to not smoke the following day.

But then, I went, well, I'm super tired, so now isn't a good time. And, tomorrow (now today), I have an obligation at the end of the day and it's Sunday, which means I have to get up and work tomorrow. So, it's not really a good time to smoke. And I don't really think I want to smoke on workdays, so that means it'll probably actually be the end of next week before I smoke.

Then! I realized I could still end my break! Now, I'm no longer abstaining because of an arbitrary break that I imposed on myself. My break is over, and I'm choosing not to smoke yet because it will interfere with how I want to feel for other things.

Again, it might be mental gymnastics, but there's something awesome about ending the break and recognizing it's now my choice to smoke or not. (Obviously it was my choice during the break too, but I didn't give myself permission to make any choices during the break; I was just taking a break.) Because the alternative is ending the break and immediately smoking, which has the feel of it only having been the break that made me not do it.

Make any sense?

Discussion Am on day 4 of weed break and have so much more energy

I vaped medicinal THC and CBD for the last about 6 months to help with pain and fatigue. Due to new medication I now had to stop vaping/ using weed at all. And today I woke up with so much more energy than I've felt for months. I cleaned a bit, took a shower and did some chores and I didn't feel like a weight was dragging me down, like it used to.

Now if course I have still fatigue and can only be active for about 3-5 minutes at a time, but the amount of things I did today 100% exceeded everything I was capable of the last months.

Plus my pain isn't significantly worse than with weed.

I guess that is my wake up call. Was hesitant the last months to stop weed, as I didn't really like how it felt. But didn't stop cause I feared my pain would get worse. But it didn't.

Now of course that's anecdotal and can change from day to day. But I think I'm over weed.

Discussion First T Break For Multiple Reasons

I am going on my first ever t break since I started smoking daily about 8 years ago.

I am mainly doing this so I can find a new job.

I find that I do find myself thinking about weed daily way too much and has become a part of my routine too much. If I am at home and not at work or with friends, I am constantly loading up my one hitter to use all day long. When im at work or even sometimes with friends, I will just be thinking about getting back home again to smoke.

I do think that this break will help me find a better relationship with weed, myself, and hopefully a new job down the road.

I am definitely nervous about the cravings, withdrawals, etc for the first few weeks as I have not done this before and quitting cold turkey feels scary.

I know I just need to find ways to fixate my mind on other things during this time and I do believe I can do it, it will just be very hard as I have always used weed as my coping mechanism.

I keep telling myself "Just one day at a time" as I am here on only day 1 of my break.

News Severe weed addiction

I’ve recently realized that my relationship with weed has gotten out of control, and I’m struggling to accept that this is actually something I’m dealing with.
I’ve been smoking almost every day and sometimes from the moment I wake up. My tolerance is so high that the high barely lasts anymore, but I still crave weed constantly. Today I’m at work after running out, and I genuinely can’t stop thinking about smoking. The craving has been incredibly intense and everything feels boring to me when I’m sober.
The frustrating thing is that logically I have so many reasons to stop. Weed is expensive where I live and I’m spending money I can’t afford to keep spending. It gives me intense munchies and affects my eating, and because my tolerance is so high I’m not even getting the same high anymore. Yet despite knowing all of this, I still desperately want to smoke.
I’ve taken breaks before and managed to go a few weeks without it, but when I start smoking again, I quickly fall back into frequent or daily use.
I also feel conflicted because I genuinely love weed and love being high. I don’t necessarily want to say I’ll never smoke again for the rest of my life. I just don’t want weed to control me like this. I want to be able to enjoy my life sober and not wake up thinking about smoking or spend my day craving it.
Has anyone else been in this position where you genuinely loved weed but realized you couldn’t control your relationship with it? Did the intense cravings and feeling that everything is boring sober eventually get better? And has anyone successfully gone from compulsive/daily use to having a healthier relationship with cannabis, or did you eventually find that abstinence was the only thing that worked for you?

Discussion Do NOT underestimate the role of coffee in your cravings

Hello community

People often ignore this because weed lethargic effect really drives you to combine with stimulants like coffee. To my experience there is a deep connection.

I’ve noticed that whenever I consume cannabis and coffee not long enough apart from each other, there is always cravings and my cannabis effect last much less. Interestingly the quality of cannabis effects worsen and make it much less effective.

I put myself into some serious periods of A/B testings and documented a lot of it. Although the ultimate goal for everyone is different but I noticed a lot of us struggle with cravings. I encourage you to look deeper into this connection if you haven't already.

I used to drink 5 cups of coffee while trying to reduce my weed consumption and I failed numerous times. Currently I sip one cup of coffee slowly from 7 AM to 8 AM (I dont drink fast to avoid any sort of sudden stimulation). Followed by a lot of water throughout the day to avoid cravings. At night 2 to 3 hits are more than enough for the relaxation and sedation I need from weed. I kept this routine in the past 3 months and it worked so far.

Advice Tolerance break tips

I am 18 and have been smoking since I was 14, consistently since 16 and I am ready to take a break. It is at the point where I barely even feel high anymore. Every time I don’t have weed I am unable to sleep and eat properly but I plan on committing to a break for atleast a few weeks. What are some tips for getting through the break and allowing my body to adjust to normal sobriety. (How do I sleep and eat) and what can I do to stay motivated?
