Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

This is probably my most successful attempt to NMM up o date. And I'm quite surprised how easy it is to make leather textures with a makeup sponge and some glazing, it turned good enough unexpectedly fast.

I painted an ork again.

pretty happy with him. the NMM was just a test to try and get a good scuffed metal look (and then i made the arm a bit cleaner so it stood out more). its a bit brighter than id like but its a first of many where i am trying to improve. however im very happy with the copper NMM on the bolts and barrel.

the base was absurdly simple because i wanted to try getting the scorched earth look where shrapnel has burned the ground. worked well... but the ork covers the effect so its not the most prominent here.

looking forward to messing around with the rest of the beast boys box and then working on the armageddon bunch.

C&C Wanted Looking for some constructive criticism

Hello! I'm a beginner to mini painting, this is one of my early attempts at painting some iron warriors. So far I'm fairly happy with the result but would really appreciate any pointers on how to improve.

I think the agrax wash I used on the brass parts didn't come out so good, so would love any tips on how to improve that next time in particular.

Thanks!

C&C Wanted Attempting to deepen the red on horus’s cape - thoughts? Too bright?

I deepened the shadows and took the highlights from Mephiston red to evil sunz scarlet. Curious what people think - I’m almost wondering if it’s not looking rich red enough anymore? It’s a tricky balance - I don’t want it to turn orange…

This is my third attempt at painting a chrome space marine and each time I'm happier with the result! I made a simple backdrop and included a specular highlight this time, which I think really boosts the look.

I just started working on my first piece that includes a bit of fur. I am not a hundred percent convinced by the look so far so I would appretiate a bit of critique.

Help Needed/New Painter Working on my first bust as well as my first nmm attempt. Looking for some pointers

Post image

I started painting about 6 months ago and wanted to try out a bust as it looked fun. Figured this one was a good chance to finally try out some NMM too. I tried taking a pic of it primed to figure out the lighting, but I know my lighting is definitely inconsistent. I just have to finish the hair, crown, hands and some small details, but I’m looking for some tips on fixing things I’ve done and how to finish it up. I’m happy with how the face and eyes came out but I feel like maybe some depth or something is missing? Overall I’m really happy with how it’s looking for my first attempt at these things but I definitely can see a lot of things that could be improved.

C&C Wanted Does this read as a “molten blade”

Post image

I am painting a rogue assassin from RumandResin printing and I’m trying to get away from just a very dark/all black mini. I thought having some sort of molten blade could cast OSL on the hood etc to enhance the mini but before I take that step I just want some constructive criticism on whether the blade looks “molten” should I push the yellow higher into almost white? Happy to take any and all advice!
