Nostalgia First CD you ever bought?
I played Green Day’s Dookie endlessly as a kid. Still holds up to this day in my humble opinion.

I had the single of Peaches on cassette, the actual cassette was translucent orange. Man the world was so cool then.

does 'spending' my own penny on a Columbia House order and basically forcing my parents to follow through with buying another dozen (or so?) CDs at full price count as using my own money?
5
u/Skelligean 1h ago
I tried so hard buying another CD after Hybrid Theory, and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter.

I bought this at blockbuster for like $18 in 1997 money. All their CDs and movies were overpriced. 2-3 years later I remember buying the MM LP on the day it came out for $11 at Best Buy. Fuck blockbuster. They got what was coming to them.

u/Due-Sheepherder-218 3h ago

Out of all the great albums that came out of the 90s, this one may stand out on top of them all.
Absolute classic.

Just re-listened to this album. I think it might be a “perfect album” where every song is an absolute banger.

u/wesbug 1h ago
FUCK. Any time anyone mentions secret song it's stuck in my head for like a week.
Dookie was also my first. Think I had the cd and then got the cassette. Second was tragic kingdom.

u/throw42069away420 1h ago
Dammit. Now it’s in my head! 🤣
Melancholy & The Infinite Sadness was another one I had on repeat. Saved up and bought a 5 disc CD changer around that time so I could keep them all going in my room.

Haha I just commented I couldn’t remember if Smash was my first. Went to the 20th anniversary tour. Pennywise, Bad Religion and The Offspring was one hell of a show.

Back in 2024 I saw Green Day in Atlanta and they played all of Dookie from start to finish - including the hidden track 🙃
Best concert of my life. Sang every single song!

Counting Crows August and Everything After was my first CD, won it at a science fair in 10th or 11th grade? I wanted the certificate for paintball, but my mother absolutely forbid it. First purchased? Probably from Columbia house because I lived about an hour from any music store in the middle of nowhere.

The first CD I bought on my own in a store was Savage Garden’s first album. Fall of 1997 on a trip to the mall with the girls shortly after breaking up with my first boyfriend.
That whole CD is 90’s high school nostalgia. It was even a burnt orange color!
Baggy corduroys were popular along with brown lipstick, and lace up boots.
Also popular were layered rayon gauze skirts we called “hippie skirts.” I paired my olive green hippy skirt with velour sweaters and oversized fleece button downs.
God, I miss the cozy warmth of a fall spent with friends going to school and worrying over boys.

Erasure - I say I say I say. I used to love 'Always', and got a CD player and the CD on my birthday. Didn't speak a word English back then, but started to memorize the lyrics with the booklet (those good old booklets!). When we finally had English classes at school, my English was above anyone else's, and I am pretty sure it was thanks to me listening to English music and learning the lyrics by heart.

I got Smash Mouth's Astro Lounge for Christmas I think in 2000 when I was 9. First CD I went to the store with the intention of getting was Gorillaz' self-titled album summer 2001 because I was obsessed with their music videos when I was 10 (and still love them!)
