  • June 26, 2026 (courtesy u/jimbozak): A 12-year-old visitor was injured by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on June 26, according to park officials. The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m near Mud Volcano, just north of Fishing Bridge. A press release did not disclose the extent of the injuries, but said that the child was transported to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel. The incident remains under investigation.

  • July 11, 2026 (courtesy u/raynear): A man was seriously injured Friday evening after being thrown 8 feet into the air by an angry bull bison in Yellowstone National Park. Mike MacLeod, a professional photographer from Bozeman, Montana, said the incident happened at the Bridge Bay Campground, south of Fishing Bridge. MacLeod said the man was walking with his grandson when the agitated bison made them the targets of its aggression...The National Park Service has not released any information on the incident. There is a video of this incident. Ignore the terrible music in the YT link. I suggest muting it. u/raynear's post. An updated article says the 65-year-old "broke his femur in four places, saying [he] believes the animal spared his life by choosing not to gore him. The entire incident, he said, “was not as catastrophic as it could have been”."

Current Score (as of July 12, 2026):

Fluffy Cows - 2

Tourists - 0

SO YOU WANT TO MOVE TO MONTANA? [Post your questions here]

Post your "Moving to Montana" (MtM) questions here.

A few guidelines to spurring productive conversations about MtM:

  1. Be Specific: Asking "what towns in Montana have good after-school daycare programs?" will get you a lot farther than "what town should I move to?"
  2. Do your homework: If a question can be answered with a google search ... do the google search. Heck, try searching previous threads here.
  3. Be sensitive to Montanans' concerns: Seriously, don't boast about how much cheaper land is here. It isn't cheap to people earning Montana wages. That kind of thing.
  4. Seriously, don't ask us what town to move to: Unless you're asking something specific and local-knowledge-based like, "I have job offers in Ryegate and Forsyth, which one has the most active interpretive dance theater scene"?
  5. Leave the politics out of it: If you're moving here to get away from something, you're just bringing that baggage along with you. You don't know Montana politics yet, and Reddit doesn't accurately reflect Montana politics anyway; so just leave that part out of it. No, we don't care that Gavin Abbot was going to take away your abortion gun. Leave those issues behind when asking Montanans questions. See r/Montana Rule #1 and hop on over to our sister subreddit, r/MontanaPolitics, for all of your Treasure State politics needs!
  6. If you insist on asking us where to move: you are hereby legally obliged to move to whatever town gets the most upvotes. Enjoy Scobey.
  7. If you are looking for broader help on traveling and tourism topics: please visit r/MontanaTravel. I hear it's nice this time of year...

-------------------------------------------

to r/Montana regulars: if they're here rather than out there on the page, they're abiding by our rules. Let's rein in the abuse and give them some legitimate feedback. None of the ol' "Montana's Full" in here, OK?

This thread will be refreshed monthly.

Youtube video of Article (KTVQ)

GREYCLIFF — What began as a quiet summer camping trip along the Yellowstone River ended with a 14-year-old ranch kid using his rodeo skills to save a man from drowning.

"We all heard, 'Help, help,'" Thomas said. "There's two or three people floating down the river, one hanging on to the cooler, and he wasn't saying anything."

That day, Jory had brought his lariat, a tool he had spent the year learning to use on the ranch where he grew up.

Like a scene out of a Western movie, Jory took his 12-foot lariat in hand and threw his loop toward the drowning man.

“First instinct I thought was try and rope him and drag him out before he gets too far down the river,” he said. “Luckily, I caught him first try.”

"He comes up, and he said, 'I think I just saved a life,'" added Sandy. "And we all said, 'Yeah, you did.'”

Can we have a clear definition of what is considered politics in r/Montana

A serious question here: I read the mods statement about non political posts but it's unclear to me at least what political means.

If the post affects all Montana citizens, for instance "Taxes" that every single citizen pays whether they vote or not, is that a political post?

If a public representative harms someone and it's in the news, is reporting that political? If the post was about a non public serving citizen that did the same thing, would that be considered political?

I think it would help the community for the mods to make a statement and help delineate what they want posted in this public forum they volunteer to moderate.z

As there is no appeal process and no way to escalate anything it would be nice to have more guidance rather than a link to a dead forum that was specially built to handle the conversations people want to have in this forum.

Hopefully you don't consider this political post, just a genuine question.

A Walk in the Woods

I went for a walk in the woods yesterday. I couldn’t help myself and stopped at the reservoir for a reflection photo, then parked at a nearby trailhead and began to wander up the trail. The ground was saturated from an overnight rainstorm. As the Sun began to bring its warm light, the water vapor condensed in the relatively cool 50º air. This resulted in wisps of fog rising from wherever the light contacted the Earth. I took video (included in the comments) at one location where it appeared as if some wayward concert fog machine had been left in the forest! There were so many unique, but not necessary photogenic fungi to be found here. I found a few compelling species and made a few images of them. My last photo of the day was a Twin Flower. They grow from ground level vines covered in pairs of leaves. A single stem reaches up every so often from which sprouts a pair of tiny pink and white bell shaped flowers. Such a peaceful morning in a beautiful place.

Where is the best place to buy cherries around Polson?

I would like to buy some fresh, local cherries. Organic, ideally. Grocery store, farm stand, doesn’t matter. I’m near Polson.
